I am curious to know the reasons how a manufacturer decide to produce the type of blade when they introduce a new material construction. Normally they start with shake hand version and maybe they will stop at that. But some will follow with C-pen or J-pen. Lately Nittaku made a plan to produce the Glass Cross and Unidirectional Carbon, and I noticed that the J-pen version is different from the J-pen Reversible version in thickness and speed.
To summarize : What is the reasons to decide either to produce only Shake Hand version or also other versions like C-pen, J-pen and J-pen Reversible. Any opinions ? |

Just for grins, here's my theory: Manufactures only start to make penhold blades after the sale of the shakehand blade reaches certain threshold. Let's say the ratio of pen to shake is 1 to 50 (for 50 shake blades sold, only 1 pen blade is sold). Still, this doesn't mean that as soon as they sold the first 50 shake blades, they start to make that 1 penhold blade for sale. No sirrie, there's this economies of scale thing that says that it's only worthwhile to start making a blade if they can sale at least, say, 100 copies of it. This means they won't produce any pen until after they sold 5000 shakes. At that threshold, they start making 100 pen blades for sale since they know that based on the 50:1 ratio, chances are they can sale most if not all of these 100 penhold blades. |

It would be sad for penholders if that is the case. However Nittaku is planning to launch the Glasscross Unidirectional Carbon blade for shake hand version more or less at the same time with J-pen and J-pen Reversible version (the name is not the same though, they named it Wolfeed for penhold version and Noveliar for shake hand version). But they do not include the C-pen version.
Then there are some differences in speed, weight and thickness between J-pen and J-pen Reversible. |

I believe Bty was the first who came out with Unidirectional Carbon blades in the form of the Kreanga Carbon. Now it looks like Nittaku's taking a page from Bty's playbook and starts making Unidirectional Carbon blades of their own? It won't be any surprise to me, Aeoliah, if you'll be the first to get a hold of this newfangled Glasscross thing when it comes out. Be sure to let us know how it compares to your current Violin. I still wonder how Unidirectional Carbon really stacks up against Violin/Acoustic's wood.
