that umpire's job during xu xin vs zhang chao match is really questionable

xu xin did proper and good serve and even put his arm away before ball even reaches its highest toss

that umpire should be warned !! unbelievable
that kinda thing really put xu xin off easily

sigh, honestly ....blind and stupid umpire....

I agree, I saw nothing wrong with that serve and looked over it to check if it was legal. Perhaps he made contact in front of or on the white line.

That aside, thanks for the videos Fixpoint!

Unfortunately, Chinese training system is closely intertwined with their political system. In many countries you can't put many thousands of young sportsmen in training camps literally all year long, deny them almost everything but sports training (including romantic liaisons, going to movies etc), ruthlessly and routinely toss out hundreds of those who show any weakness etc etc - in every province, in every city, and so on.

Plus you need many many millions from which to choose. The number of good Chinese sportsmen is actually proof of how bad this "concentration camp" system is - compare it, for instance, with USA (4 times less population), Germany (14 times less population), UK etc. and look at the Olympic medals, number of world champions etc. In table tennis China is beating everyone for so long mostly because it is a national sport in which traditionally huge numbers of Chinese are trained and selected thru a huge system of sports schools, coaches, scouts etc. Remember how it was with Soviet domination in chess, hockey and some other sports - as soon as the communist system of closed and narrowminded training fell apart, those sports (and others) started to deteriorate there and now there is no such domination. For better or for worse, this will happen with TT and China as well - I have no doubt about that. We will probably see that (or the beginning of that process) in 20-30 years.

That fell together with an economic breakdown, though. When the wall came down, russia, was totally broke. Chinas huge economic growth has just begun and i'm rather pessimistic wether Democratization will make its way... (interesting off-topic btw.).
I'd guess TT will become less important in China while other sports will rise. Maybe we'll see (similar to the russian Oligarchs) Chinese Businessman investing into tabletennis and therefore changing the TT "infrastructure" from being dominated by the "system". Here in germany, sport depends a lot from (voluntary) support from the municipality - in times of empty pockets. I'd say China will still dominate - they won't be as strong as they are today but they'll still be #1 in the world.

Please pm me your conspiracy theories.

I am not saying they will not be a major power in TT - no doubt, they will be for many decades. But everyone even in China is saying that kids now are way more interested in other sports like soccer, basketball, tennis, even baseball. Not to mention that a lot of smart kids now go and become not sportsmen but businessmen, lawyers, etc - more opportunities have opened up...

Thanks Fixpoint! You rock.

That being said, i literally fell asleep during MS-SF  ZHANG Chao vs XU Xin. I'm implying that the game was boring, boring, boring. Not only was the game itself boring, but the players themselves looked bored. Can't blame them tho, with that crowd (or lack thereof).

There were a few great rallys tho, especially around 10:15, but other than that, so many mistakes you don't normally see from these players.

thats not the reason, nobody forces you to play table tennis and train all day, but if you have 2 choices, working as a pig for 60$ a month or having the chance of being a sportman with a luxury life, you know the answer ..there s lot of misconceptions about the chinese,, nobody puts a gun in your head and scream loop all day, if you wanna quit and let down your family is up to you.

the reason is that the chinese has turn tt into a science, and there s lot of table tennis enginners ,if we can coin a word, and there s lot of good coaches with deep understanding..some say is the number of population but , does india has good players ?

in the (very recent) past, i would have agreed with you.  i have made similar statements on past threads.

since then, however, i have had a rethink.  though it's true that they have one-up on everyone else in the world with respect to government funding of their tt program and total control of their players (and coaches), at the end of the day, it's all about training, specifically what you do at your training sessions and how you think about the game.

i now believe that, as someone said on one thread that we had this same conversation on, the rest of the world is just plain stupid (with regards to tt).

what i mean is that they have a limited view of what the game is.  and that limited view prevents them from training in the way that would prepare them to play against the chinese.

when i say "they have a limited view," i don't just mean the players, but more importantly, the coaches, too.

anyway, i was watching the persson-boll match from the tourney of champs the other day.  y'know, persson appears (unlike waldner) to still be physically fit enough to play at a high level so long as he doesn't overplay.

that said, he got blitzed by boll the other day.  and one of the things i've noticed about his game is that he still serves the same way he did back in '91 when he won the worlds in japan.

most of his serves are mid-distance or long, with side topspin or no-spin and i just don't understand what he hopes to accomplish by continuing to serve that way in this day and age.

so, what happens is that he serves long, his opponent rips it and then he's immediately behind in the point and has to counterrip every ball to seize back control or lose the point.  players today are a lot better than way back in '91, so he can't just block or lob his way back into a point like he used to.

and on top of that, now the age thing comes into play, cuz one can safely assume that he's a step slower than what he was back in '91, so he can't just run all over the place and get to every ball.  and we saw that at the olympics in the bronze medal match.  wlq pounded him good and he had to take an injury timeout.  and he actually said on his website a few days later that wlq's rips out wide to the forehand are what did him in.

so, i just think that the rest of the world needs to do a better job at training.  the lack of funding and the lack of control over the players puts them at a disadvantage, but still it's not totally impossible.

there's a lot of video out there, so everybody can see what the chinese are doing in the games and analyse their strokes and tactics.

I very much agree. If that's the most accessible way/road of getting out of your miserable way of living, then almost everyone would be flocking to that road. In China, it is TT, as here in my country is boxing and game shows. If you could just find athletes that are willing to give up almost everything just for the sole purpose of excellence of that particular sport, then the no.1 spot should not be that hard to attain.

Its simply because its the popular sport in the nation with the most people. And you can play it anywhere. You don't have to be rich, or join a country club, or have enough people in your town to form teams. I'm sure as the western sports become more popular in China kids will be playing less table tennis, but they have a huge talent pool so Chinese TT dominance isn't going anywhere.

If there was such thing as 1-on-1 basketball, or 1-on-1 US-style football, the individual US players would be just as dominant on the world scene. Its what the kids are playing.

Sorry about hijacking this thread.
