Would it be effective to take the handle off a cpen blade and  put on a jpen handle and cork pieces? How would it play?

It would play like a Jpen.

I think the balance will also move. if you change the handle with cork, the blade will be more head heavy.
If you want to minimize this change of balance, then you can cut only part of the handle nearest to the blade and change that with cork.

The best would be to buy a real J-pen. You can choose either rounded square or square shape.

OP,

I have seen many top level amatures, and a former pro or two glue some cork to the top of the handle to make it more J-Pen like, also easier to twiddle.

Yeah, like that concept, but not as wide, but higher in height.
