That looks like a 1960's Barna Original to me.

This is a picture of my 1950's Barna original, which as you can see has a different handle.

The blade plays well with rubbers like 2mm Innova Premium and Sriver L

I'm planning to put 802-40 on it.

This is a picture of my 3 ply Maxply Fort, with the original rubbers pips out sponge rubbers.

I have another Maxply Fort blade, which I removed the old rubbers from and put on a pair of 2mm LKT XP Pro. The bat weighs 185 grams and plays well.

***IF YOU OWN THE VINTAGE BLADE SHARE IT'S PICTURES  ON THIS POST***
Hi Peter,
You are most likely correct the blade is probably from the early  60'S.
Attached you will find the Barna 3 pl as well as Barna "SUPER" i got from my Dad when I was kid in 70's both in the very good condition .I still use the Barna "SUPER" when I play the Hard-bat (for the nostalgic reasons). Rubber has been replaced several years ago but the 3 pl like the Original" is in its unchanged condition.

Last week i won an Ebay bid on 2 Dunlop Barna Original blades, like those in the top pictures, for 9.14 (approx $18.50), which was lucky, as I expected them to go for a higher price.

The bid ended on Easter sunday and i suspect that is why the collector's who pay the higher prices missed them.

This a Barna super blade I had until I gave it a friend's daughter to learn with.

It was fitted with 2mm 729 Lighteining and it played superbly.

In hindsight I wished I'd kept it.

I want one of these Barnas.  How do these play as hardbats?  Pretty fast?

I haven't heard of the Alpha.

Here is another old Dunlop, an Allround Dual purpose. quite a slow blade.

The blade has 2.2mm six Shooter forehand and 2.2mm Aces backhand.

I gave it one of our young players at coaching, as their first bat.

A pair of Barna Hock blades, both of which weigh 156 grams.

When I did a bounce test, I was surprised to find that the speed and bounciness on one side of the blade was faster than the other.

A case of a slower backhand.

I didn't realise Dunlop had produced an asymettrical Barna blade, but it makes sense having a faster forehand and slower more controllable backhand.

And finally a picture of the 3 different Barna's together

Left : 1950's Barna original, with a blade face that is close to the Petr Korbel in size.

Middle : The Barna Maxply fort, with a compact head, which is close to the Tibhar Samsonov Alpha in size.

Right : The hock blade, which has the biggest blade face of the three.

Unfortunately I don't recognise the blade.

It looks like it's a 7 ply blade.

What is the weight? and how does it play?

Posted By: sbd1
Date Posted: 03/28/2008 at 9:04pm
It is a 5 ply blade  compact size and well suited for "Live rubber" as well as short pips.

I have never heard of a Hock Barna blade. Two different companies. I don't believe Mr. Hock ever made blades for the Dunlop company.

I referred to it as a Hock blade because of the shape of the blade face, i.e. designed to be wider and bigger for defensive play.

We refer to that design of blade as a Hock blade in the UK.

I think Hock blades are actually bigger. I have a Dunlop Barna and it is the same exact shape and size as the Butterfly Defense Alpha. But the most famous Hock blade, the 74, is larger.
Cheers!

No, sorry. The one I have is similar to the one posted by Borko above. The "Vintage Barna" as he refers to it. It has a red teardrop Dunlop label on the handle. The blade is three ply, and wighs 113gr without rubber.

Nice to see that some classics are still being used, and not just collecting dust in someone's attic. Notice that these (and even the older, 80's Stiga blades) are much more solid than the paperweights sold today. Its yet another case of worsening craftmanship.

Regarding old Stiga's I have a 1979 Stiga Allround Wood, with Hans Alser handle; in the TT bag and it plays well with 2mm Xtend.

My 1976 Stiga Allround has 2mm 35% Quattro on it and that's being used by a youngster at coaching.

I do recall seeing a 10 year old using a Kjell Jojannson Offensive Wood, earlier this year too.

Yours appears to be similar to one of the blades shown earlier in this thread. Probably made in the late 50s early 60s. As to the price...Whatever an interested party would be willing to pay.

It was my first pips racket with a white sponge. Still very fast i suppose, now i'm going to have to clean out the garage while looking for it ...i was trying to strip or thinking about stripping the rubber off last i recalled?

*edit* look what i found and a couple other penholds ..btw i hit a few balls with it...SLOWWWWWW :)

I have a story to tell.

My father-in-law would be so excited to see these blades. I'm gonna print these and send to him. He has told me in 1950's in India, there were table tennis clubs in YMCA. The British also brought Barna blades to India. He has told me it was very costly at that time - close to half of his salary.

hi Peter C, i really like the Dunlop-Barna Super-  the conic looks exactly like what i want.  i currently use a taper in that same configuration and will be changing to a full conic.
thanks for the pictures,  charlie

Glad I could be of help Charlie.

It would be good to see a modern blade, with that kind of conical handle.

Speaking of re-creating classic handle shapes, Charlie, can you design a blade with a handle that recreates either the classic 1970s Stiga Alser handle or the 1990s Butterfly Cresail?  Those were nice and large, a frequent theme of many people on this forum is that they like blade X but the handle is too small.  Butterfly used to have a wide range of handle shapes on different blades and now they don't.

I'm very proud to show pictures of my "new" Dunlop Alpha (Barna) defensive blade. I am more than satisfied with characteristics of this blade. Just bought it 11.07.10.

It just so happens that my father still has the exact same Barna paddle like what ThomasJ posted in this thread years back.  My dad gave it to my younger brother so here are a few pics of it.  I'm hoping someone here will be willing to sell me their Barna since I've been trying to find one now for myself for years now.

On the side of the handle on the same side as the black rubber you can actually see a letter "B" in script (cursive) form hence the reason why I believe it's a Barna, plus it looks identical to ThomasJ's paddle minus the colored lettering that his paddle still has.

Apologies, I'm a little late to this forum, not sure if anyone's still watching. I stumbled across it in a Google search for images of pips out rubber configurations. The picture is of my old Dunlop Barna Super blade (c. 1967). The original rubber, red on both sides, had a thin layer of sponge, well deteriorated after 40+ years. I replaced it with early Valor Premier, and it's a fantastic hardbat now!

I'm happy to add to the archive.

Hello,

I think your blade is from the end of 1940's.
I have two models, as the second with printed plastic logo red label is from 1950's.
I saw somewhere a real picture of Victor Barna with the same blade in 1952 or 1954.
