If we take two rubbers with the same topsheet but different sponge hardness, is it generally true that it is harder to serve with the harder one? For the sake of the discussion, let's assume an 1,800 USATT player using inverted europian rubbers.

it depends on your technique. I actually find it easier to serve with a harder rubber because the catapult won’t work against me. I want to put everything in my serve to make it spinny without the ball flying to far.

Hard but tacky lets you skim the ball and still fully grab it.

Yeah I have more trouble with the catapult than anything else. So harder rubbers seem to give a little more leeway the brush without popping it up. For me, it seems that a pliable grippy top sheet plus a harder sponge is ideal for serving. Not ideal for all of my game, but for serving. |

Depends on the rubber, but usually harder rubber is better for serving. Easier to keep the ball low and tight. When serving with hard rubber, most of your spin is generated with the top sheet. You typically don't compress the sponge much. Dignics and H3 are really good for service. I haven't tried any ESN rubbers harder than 48 (by ESN scale) and that one was Gewo Nexxus El-Pro 48, which isn't really that hard. In play, it's hardness feels the same or softer than Rasanter R47.

A lot of equipment changes will mess up your serving for a little while. It comes back.
