Yes, hefty guys prefer anti over LP rubbers. And the infirm boys do like LP better. |

Ah yes; the halcyon days of deception in the sport. John Hilton is the only player to win the European Championships as an unseeded player (though it is claimed that the windy drafts in the arena seem to have contributed). It was the John Hiltons and Carl Preans of the table tennis world that promoted the two color rule, their lasting legacy. I also recall that never has one experienced a more entertaining warm up than that provided by Peter Stellwag and Jochen Leiss; amazing skills on display. Thanks,

Donn, I don't think that Carl Prean was part of the reason that the 2-color rule was implemented in 1986. Prean was born in 1967, so he was still a junior previous to the rule implementation and hadn't yet made a big impact on the international scene, though he did win the English senior national championship at the age of 15. Hilton was generally believed to be the reason the rule was changed as he won the European Championship in 1980 as a huge underdog. He was born in 1947 so he was from a different generation than Prean. Edit: ITTF required two color already in 1983!

One would say Eric Boggan and Danny Seemiller were large contributors to the rule change.

Do you know what rubbers Hilton was using? Long pips and smooth?

No long pips. Anti-spin and inverted, with lots of twiddling.

Cai Zhenhua would be my first pick for the two color rule. Shakehands, anti and inverted, his serve was unreadable, you just had to guess.' Edited by jfolsen - 08/06/2019 at 10:42pm |
