Just rewatched Fan Zhendong vs Ma Long. Fan Zhendong has hands down the best BH down-the-line shot in the world. How does he produce so much speed and yet so much control when he does this shot?! It's really mind baffling how fast that shot is. Even Zhang Jike and Wang Hao don't do their BHs down the line so straight and so aggressive.

It looks to me like a punch shot right off the bounce.

He has a great range of BH shots, and generates a lot of power too. I like that full-arm BH swipe he does...

This was a great signature until I realised it was overrated.

His FH has improved drastically from what I last remember. He was able to go toe-to-toe with Ma Long in FH rallies..
I remember in the WTC trials the commentators were mentioning how strong his BH was but his FH was weak.. it certainly didn't look that way in the National Games. If he keeps improving, I think we might have a new rising star. Absolutely amazing that he went from undiscovered talent to nearly eliminating the top three in such a short time!

I haven't been playing/watching that long. Only about 4 years - maybe just as Ma Long got into his stride. Was Ma Long this strong when he first showed up?

Ma Long was pretty damn good at age 16 as well... as good as FZD? Hard to tell. |

Did he grow another 2 inches from last year :). I remember him as a big chubby boy, but now he's just big, and has the same build like Demitrij Ovtcharov.

Compare to Ma Long, FZD plays a very different style.
The final's match is commented by one of the national team coaches, here are the differences he mentioned between the two: 1. Ma Long plays with a lot of speed, but his shots are not as spinny and powerful (this is probably noticeable at the pro level) 2. FZD plays with a lot of spin, therefor his shots are more powerful; hence there was a comparison to ZJK since ZJK's shots are also very spinny and powerful Before, everyone in the National team knows FZD has great backhand but weak FH so folks tend to focus on his FH when they play against him. But now FZD improved his FH, he's really formidable. He has beaten Yan An during this run to final plus he has beaten Zhou Yu during the year. FZD can be the up and coming guy to watch out for.

I've mentioned the recurring knee brace thing from a few players to a couple of my friends that have played heavily in china. Me bringing up the knee problem as a concern just made them laugh at me and say "Have you ever trained in china?"
Xu Xin was in a slump before he was using a knee brace, I think he'll snap out of it.
