It has become 100% crazy IMO.
Even if the old system protected too much some players, this new ranking is more chocking to me. A few exemples: -XX suddenly drops to 81; -The Lebruns brothers are now 43 and 77 in the world after only a few wins in a "little" tournament. -Fan Siqi suddenly n° 20 in the world; -does someeone know who Marion Alhodaly is ? Well, she is now n°40; -Hana Goda is 42; -Miu Hirano....is 44 so after Hana Goda.... -Hitomi Sato is 60 -Miwa Harimoto only won 3 matches in the main draw of 1 signle "little" tournament and she is already 71 in the world. For some of those players like Lebrun, Miwa, of course we know they will reach a better ranking but well....the problem is the way this ranking has been given to them just after winning 3 matches.... |

It seems the difference compared to last month is that the initial ranking component was dropped.
That term was a weighting of the points held using the old ranking system, as of Dec 2020. The weighting had been progressively reduced from 80% to 20% still as of April, but it's disappeared in this version. Be it accidental or intentional this montth, once this component is retired, the ITTF has a pure "race" ranking, like the ATP. It's then logical that the few players who have performed well in the last few months rank much higher, and those holding big tournament results (worlds, Olympics) are the least affected, since their points still apply beyond 1Y. https://www.ittf.com/2022/01/30/ittf-approves-changes-world-rankings-regulation/ |

There is no old or new ranking system here. The current system has been running since 01/2018.
The initial points contained points from 2019, that had been provisionally extended to 24 months(see page 1, Changes on 15th September 2020) due to COVID-19. They remained at 80% in 12/2020 and were supposed to be reduced to 0% in 12/2021(see page 12, 6. TRANSITION PLAN:...) but were instead frozen at 60% from 05/2021 to 11/2021, then 50% from last week of 11/2021 to 01/2022, then 20% from 02/2022 to 04/2022, before finally gone for good starting 05/2022(see page 2-3, Updates). I don't think it is normal that players under 15 for instance get ittf points (senior ranking) from their participation in youth tournaments.

It helps keep the youth motivated. Also, it's the U19 category of the youth events that gains points, and the points are a small fraction of their senior counterparts. Competition even at U19 is very tough. Miwa Harimoto (age 13) is beating up on very good senior pros. Really young players can surprise. Remember Mima Ito at age 14 winning a Platinum World Tour Event. Miwa's brother also won a senior tournament at age 14. The big problem right now is just the lack of senior tournaments.

The Lebrun brothers will rank in the top 20s at least. They are very good.

Thought it was weird that they'd remove the initial points without any notification. Still, the right order would have been to announce it before the ranking update.

[QUOTE=piligrim]5 Truls MOREGARD
6 Darko JORGIC Are they that good???[/QUOTE Not at all. They're probably somewhere 20-50 in reality and XuXin is definitely not number 81 even with poor recent performance it's likely to be top 30 no sweat

If you were following zeio and me on the JTTA Asian Games 2022 Qualifier, 4/9-10 thread, none of this would have been a surprise

No sweat? Gimme a
! Xu Xin is, of course, still top material, but as is the CNT's wont it looks like he (and Ma Long) are being phased out, left to whither. |

Wow. I just did bump into an injection vulnerability on this forum, by accident. I might just as well have included malicious in-browser script code there (I didn't).

The new system value way too much on participation and even if you loose, you get good amount of points. People say, it needs time to correct itself. I just think its a clever way for ITTF to get more non european/asian/chinese into the world rankings. and now on a weekly basis

20-50? LOL. He just beat LJK. Another final appearance for Moregard. He deserves his high ranking In my opinion.

20-50 was a fair estimate given his losses at that point in time, even now. He had two 3-2 wins(Falck WR37 and CCY WR17) at WTT SCT ESS 2022, trailing in both matches. Moregard has only made 3 finals of senior international events, 2 in 2021 and 1 in 2022. Once we look past that, he's actually worse than LYJ and Miwa's brother.
The problem with your biased/double standard is that you don't realize the gap between top 10 and top 50 is smaller than the difference in number. It's very competitive. |

No, I don't spend hours each day on this forum, more like 5 minutes a day. If you want to spend a few hours a day on this forum answering a childish, rude old fart like zeio, that is your choice.

I think Given his performance over the last year
Moregard deserves top 10, or at least top 15 Not sure if he is number 5 in the world though, but he just finished a tournament in 2nd place today so hey!!? Edited by troubadour - 07/17/2022 at 10:56am |
