This isn't a call for equipment recommendations or about buying equipment. I just think it would be interesting to hear why people chose the sponge thickness they did. So let's hear it :)

1.9-2.0mm

Primarily because the rubber i like in 2.1-2.2 is too heavy in that thickness.

I usually get max thickness, because I prefer maximum spin. Where I would normally lose control in this thickness, I gain back by using a slowish all wood blade.

For many people using a thick and especially soft sponge, going to a soft slow blade would make control even worse, since they would have so much dwell.

Chinese rubber= max on FH to maximize looping.
Non Chinese tensors 2.0 or 1.9 on FH to maintain control.
BH- prefer 1.8, allows more diversity of play. Easier to chop, block, and push. I also cannot seem to get good sink into sponge on my BH loops. Also prefer to lighten my blade.

Real men play TTX with wood bats in some honky tonk somewhere like Cut Bank, Montana, where the barmaids have tattooed forearms bigger than Popeye's, the quarter a play juke box doesn't work most of the time, and the Friday night house band does their thing behind chicken wire.

Do you mean to tell me with all gravity, young man, that Cut Bank, Montana, honky tonks, barmaids with tattooed Popeye forearms, juke boxes that won't take your quarters, and house bands playing behind chicken wire don't exist?  Forsooth and gadzooks, stripling.

I'll make you an offer I'm confident that you'll be real man enough not to refuse.  You make up a story. It has to be table tennis related, and it can even refer to maximum thickness sponge, and your manliness in being able to employ such dangerous material with I presume some degree of effectiveness. I do hope, however, that your manhood does not depend entirely upon the thickness of the table tennis rubber you use, and that other factors come into play as well.

For the record, when I used sponge, from BTY D-13 1.5 mm. to Bryce 2.1 mm. back in 2005, nobody brought up the subject of manliness.  If the other guy had a Tec-9, you used a Tec-9 too.  If the other guy were to come armed with a rapier, the Code of the Hills required that you meet him on the field of battle similarly equipped.

(cole ely)  Read much William Carlos Williams?

A bit, Cole, a bit.  Here is my homage to Williams' A Red Wheelbarrow:

So much depends
On the thickness of your rubber
Fresh from the factory

Moist with manly sweat and Revolution
Throw angle perfect as taste of mulberry
In the dry desert drenched sun

Oh let me sleep now

$80,000 car:  Porsche or Escalade?  what would you buy?  It depends what you want to do with your car.

If you loop drive from way behind the table, you would want max sponge.  For a blocking/hitting game at the table, you would want a stiff blade with no thicker sponge than 1.8.

There is ONE BIG PROBLEM if you buy rubbers with sponges less than 2.0: you canNOT sell it in this forum.  don't ask me how I know.  Cry
