Wow, more motivation for Lei Kou! First, his hometown team doesn't pick him #1 and now his Portland team is predicted to finish last in the West division. Having him on the Paddlers will just make his teammates that much better. I think that the US Open champion has a real good chance to carry his team into the playoffs.

So will Kou Lei be for Portland what Messi is for Miami? That's the kind of star MLTT needs!

And Kou Lei is 5 months younger than Messi, so that all makes sense.

I regret sounding like a hater here, because I think it's amazing that SOMEONE is stepping up to do something potentially huge for table tennis since USATT will never elevate the sport in any way.
But when I watched the demo of the format during America's teams, I thought the format was absolute doo-doo. None of the players seemed to know what was going on, the spectators (can't even make a 'dozens of us' joke) were lost but trying to be supportive. It was an absolute mess that just screamed to me like they're trying to reinvent the wheel. Way over-complicated. If a bunch of players had trouble understanding it, I don't see how they expect people who have never watched table tennis to follow it.

First match:
Lorentz beats Khanin 2-1. So far it doesn't look scripted - must be because of the writers' strike

I wonder how many tickets sold. Looks like all 10 of them are enjoying quality table tennis.

Some good matches, but the Golden Gimmick's gotta go... It just led to a complete blowout, 16-5 for Carolina. Just use the Indian UTT format.

I like it. It was the best part of the Crocs. vs. Princeton match.

Crocs show that the preseason rankings mean nothing. Will the Paddlers do the same?

The Revolution was missing two key players, Liang and Ly. They are playing in the Pan American Games. I think we would have seen a different outcome had it not been for that.

Florida still had the edge. Even though Senura performed well and exceeded expectations in his singles match against Levinsky (who in my opinion looks a bit out of shape), it would have been an entirely different set of match ups in the Golden Game and I doubt if two choppers would have been used in the doubles match.
One thing for certain MLTT put on a show last night. The camera work was fantastic, the commentary was spot on and the play was exceptional. Enzo Angles will be tough to beat. The wild card in this league and player to watch is going to be rising star Adi Sareen of The Seattle Spinners

I agree it was great to watch. A couple of minor notes: the scoreboard was wrong a few times and the game scores of the current match would drop off right after the game. I would like to see the game scores stay up. Also, maybe they could have a couple of ballkids pick up the stray ball between points. Personally, I don't like to see all the balls lying around the court.

Apparently, the Florida Crocs are continuing the Florida Gators chomp tradition.

It looked like he may have kicked the table after losing that point and got a yellow. Hazin had a yellow card earlier. Must be two yellow cards for the team equals a red and loss of a point.

What is UTT format compared with MLTT? i think i finally understood the scoring system after watching the first two days and a friend explaining it to me lol at first i thought it was just all leading to the full golden game that determined the final score but then i realized with the help of a friend's description that it's 1 point for each game set and then the gg is 6 points. So a score of like 16-10 is actually a very close team match

UTT just plays 4 singles and 1 doubles for a total of 15 games, with each game counting for 1 point. Half of the singles are men, the other half women, the doubles is mixed.
I can see why MLTT wants to try something new and emphasize the team aspect even more, but don't think the "golden game" (which is played to 21) should count for 6 total points - that's 3 times the weight of the other games. And apparently to mitigate this impact somewhat they added a rule by which the team that's leading after the first 15 games gets to start the GG with a point advantage equivalent to the lead in games. But that can lead to blowouts like in the first match of the season, where a 10-5 became inevitably a 16-5. And at least on this first weekend I feel a bit bad for the female players (only one per team) - it seems that most are used in the doubles, and then of course (by necessity) in the Golden Game, most likely against strong male opponents where it's difficult for them to score a point (e.g. Angela Guan yesterday). That may change when Amy or Lily join the league, but the imbalance will probably remain.

I agree with you. They play 15 games just to have a 1, 3 or 5 point lead in the golden game which ultimately determines the winner of the match, unless a team leads 11-4 or more.
I also think that they should have the women play in a singles each team match. The West has Amy, Lily and Rachel Sung on different teams so maybe it will be a bit different next weekend.

The announcers just said that winning the team match doesn't really matter. The standings are all based on the points gained during each match.

In the first match today Carolina led Princeton 11-4, which had them start the Golden Game with a 5-0 advantage (5 points being the maximum possible here). Princeton fought back to 18-18, and it came down to Jeremy Hazin vs Angela Guan for the final points. Angela managed to win 1 point out of 4, but Hazin secured the win 21-19. Final result therefore: Carolina 17, Princeton 4 !!
