will start today, i think.

i just happened to take a look at the tv schedules for shanghai sports and cctv5.

according to the schedule, shanghai sports will show some of the women's trials tonight starting at  9 pm ET (10 am tuesday morning over there).  then they are gonna show some more starting at 7 am ET tomorrow (that's 8 pm tuesday night in china).

now the cctv5 schedule says they will show the women's team trials wednesday night from 9 pm ET and then from 11:45 pm ET (or 10 am and 11:45 am thursday morning in china).

so, i'm wondering who's right, shanghai sports or cctv5??  i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

anyhow, cctv5 will then start up with the men's trials at 1:45 am ET friday morning (2:45 pm friday afternoon in china) and 3:35 am ET saturday morning (4:35 pm saturday afternoon in china).

so, there's gonna be a lot of TT on tv this week, cuz you also have the euro top-12 this weekend.

enjoy!!

I'm surprised there aren't more people watching this. The best women's table tennis is right here, for free, at convenient times (except in the morning) for those in the Canada / US time zones.

I don't think anyone will be recording the videos, so the scores from last night's coverage:

This morning, there was...

Now that Fixpoint has posted videos, maybe I should stop keeping the score...

oh noooo~ Ding Ning didn't do very well...losing all those close matches...I hope this doesn't slow her progress in international events, maybe she'll get the coaches nomination if she doesn't make it in outright, winning the Asian championships and getting a lose second in the pro tour finals surely must count for something...

This so-called 'Moscow Express' tourney is part of the process to select team members for the upcoming World Team Championship.

They need to pick 5 or 6, so it is almost sure to include Ding Ning, with the other favourites being Guo Yue, Liu SW, Li XX, and may be Guo Yan.

There has been some fuss about picking the next 'No. 1' to replace Zhang YN's leadership.        It has turned out to be not that easy as no one has jumped out.    The 'old' gang of Guo Yue and Li XX and the new 'gang' of Liu SW and Ding N just seem to take turn falling flat (relatively speaking).     The resurgence of Guo Yan complicates it further.

Personally I think neither of the above is that urgent.         It is difficult to imagine any other teams challenging the Chinese at the Team World event.

However, the selection for 2 participants for London 2012 Singles is a bit of headache for Coach Shi.

It seems like they're replaying the same old stuff from this morning on Shanghai Sports right now. I'm disappointed. Oh well, at least I'll get to watch the last game between Ding Ning and Wu Yang.

Only 1 (one) spot for Moscow is determined by this tournament - there will be more trials coming up later, and there will also be some coaches' picks. After all, the Worlds are not until May.

ugh, Ding Ning playing against Wu Yang was just disappointing, she played so timidly, just push, push, pushed. Yang seemed to attack more than she did. I dont know why she played like that, she had no problems consistently looping her chops...just boring...

I think it's live, except the schedule has changed. First they showed:

Guo Yan vs. Liu Shiwen even though that's supposed to be at 1:00 China time.

Then they showed Rao Jingwen vs. Ding Ning even though that's supposed to be at 1:45 China time.

Next, they showed Li Xiaoxia vs. Cao Zhen, even though that's 12:15 China time. In essence, the schedule has been reversed, or so it seems.

They probably try to keep the decisive matches for last: at the beginning of the day Guo Yue, Guo Yan, and Li Xiaoxia were all tied at 16-2. Guo and Guo still need to play each other.

Li Xiaoxia won her matches and is 18-2.

Now it's Guo Yue vs Liu Shiwen (live on Shanghai Sports). Later should be Guo Yue vs Guo Yan.

Now Li Xiaoxia in her last match, against Wu Yang.

And now indeed Guo Yue vs Guo Yan, should be the last match of importance. Guo Yue needs a win to tie Li Xiaoxia and take first place.

Women's trials are over. (Are we allowed to say who won, Takaaki?)

Next up is men's trials: just the top 8, single elimination.

Thank you, your  majesty.   And the winner is... Guo Yue! She very narrowly beat Liu Shiwen and Guo Yan, and since she had defeated Li Xiaoxia before, she takes first place and goes right on to Moscow.

Finish:
Guo Yue 19-2
Li Xiaoxia 19-2
Guo Yan 17-4
Liu Shiwen 15-6
Ding Ning 14-7
Zhang Yining 0-0

According to STIGA, Guo Yue plays with the STIGA Ebenholz NCT 5 blade and the STIGA Boost TX rubber on her backhand. Her forehand rubber may be Whale 3.

That's so weird, she hasn't played much recently and she still wont it all...3 tour events and little else last year. Talk about powerful though, it correct that she beat the chopper Wang Xi, a dude who is capable of beating players like Joo, Schlager, Tiago, Chuan, etc, in the Chinese warmup?

Ding did ok, a 2-1 win ratio over the best female players in the world is pretty good for a teenager. Her losses weren't bad ones from what I saw, many 2-3 losses.

That's hillaaaarious. I think Xu Xin will kill him though, Hao Shuai is a left handed controlled looper and we saw how well Xu Xin does against those recently.

On the other hand, Xu Xin is 2 wins and 5 losses against Hao Shuai...that's...weird.

Love Hao Shuai, personal favorite of mine, but he's always been overlooked despite his ability to beat anyone in the world.

Hao Shuai is famous for his ability to beat his own teammates. That's why CHN national team never let him play singles. the consequence is that he knocked his teammates out during prelims and lose to like a european player in the final....LOL....worst case scenario.

Wow, Hao Shuai killed Wang Hao, not even close, 3-0 overwhelming win. I so hope he wins this so he will get a championship of some kind to hold up other than a doubles title.

Wang Hao has always been an underdog when up against Hao Shuai, even when he was in much better shape than now. Hao Shuai has a much underrated short game (best shakehand server for now, according to a nation team coach). If only he could smash better ...LOL

wow, amazing atmosphere at this qualifier. rows of world class coaches, ex-players, players and hopefuls all wearing the same uniform watching them play. must be intimidating.

I don't see anything. Did they change the schedule?

Clearly Hao Shuai won and that was unacceptable so they blacked out the final from tv and will change the results later and Hao Shuai will be "allowed to have a girlfriend" so he has to take personal time away from the team, all in order for him to learn his place in serving the greater good of the country.

They are showing it right now and Hao Shuai keeps losing points by missing the smashes lol.

Liu Guoliang is an amazing commentator :D. He's talking a lot about how they're playing differently than in practice, the problems with their games, their strengths, and the mind games they're playing during service.

Very, very rough recollection of Xu Xin's post-match comments:

It's not that I was confident, but more so that I'm just young and concentrated on attacking my older teammates. Everyone here wanted to play the best. Although my technique not the best, my heart was calmer. I really didn't think about the pressure until the finals. Looking forward to celebrating the Chinese New Year now.

it's not like the olympic games...
i was pretty sure they'd take him even if he hadn't win...
they always have trials and everytime the best 4 (the wang's and the ma's) r there, so it 's usually just a question of who they want on the team..

i.e. they said (correct me if i was wrong) that a player who'd win a pro tour would also qualify 2 the team.but they decide who can participate, so expect 2 c the big 4 at the next few pro tour...

btw, sorry for spelling mistakes..

I think Jonan is being sarcastic when he said "we wouldn't have guessed". I think he is trying to say that XX is going to be on there anyways.Wink Just my own thought.

Congratulation to Xu Xin for his first ticket to Moscow. This young fellow is not afraid to challenge his senior team mates - Ma Long, Hao Shuai, etc. He is only 20 years old. His ultimate goal is to go to 2012 London Olympia.

I like Wang Hao. But if Wang Hao does not quit on seeing his new girlfriend and swallowing potato chips, Xu Xin will be replacing him soon. Beautiful girl is not a welcome factor in the eyes of the coaches of the Chinese TT National Team. They don't want their boys to cast their eyes on beautiful females, only on the ball. Ma Lin and Wang Hao are two classic examples in which girls can cause a lot of distraction and can adversely affect their emotion and performance. I hope Xu Xin can read and speak simple English and he should because the Chinese players are required to take English tutorial lessons now.

For sure.  Players can't be 100% focused on table tennis when they have a girlfriend.

Its just like what the old guy told Rocky when he was training:  "Women weaken legs Rock!"

he is married..this is even worse
seriouslly though, i think it depends if the player can keep his regular hard work at table tennis. there shouldn't be a difference in his playing if he can.

indeed! the most "outrageous" player.

when i think about him i always remember a video of him, i think in some kind of trial for the national team.
after he made a ridicules FH, they show ma long laugh about it and imitate this super shot..

btw, also has great serves, even the best have hard time controlling them.
