Looks like an all chinese tournament, but there is hope for the Europeans: Timo Boll also plays.
Wang Liqin will defend the title, Zhang jike is Runner-up.

Well, probably the strongest tournament of this year apart from the WC, and surely stronger then next Olympics LOL. I think that Timo Boll and the rest of Chinese have pretty well chances to win this because Chen Qi isn't present.

The matches with Li Hu should be very interesting. Singapore recently attracted around five or six new players from China. Li Hu (22) and Zhan Jian (28) are the two most promising players. Both were former national team members and won junior championships. The other new players are all under 20 and some are as young as 15.

I watched Li Hu's matches today, he is pretty far away from prime time. Maybe it is just qualification, but the power, intensity and skill level are simply not there...compared with top 20 of course. Let's see if he will surprise in the next round, I highly doubt it.

WLQ's draw is very unfortunate.. he will have to go trough XX (Round of 16), WH (Quarter), and Ma Long (Semi), only to get to the final. Where other favourites like Ma Lin, Zhang Jike, or Timo Boll will wait.. Personally IMO, WLQ will last until the quarter final. Though I do hope he hits form to win it.
Interesting also to see that Ma Lin can meet Timo in the quarter. If that happens, we'll see whether Ma's lost at their recent match is a fluke.. Wink

wow... Chuang lost, and Suss lost to Kuzmin (unexpected for me, really), and Gardos was just demolished 4-0 by Chan Kazuhiro.

Too bad Zhan Jian had to play Mizutani in the very first round - that must have been quite a match...

Also not sure if anyone noticed before, I didn't when scouring the groups, but a Canadian made it to the main draw, Eugene Wang, lost to Kenta 4-0 though... that's hillarious though, he only had to win 1 match to make it to the draw, the other guy in his 3 man group dropped out.

i'm not surprised by chuang losing, he plays in france and he regularly loses to lower players, as he did back when he was playing in germany.

as for suess, he's not playing at a 100%, so i'm not surprised at that one either.

the big surprise for me was chan blanking gardos.  i did think chan had a good chance to upset gardos, but i was thinking it would go the full 7 games.

also, though i figured mizutani was gonna win in the end, i was expecting zhan to give him more of a game and was suprised at the relative ease mizutani had against him.

also, looking at the draw, it looks like we're headed towards a boll-ma lin quarterfinal, barring any upsets.  i can't wait!!

That Canadian Zhen (Eugene) Wang is one of the top North American players, >2700 USATT rated.  He went 11-0 in the Baltimore Teams tournament in November 2010, winning 10 of those 11 matches 3-0 against 2500-2700 rated players.  He won the 11th match 3-1.  He has a seriously good game.  Just goes to show how good someone in ITTF top 40 like Kenta is.

Yeah, and if you looked deeper, it's because in his one US open he played in 2002, when he was19, he went 1-1 and lost to Chu Yan Leung.

USATT ratings system is bunk and seems to only work between about 1900-2500 with some degree of "accuracy". And the most accurate US ratings seem to between 2000-2200. For judging player strength above 2500 or below 1900, the whole system seems wildly inaccurate.

And while I can't be certain about judging levels too far above my own, I am 100% certain that it barely functions at all from 800-1600, (if you look at the number of 200-400 point upsets that regularly occur in that range). I'm sure you try and could argue that the lack of accuracy in the lower ranges is is because of "developing players" and "stylistic upsets", but the truth of the matter is that the system simply does not track playing strength well. Especially if time between tournaments has elapsed.

It's almost as horrible as the one that our friendly neighbors to the North use :)

The Chinese team specially trained Li Ping as a 'European' player. He use European rubber and loops the Euro way. He is the 'European' practice partner for the Chinese National Team.
The people back in China have an opinion that European rubbers are inferior compared to Chinese hard and tacky rubbers :))

Another player specifically trained to mimic a rival is Wang Jian Jun, a CPen player turned Jpen to mimic Ryu Seung Min. You can almost see Ryu's twin brother when he plays. He once beat WLQ in a local tournament playing JPen, so he's no average player.
I think He already turn back to CPen now, probably the Chinese aren't feeling threatened by JPen-ers these days...

I wonder how good he has to be or who he has to beat in order for them to see his and theirs (Europeans) isnt inferior, along with their equipment, I mean he beat Ma Long, Chen Qi, and Wang Hao last year, but barely gets to compete in anything.

Anyway, I think we had the same discussion like 9 months ago during the Chinese trials about him, his equipment, his role, etc.

as far as rating the high-ranked foreign players, i agree with what you say, though i don't think it has to do with the system, per se, but with a lack of desire on the part of USATT to put those top foreigners too high above our own.  also, it looks to me like they don't want to rate anybody over 3000.

anyhow, if you look you'll see that the highest USATT rating goes to kong linghui, and then, wang liqin and ma lin and they're rated less than 200 pts. over the top US players.  now, that's just a big joke, cuz there's no way that fan and lupi are that close to them, neither now, nor way back then when kong and co. last played here.

as far as the 800-1600 range, i wouldn't know, cuz i have been that low for nearly a decade now, but as best as i can see, for those low players, since they don't have the fundamentals, matchups are key.  cuz, at that level, you can lose to somebody 200 pts. below you, but beat somebody 200 pts. above just cuz you have one shot or one serve that they can't handle.

or just because you "cho" louder than they do in between points--yep, it's that easy...

I highly doubt RSM will get past Boll, and if he did, I think he'll be in trouble playing a player with a strong BH, ZJK..

Zhang Jike, the tennis Gods are with him, talk about relaxing too much and carrying the confidence of a victory before it is accomplished, not a good thing.

Great match between Ma and Joo.  If it went to a 7th game I would have bet on Joo.

I could be wrong, but I don't think anybody will be able to stop Ma Long from winning this tournament, He is just the best player in the world right now..

Come on. Let's be honest. Persson was good at his time but he already passed the torch to a younger generation. He does not belong any more. This is edited clip but if you watch the whole game, you know what I mean.

Yea, I watched the game on ittf and it did not look good at all. The highlights on youtube were alright though.

Thumbs Down

Who has he passed the torch to? He's going deeper into tournaments than any other player from Sweden. Everyone knows Persson is past his prime. But he's still playing well. Better than anyone else from Sweden at the moment.

very good point!!  "who has he passed the torch to?"

he and waldner, as old and broken down as they are, are still CURRENTLY the top swedes!!

there's absolutely nobody in sweden at the moment to pass the torch to!!!

I meant they "passed the torch to a younger generation" as a whole, not necessarily to Swedes. True, he is still one of the best Swedes, but he does not belong to that top class. It's a whole new generation now.

I cringe everytime I read Ian Marshalls write ups on ittf.com,  this time it's Timo Boll against the invading Asian hordes!!!!ShockedAngry
http://ittf.com/_front_page/ittf_full_story1.asp?ID=23239&Competition_ID=2012&

If table tennis got wide media coverage, Ian Marshall would've lost his job ages ago.

"The Lone Ranger rides again; this time in the Middle East, to be precise in Qatar.

Furthermore, he has with him his trusted scout “Rossi” alongside, as he faces foes from the east in an effort to stop the invaders plundering the spoils
...

However, he is alone, very much alone; all the remaining competitors are from the region of the world once ruled by the ruthless Ghengis Khan. Reputedly he took no prisoners and neither did the modern days stars of Chinese table tennis on the penultimate day of action in Doha

Success for German but then the Chinese juggernaut rolled into action."

Really dude, really? Comparing the Chinese to the Mongolians? Check your freakin history book and world map, Ghengis Khan was a Mongolian, from Mongolia...which is a different country than China, different people, who were mortal enemies for centuries...you analogy has failed. It was the Chinese who held out the Mongolians...

Agreed, the reference to the Mongol hordes and invasion is an especially poor choice of words. He seems nice enough as a commentator, but his writing has always been rather unprofessional.

what??  you gotta be kiddin!!  like, who won the last swedish nat'ls?

in sweden, after all this time, it's still persson, waldner and lundqvist, but waldi is in pretty bad shape now, so it's really just persson and lundqvist and, oh, i forgot gerell (easy to forget).  svensson is there, too, but he's just not that good, period.  i don't see him EVER breaking into the top-50.

and though gerell is currently in the top-50--i don't see him staying there for much longer.  in fact, i wouldn't be surprised at all if, by the end of this year, persson is the only swede in the top-50.
