What is the standard for cutting when attaching new rubber?
I've used different kinds of scissors and exacto knives. Neither of them have really done a great job. I guess this $20 pair of scissors I had made the easier and cleanest cut. I have an EJ friend who uses $100 surgical scissors. Any recommendations? butcher knives? Pizza cutters?

Im happy with my surgical knife (scalpel). the handle cost like 5$. There's a british brand , same model that costs about $25.
https://www.amazon.ca/BDEALS-Scalpel-Handle-Surgical-Instruments/dp/B001D72R46/ref=pd_sim_469_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4X88FD5CY552P4JT1YTM and these blades...also not very expensive.... https://www.amazon.ca/Surgical-Universal-Replacement-World-Hobbies/dp/B006M6GMCQ/ref=pd_sim_328_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=X7CY8TQ8H272ATKDDBC1 Swann Norton is the fancy handle if you want a higher end handle...but they fit the same blades. https://www.amazon.ca/Swann-Morton-Handle-5-10-Blades/dp/B004OIAVJY/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1507061166&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=Swann+Norton+scalpel+handle Anyway, the cut is razor sharp with a scalpel. If you use a brand new blade you still have to do about 2 or three passes before the rubber is completely cut. FdT Edited by Fulanodetal - 10/03/2017 at 4:09pm |

Seems like so far nobody uses scissors. I sometimes mess up when using a blade of some kind and make an "angled" cut.

I use scissors and the key is to cut with very quick and small strokes, close to the axis joining the 2 blades.

I use a stencil/surgical knife, that is sold on megaspin. Replace the blade every few cuts. It’s buttery smooth and gives that perfect smooth edge if you are careful. As long as you keep the angle of the blade perpendicular to the racket while cutting you won’t damage the blade. I used to use nail scissors with curved edges, those were good but still nothing compares to a surgical blade.

If using xacto knife or scalpel make two cuts. First for the sponge then finish with the topsheet. Swiff, scissors are fine. Do like fatt said small strokes close to the axis. Last tip, a wet blade helps because the rubber doesn't catch it as much.

I used to use a blade. Switched to high quality German scissors a few years ago. I like being able to cut without requiring a special work surface that is needed if you use a blade.

I use regular scissors
The sponge on the sides isn't perfectly rounded, a tiny shabby, but it's really no big deal. It doesn't matter |

Cutter for the sponge and finish the topsheet with scissors.
The success of cutting the sponge is a sharp (new) and oiled razor. Never start cutting the sponge if the razor is dry, it will damaged it all. Edited by TT newbie - 10/03/2017 at 9:47pm |

I used to use scalpels but most of the time it took two cuts to get all the way through. Eventually I switched to sciccors and that's what I use now.
I have a friend that uses a scalpel and gets beautiful clean cuts. So he swears by scalpels. On the other hand, all the pros I've ever met use scissors. I've never met one, Chinese or European, using a scalpel. My scissors a $20 titanium and very sharp. They work pretty well, and certainly a lot faster than scalpels, but I'm not completely satisfied with the cleanness of the cuts. I would be happy to find either better scissors or a really good scalpel.

You should be able to find decent scalpels for 10$ or less including blades.
Note: when using scalpels or utility knives, the surface you’re cutting on is very important for getting a good, smooth cut. If you go the scalpel route (works well for me), invest in a $5 cutting mat. |

About that electric rubber cutting machine....
A) the guy did not show a close up of the edge after cutting. I would have liked to see how clean the cut is. B) Seems like overkill. And expensive. A scalpel and a cutting mat is all well and good. I certainly don't care if all pros use scissors, if the scalpel works for me, then that is what really matters. https://www.amazon.ca/Swann-Morton-Handle-5-10-Blades/dp/B004OIAVJY/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1507122903&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=Swann+BNorton+scalpel FdT

I guess I will stick with my xacto knife. I completely forgot about taking 2 passes to make the cut (it's been a while since I've done this). I used to do that and it worked so much better. This time I used only one pass and just pressed the blade really hard. The cut isn't nearly as good as it was in the past.
Same here. I've never met any pros, but I've seen pros putting rubber on. They always use some kind of scissors. |

I use an X-Acto knife with a #11 blade. There are 3 grades of #11 blades, regular, stainless steel, and an even more durable grade. I have a lot of people in my club come to me to have rubbers trimmed. I use a Megaspin turntable, which, alas, is no longer sold. I generally make a test cut in the upper corner of the rubber before trimming to test the sharpness of the blade, and also to evaluate how the sponge cuts. If it's not a clean slice through the sponge, I either change the blade, or in rare circumstances, experiment with different techniques. Calibra LT and Rozena are the two most difficult sponges to cut cleanly. I make one or two passes through the sponge and topsheet before cutting completely through. I usually toss a regular quality blade after one or two rubbers, or if I notice that the point is no longer sharp. The stainless steel blades are slightly more expensive, but are usually good for 3-4 rubbers, and I try to buy those whenever possible. Pro Edge makes number 11 blades which are about the same quality as X-Acto's regular blades. Any others I have tried, particularly Revel have been very disappointing.

That's because they don't care about a clean cut. Their rubbers won't stay on long enough for that to matter |

I do about 10 rackets a day, and this is the correct answer. I have a very old video on my site with similar advice.

My preferred cutting equipment,
Surgical handle $5.00 with set of removable blades #24 Wooden round cutting board $5.00 Alcohol pads set of 200 for $2.00 (optional, but very convenient for wiping off residue from a blade to maintain clean cutting path) Please see a few pics of cut rubbers I do not apply much pressure during cutting. Optimal cut through takes 2 tries. I Always keep cutting blade perpendicular to the cutting board to avoid angled cut, which is easy to do by using edge of tennis blade as a guide. Takes about 3 to 4 minutes to complete one rubber. Longer then by using scissors, but quality of a cut is not comparable. 1 Cutting blade usually good for 3-4 rubbers |
