    Posted: 01/13/2020 at 11:34pm
I'm starting a new phase of my life and something that has been in the back of my mind for a long time is to get some legitimate Jpen training. I live in Utah, USA where not a single person plays Jpen. Some play Cpen, but no coaches. I am more than willing to travel, even to South Korea or Japan if need be. I've been playing for 6 years and really want to dive deep into this. I have always loved playing Jpen more than any other style.

Does anyone know of any clubs or players in USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, etc. that might offer quality training? Anything to point me in the right direction would be awesome.

Do you have very good footwork? If not, there is not too much point to get the training.
Other than that, Jpen technique is almost  the same as traditional cpen. I think Mingwei Ju in CA is a pretty good traditional cpen coach/player. Find his match video on youtube to see if it's what you want.

I think there are some Korean clubs in LA where you could probably find a jpen coach.  If you are happy to travel to Korea I am very sure you will find more than one.

In the meantime you can start doing a lot of three point forehand exercises. A lot. LOL

Look up Bong-Geun Kim in LA.

I have been accused of having good penhold footwork by many including  the best player in the state, Joey Cochran (I get lazy with shakehand).

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions and quick replies.

Thanks for this. I've also been watching Yoo Nam Kyu's lessons.

"Jpen is dead." Well an awful lot of people still play it for it being dead, but not at pro level. I'm not trying to become a world class player, I just want to improve and I enjoy the game most when playing Jpen

One thing I didn't mention is I play RPB too. It is actually stronger than my FH which is why I want to get training for my FH and TPB. I've tried Cpen a thousand times and it just feels wrong. Jpen is so comfy.

For those who say RPB on a Jpen is more difficult/impossible:  I was training with the ~2350 player mentioned above and it wasn't until an hour and a half later that he looked at my blade and realized it was a 10.5 single ply Jpen. The whole session he commented on how smooth my RPB was...

Sorry, I get on that soapbox when people say something is impossible when its not. It actually plays to my advantage because everyone assumes I don't have a backhand.

I came across quite a few of Ryu Seung Min coaching sessions on YouTube but they're in Korean I think...

If you are going to really play jpen for reals you need to slap a color sheet on the bh and forget that rpb.

Seriously I love playing against jpen.  More styles = More fun. Good for you trying it.

a friend of mine who is a jpen player with long pips on reverse for chopping is the number one player in my local club.  There are three of us (~2000) who can't even beat him.  I'd say Jpen is still alive!

i also played with Jpen for about a year, with RPB reverse tho.  I can say that play Jpen with RPB was really really fun.  The fast loops and the powerful punch blocks were so crisp.  The only down side is the timing needs to be perfected.  Otherwise, jpen with RPB or even traditional jpen is a great fun style.  I definitely see myself playing traditional jpen in the future
