I've seen many people, including myself, getting misled by significant variations in speed ratings given by manufacturers. So, here I'm compiling a list of blades according to their speeds ranging from DEF- to OFF+
I haven't played with many blades so the list I'm putting is severely deficient. All experianced players from MYTT are requested to add to the list below so that new and budding EJs can buy blades fearlessly. The ratings in the list are accordong to blade speed for 40+ balls. So the blades which were rated fast for 40mm are rated somewhat slower DEF- : DEF : DEF+ : ALL- : ALL : ALL+ : Yasaka Extra Offensive OFF- : Nittaku Septear, Joola Rossi Emotion, Avalox P700 OFF : Yasaka Goiabao 5, Stiga Clipper OFF+ : Donic Ovtcharov Carbospeed, Yasaka Max Carbon 3D |

It is tough to say a certain blade is such and such speed, because many blades have different speeds given different inputs. Many blades play between a range of 2 levels, like say All+ and OFF-, while some have a wider playing range.
Take a look at how Tibhar rates most of its blades. They have a 180 semi circle representing the possible speed range and will paint in read above the scale its playing range, like say from All+ to low OFF range. That is neeto and kinda like a speedometer, easy to understand. I think showing the likely playing range is a lot more responsible. However, the blade may have different outputs among different players given the same attempted input. That makes it very difficult to accurately represent performance. About the most effective way to represent the possible range is to do a DYNAMIC test putting ti through many different stroke situations.

Blade can be slow but springy, or flexy, which can give impression of speed. I had such blade, i used it very successfully for loop/block/punch game, it was like slower off blade. But, I play close to table. From distance this blade is slow, like def.
TBS can be slow if your srroke is slow, but on smash it is very fast. It can block well against weak loops, but on good loop it can send ball far from table. So it'all relative to playing style(and opponent :) ) I think blade for drive and blade for spin is also good rate on low level, from my own experience. |

I think manufacturers come up with blade ratings the same way. They have several players try it and then take the average. So why would something compiled here be more accurate?

Yes and no. You can take measurements of blade response without a player. Like the way the guys in the following link make tests. This method removes the player variable. What you are talking about its more of a subjective impression of a blade's performance. I do wish they made more equipment tests like the ones on the links. They are quite interesting. FdT |

Xiom blade rating is super complicate, but it help understanding characteristic.
I usually mess up all+ all- off- off are rating that quite complicate while Off+ is truly Off+, Def is truly Def. Rating is not quite accurate, it's based on preference and judged from feeling. Such as Andro tempertech Off+ , I feel it's not Off+ at all it's more like Off. Edited by Crowsfeather - 01/30/2017 at 11:13pm |
