Can anyone recommend a blade sealant that is non-toxic? To my limited knowledge, most wood sealants are toxic and need to be operated with care. Thanks.

What do you mean? Toxic by ingestion, inhalation, skin contact, etc.?
Water-based lacquers are usually non-toxic by inhalation.

Don't use hair spray - 

we are no longer using rubber cement and speed glue.

it was a fad during that era for people who didn't want to lacquer or seal their blade and needed to change rubbers often.

i highly doubt that it will provide protection against today's much stronger bonding water based glues.

these modern glues can rip a top ply to shreds if they are not reasonably sealed.
