Topic: celluloid balls Posted: 04/25/2018 at 5:48pm |
Hi everyone,
I am a passive table tennis ball collector and through time I gathered around 75 balls. Only 9 of them are plastic, all others are celluloid, 16 of them are old school 38 mm :)
I keep them in two 3 liter glass jars.
So recently I had a comment that it could be dangerous as celluloid can be easily ignited and it burns viciously. It kind of freaked me out. So maybe somebody has knowledge on this celluloid matter? Could it self-ignite or something?

They won't self-ignite. They are flammable, true, but unless they are near a fire, or a stove, no worries. I have a lot of celluloid balls as well, and have had them for many years. In fact I even have 38mm balls.

I kept celluloid balls for decades in plastic containers. They won't ignite.

I keep my balls in a glass jar also for quite some time, maybe 7 years or so and did not worry until I got a comment that this is dangerous a couple of days ago.... They are nowhere near the direct sources of heat and I don't think they get direct sunlight too. Although direct sunlight shouldn't be dangerous?
By the way, did anyone see Nuovo Cinema Paradiso? :)

Maybe just put the lid on? If they ignite for some reason, they'll run out of oxygen quickly.

Yes, I could screw a metal lid on. I had this idea in my mind and had the same logic, but then I thought that maybe they could overheat more easily, or in case of fire combustion gasses could build up and explode or smth... the thing is that neither of us here are specialist on this very niche topic, so we are just guessing and don't really know if we are on correct path or not...
So if there are some serious specialists on this topic (maybe some chemist or fireman), it would be really nice to hear their take on this subject also

The celluloid ball fire hazard media blitz has worked, people are now hesitant to store them, after years of using them in clubs and home rooms.

Maybe. I personally didn't catch the media blitz, but got a comment from another forum. So now I am trying to find if there is some truth somewhere out where

If you light them they burn. Celluloid production in factories requires considerable precautions because materials are flammable. But ceulloid balls will never spontaneously ignite in a bottle. You have your answer. Enough said pn this quite silly topic.
