Subject: The 2010 Korean Open...
Date Posted: 08/09/2010 at 9:05pm
starts this wednesday (8/11).

none of the chinese will be there. nor will the top 3 japanese (mizutani, yoshida, kishi), but boll and samsonov will be there, so they will be the top 2 seeds on the men's side.  all the koreans of course will show, so maybe at least one of them will make this interesting.  otherwise, it'll be timo and vladi in the final and timo will win.  maybe vladi will go up 3-1 on timo and lose yet again...

on the women's side, feng tianwei and kim kyung ah are the top 2 seeds.  i actually wouldn't be surprised at all if neither one of them made to the final this weekend.

oh, this time the ittf will stream it on itTV.  here's their blurb on that:

"Stay tuned to watch the Korean Open LIVE on the itTV channel "Main". Video On Demand is available from Friday 13th August at 1:00 GMT.

LIVE Streaming starts at 08:30 GMT on Saturday 14th August with the Women's Singles quarter-finals."

1 am GMT friday is 9 pm ET thursday evening and 8:30 am GMT is 4:30 am ET.

same here!!  i actually like to watch the young koreans, too.  but i fear itTV won't show many of their matches.  hopefully, someone over there will record some of the matches that itTV will miss and post videos here.

yeah, the funny thing is, on their front page for the korean open, they put up mizutani's picture, but he's not playing.

i think his super league team has a match this weekend.  but so does oh sang eun's team, but he'll be in korea instead of china...

well, oh is the 4th seed so it will be interesting to see what side of the draw the ittf puts him.

will they put him at the bottom of boll's half of the draw?  if so, then they won't meet till the semis (barring any upsets).

but if they put him at the top of vladi's half of the draw, then he can't meet boll until the final (again, barring any upsets).

so, either way, they cannot meet in the early rounds.

His father is uber cool and plays in the clubs and tourneys just north of Seoul. No matter what the score is, that man ALWAYS has a smile on his face and a good spirit. Would be good to see the young man Jung go deep this tourney.

That is Kenta alright. Even though Kenta wasn't playing great, I must say that I was pretty impressed by the young Korean (Jeong) as well. Very fast and aggressive with pretty solid technique.

Actually it's a little scary to see the high level of play shown by the young Japanese and Korean players at the moment. Looks like Europe has some catching up to do...

Because the Super League plays this weekend. The league will take a break the following week to avoid the conflict with the China Open in Suzhou.

I have feeling that Pro Tour lost it's importance in relation to national leagues.
If you look at men's draw of all Pro Tour tournaments that were played this year, all top players were present only in Qatar Open, German Open and will be present at China open (18 august). I think this is too little for something calls Ittf Pro Tour.
In Kuwait Germans were missing, in Japan and Korea Open Chinese is missing, not to mention other Tournaments that were much worst with only a few top players...

Ittf must find a way to attract more top players into its tournaments (more prize money?), so the tournaments become more attractive for  the spectators. In tennis you have the chance to see Federer and Nadal on the same tournaments many times a year, and, for example,  Timo Boll vs. Ma Long only few times.

I get the distinct feeling that Kenta changed rubbers/blade - he has so many unforced errors that it is painful to watch at times. His backhand is just awful...

i don't think it was a case of matsudaira playing badly at all.  it's just that jeong played him perfectly.  everybody looks bad when they play a better player...

jeong angled him off perfectly on the return of serve and that's why he had to switch to a regular fh serve.

also, i don't see that matsudaira loops very well off the fh for someone at that level of play, so he tends to block on the fh side as much as possible.   if his opponents manage to hit thru the block and he has no choice but to counterloop, then he loses most of the points.

anyhow, i feel like matsudaira is basically a one-trick pony.  it's that serve, the "oji service" as they call it in japan, i believe.  if he can't fool you with that, or (counter-)rip you off the table with his quick backhand or quick blocks, then he basically has nothing else to go to.

also, i think that the novelty of that serve has worn off and, as time progresses, he's gonna lose more and more points off it and he's gonna drop down in the rankings.  i would not be surprised at all if his (twin) brother passes him up on the rankings within a year.  that is, of course, unless he changes tactics...

I don't think that he changed services because of that because matsudaira's first serve was pendulum but he won much more direct points with his usual tomahawk serve

I like Kenta, but I agree with TTNoobie's post that Kenta is overrated. After his close game with Ma Lin, I think people assumed that he's Japan's new rising sun. However, my old Korean coach said immediately after that match that Kenta's days are numbered. He said that after that match the Chinese would watch all his tapes, dissect his techniques and strategies, and inevitably consume him. That seems to be the case... although, I'd argue that it really was probably just a case of Kenta having a really good day at the table and Ma Lin having a bad day. Although I want to like Kenta, very few of his performances outside of that WTTC are terribly impressive.

My two cents.

I don't think he played great only against ma lin, that year he beated smirnov, gardos, karakasevic, chuang, oh sang eun, korbel, keinath, leung chu yan, wang zeng yi, carlos machado and other good players. maybe he is having bad period now or everybody found a way to beat him...

Yup, my thoughts exactly.  It was just his day and it was just the match up of styles.  If Kenta had to move as much as Ma Lin did, he would have passed out on the floor.  Never saw Kenta as a real threat to the Chinese team.  I just like how people are bashing on him now cuz it will bring his reputation back down to where it should be.

kenta matsudaira is a weak player, his results in german league where he won like 2/3 matches out of 15/16 he played and his awfull results in pro tours and other events are simple undeniable! maybe he'll get better, but we havent seen any improvement at all...

Not to be a downer but what has Matsudaria done to prove himself since the worlds last year? He had a very good tournament and beat some good players but what has he accomplished since? As mentioned earlier he had a hard time in the Euro leagues and hasn't come close to winning a major tournament. The problem is his success created a bandwagon and because his serves have been the weirdest and most creative since Schlager lots of people thought he would be the next phenom. All in all I don't find him all that impressive outside of last years worlds and his doubles win at the Japan open.

I don't understand why ittf always showing matches in the first rounds then highest seeded player beating other guy without trying hard.. For me it's much more interesting to watch matches between simmilar level players..

They usually select a table, setup their cameras there and from then on only show matches play on that table (or two). It takes a lot of time and effort to set up everything for the broadcast.

I don't think so, because bwin is covering much more tables

Posted By: Stef
Date Posted: 08/13/2010 at 4:48pm
For this tournament there have been bwin cameras on two tables: 1 and 8. This means that they will normally show the highest seeds in each part of the draw. Some host associations choose to move matches around to get more "attractive" matches on the TV tables, but apparently this isn't the case here :-(

The matches on table 1 from the main draws (mens and womens singles/doubles) are available on demand on the ittv site. All the other matches on table 1 (qualification events and U21 in general) and all the matches on table 8 can only be seen live on bwin.

On the ittv site there will also be live coverage from the singles quarter finals and onwards - usually from an official TV broadcast.

The numbers and placement of the "bwin tables" might vary from tournament to tournament, but I believe this is the typical set up for all the pro tours?

Doesn't the umpire have to give a formal reason for calling a fault? strange...

she really looked bad - she was literally crying, poor thing...

That's because there were no matches being shown when you tuned in. The channel is working now, though.

Presently they are showing Timo Boll vs. Joo Se Hyuk - great match, pretty close in points, but Timo is trailing 0-2 in games.

Try shutting down all browser windows and restarting.

If that doesn't work restart your computer,

If that doesn't do it then install Adobe player again.

Wow, Joo has been playing unbelievably well - his chops were so consistent and loaded with spin and he was really aggressive in attacking. Must be home country advantage.

I almost died reading about Joo and Boll. It must be real exciting cos you don' t often see Boll lose so badly.

You bet!

Someone did mention that he downloaded some of the games off bwin the net gambling site.

Now how did ITTF get involved with Bwin ???? Is ITTF for sports betting??? For gambling?

Don't be surprised one of these days there will be cries of "FIX" in table tennis tournaments.

Vladimir just owned Oh, great match to watch. That was a good showing of how dangerous Oh is when you get int BH to BH play with him. Vladimir didn't win many points when he got into those situations but played brilliantly all in all.

I must admit I never followed Shen Yanfei until today.

Her close table control and attack succeeded in pushing Feng Tienwei away from the table, the key to Shen's win.

Shen was awesome in an awesome match.

She has made a fan of me.

BTW her forehand makes a loud sound. Does anyone know what rubber she uses?

i think she's playing with pips on the fh and maybe hardbat, as well.  she used to play doubles with GAO JUN who's also a pips-out hardbat player.

also, correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't remember seeing her ever win a pro tour event before in singles.  this is probably the first time...

Hi there,

Just for the record, Se Hyuk is his first name (consdered by Koreans to be one single entity, not first name + middle name of sort. So it is improper to call him Se or Hyuk) and Ju is his last name.   Koreans put their last name before the first name .... i mean it to be a joke of course ...  Ju (Kim, Lee, Park, Choi, etc mostly single syllable) is the family name (equivalent of our "last name") is called first before his personal name ( // our "first name") in the Korean order.  In the process of "westernization" over the past century, Koreans finally learned to put their first names first .... again this is a joke folks ... thus Sehyuk Ju or Se Hyuk Ju (because in Korean writing, Se and Hyuk form separate "characters").

But nowadays a trend is set to call a person the way he or she is called in his or her native way  Thus Ju Se Hyuk  Lee Myung Bak (S. Korean president) Ban Ki-Moon (current UN Secretary)  etc.  Kim Yuna (yun-ah) the Oympic figure skating queen, was long recognized as Yuna Kim, Yun-A Kim, etc.  BTW, Koreans are not used to be refered to by their last name only  "Kim says ....",  "Lee went..". these definately sound weird to a native Korean ear. Either first name ("Se Hyuk played brilliantly.") or full name ("Ju Se Hyuk is an excellent defense player") sound proper.

No offense to the person quoted.... just to help at least some of you to understand how it works.
