I'm looking for rubbers that a young kid could start with. They need to have the following characteristics:

  • Under $20 (US)
  • 1.4 - 1.8 mm sponge
  • Non-tacky
  • Emphasis on control
Thanks!

Why you need so thin sponge? Even for kid to start don’t need thin sponge like this. 2.0 is fine

My goal was to reduce weight and reactivity. My daughter is almost 4yo. She's tall and thin for her age. I'd like to start playing with her on a small table soon.

Stiga Innova Ultralight: https://www.spinfactory.de/rubbers/innova-ultralight.html?___store=en. Maybe some Spinlord rubbers would fit. Visit tabletennis11.com or https://ttdd.eu/belage/noppen-innen/spinlord.html for more information.

Get BTY premade Flextra, it would be light enough and has good characteristics to learn actual techniques.
There is no real "pro", "prov" or "NT" H3 in the market.

Any rubber in 1.8 or 2.0 really. My son started playing with one of Cole's premade busters (xp2008 with some dawei all wood blade)... over time upgraded to soft modern sponges (tenergy fx type) and also moved to a normal shaped blade as dawei was a bit odd. This was to make used rubbers fit better.

Nowadays he plays with whatever is on sale  Smile(xiom vega, victas limber, tibhar elp) and weight has never been an issue (his blade is appox 82-83g) so don't worry too much about it.. just get a thin soft tensor that's on sale.

Focus snipe 3 would be good. Cheap, light, responsive soft rubber. Not fast. And good cheap honest rubber that would be adequate for children up to 10 (not obviously talking about children like Mima Ito and Harimoto)

729 Super FX  You can control how much tackiness to have by either washing the rubber or not washing it.

RE: tackiness
Spin and control are two features young player need to learn from the beginning. Tacky rubber is not wrong choice, but again, it's not fixed you can have it as slightly tacky or not tacky at all.

RE: weight
This rubber comes with blue porous sponge, it is light.

RE: control
There are lots of combinations you can do mixing hardness between 42 - 46 and thickness 1.5 - 2.2mm. 1.8mm H42 or H44 is good choice.

Dawei XP2008 Super Power from www.colestt.com hands down every day of the week. $8 USD a sheet. Medium firm sponge, not so tacky topsheet. Medium speed, medium spin, high control.

If the sponge is too firm, soften it up with a couple coats of baby oil for a few days.

I used that rubber for years on my BH, I value a control rubber, so I can impact hard and still land it.

You team up XP2008 with a wood blade like 896... you are under $40 a bat delivered.

If you wanna go extra cheepo mode, go to Walmart or Kmart or similar place... get the cheapest $4 hardbat OX SP. Those OX SP sheets peel off real easy, use sandpaper and make blade smooth. Blade isn't gunna be a pro level blade, but it will still be an allround blade, just the right class for a learning player.

Toss on your XP 2008 rubbers and bang - you got an all new bat complete for $20 USD.

But really, no need to go that cheepo unless you are building a ton of bats for a couple dozen kids.

You might be able to make a project out of that and get a club to stockpile some used rubbers for you to cut down the expense, but a new bat serviceable and appropriate for a new learner at under $40 USD delivered is under the price of one sheet of modern rubber... that is ridiculously good inexpensive already.

This is horrible advise. $4 is a piece of crap not made for playing, and certainly not good for learning such a fine and complex game as TT.

Obviously there is no need to go for pro equipment, but good quality 3 ply wood is fine. Kid can be taught about taking care of blade, at least not dropping blade on the floor and using it only for TT.

The surface, core and handle need to be made from good wood, straight, flat, no cracks and etc. Most of pre-made rackets are made of leftover materials, they look good to sell but are so crap and not playable.

Look at blades from 729, Palio or DHS, there are lots of choices still on the budged. All of that is available for $40 or less.

I might be wrong but it appears that OP is looking for setup advise rather then for the ways to go as cheap as possible (that would be really silly)

Palio AK47 blue or yellow would be your best bet for training a kid. Pretty cheap and very forgiving on an all wood blade , offers ample dwell time on loops. I’ve had one of my colleagues kid play with that setup and he is pretty happy with it.

Not sure what to recommend for a starter blade. Perhaps try to find a used one from a club member. Medium speed and light.

But if you want cheap and controllable rubbers these are very good options:

Stiga JMS EVO 1

Go ahead check the price (this is an excellent rubber for the price!!)

and Frienship 729 FX.....$12 + shipping

One caveat is that the Friendship 729 will not last very long. But then again, how much usage is your 4 year old gonna impart on the rubber really....just make sure the rubber is kept clean and the racket kept in a case. That will make the rubbers playing properties last longer.

I have a 4 year old son and we went to a club a couple of times, but since he does not live with me, we can go there as often as I wanted. Nevertheless I'd like to play with him as much as possible. So if you have time, write a couple of lines how your 4yo daughter is progressing and if you have any advice Thumbs Up

My son "plays" LOL with my old old racket with some old srivers which I managed to find at the bottom of my old sports stuff box. But if you need to buy rubbers, I'd say Palio AK47 blue would be great. Soft sponge, lightweight and some 12 USD from Aliexpress...

Just get some 729 802 or similar short pips with 1.5mm sponge. They are fine for starting with if the initial expectation is just to hit, and the weight is right for a 4-year-old. Paired with a slightly undersized blade in the low 70 gram range, you can get to ~140 grams easily.

Yinhe and Palio both have blades made specifically for kids with less than 70g weight.
Pair with palio AK47 or some ktl rubber, yiu will get light weight setup that'sstill very good for beginner, maybe even intermediate.

If you're in need of light non tacky cheap rubber get AK-47 blue or 729 super soft. Both are under 10 and light (on Ali anyway)
For blade just get any old throwaway and take rubbers off, light sanding and away you go!
I did this and ended up with a perfect bat for a 4yo the blade was 71g and rubbers together about 160-170g
Mark v is amazing for a beginner bit really SPENNY.

I bought my then-10 year old, from Tabletennisonly, Focus III Snipe on T11+,
144g in total. Maybe too bouncy, though. I could not convince him to switch to a slower blade later.
Right hand: Stiga Allround NCT (74g) /Rasant Grip max/Talon OX red (total 135g)
Left hand, 2020-1: Stiga Allround WRB (67g)/Fastarc G-1 1.8mm/V11 > Extra max 158g
