In all fairness, this is CNT junior team, and a pity that "rest of the worlds" best is not here.
I would love to see CNT junior team VS rest of the world. It is like seeing a young Ma Lin vs the world champ JO Waldner, one has youth, the other has experience.

Yes, but that is his own fault. It is ridiculous that the player of his level cannot advance out of the qualification group at such a low-level ProTour tournament.

Agreed, but unfortunately, his loss isn't posted so we can only speculate as to what happened. He destroyed his opponent in the match he won.

Haven't seen this player, Zhou Yu, played in the international arena before.
Came out of nowhere, Zhou Yu beat the #2 seed (WR #37) Gacina Andrej 4 -- 0.
So, there are some unknown Chinese players not in the ITTF world top 100 but their playing skill is right up there. Oh, btw, just found out that Zhou Yu is very young.

Zhou Yu is one of the future talent of China. Have been in CNT B team for some time and appearing more in the A team line up - ie Olympic close trainings as practice partners.
These are the future of CNT - so for the ones that think Ma Long and ZJK will last forever or win world titles for the next 8 years, please reconsider, it is not as easy as after these groups of Zhou Yu, Fang Bo, Yang An, Shang Kun etc, in 2 years you will have another "list" of possible champions

Yeah, but somehow the best Chinese players either don't go to Junior events or don't perform well at they youth, tend to peak (males) after 20 yrs old to 22yrs old or so. Its like a super high jump from junior to mens in a matter of a few years. Some how the "Euro" juniors are not jumping that easily - I wonder why is the case.....

Tomorrow, Muramatsu Yuto will play Zhou Yu. Should be an interesting match.
Muramatsu Yuto: The impressive young Japanese defensive player.
Zhou Yu: The young Chinese player (an attacker) who just beat #2 seed (4:0).
(What is Muramatsu's backhand rubber, LP? He gives attackers lots of headache.)
Hard to predict who is going to win.

I think you have it backwards. What really happens is that the youngsters are good, but the national team is full, so they wait their turn. Most of them play the junior events if they do when they are much younger than the competition. Koki Niwa could likely be a has-been if he was on the Chinese national team.

Yuto has a big advantage of experience in this, as it is Zhou Yu's first ever Pro Tour. Zhou is the better player though, I see him winning by 4-2 or 4-1 despite the nervousness.

Skachkov lost to Fang Bo 1-4. He had 4 (!) setpoints in the 5th, lost them all and lost the set and match. Too bad.
So now it is
Xu Xin vs Fang Bo Mikhail Paykov vs Zhou Yu
Final is going to be: Xu Xin vs Zhou Yu, I am pretty sure...

Thanks Janus. Yan An has a nice style, two winged all-rounder, very quick on his feet, doesn't play this super-safe game you see with some players, will be fun to follow him. Quite compact forehand swings there. Almost looks like a Japanese player with more power.

Xu Xin....great player....but....needs to cut down on the showboating. He started goofing off from the first round all the way thru to the finals. Almost cost him in the finals.....losing the 6th set and putting unnecessary pressure on himself in order to close out the match.

Zhou also missed shots that he could have made so I think it goes both ways. It took Zhou two games to realize that he had to play to a level he probably had never played to, but as it got winnable, his poise was remarkable. I'm sure if Zhou and Xu had hit before the match for 2 hours, the result would have been a bit different and not necessarily in Xu's favor because Xu is more familiar with shakehanders that Zhou is with RPB.

Zhou choked to lose the last game with substandard play.
Xu is not as good in rallies as the best Chinese; he lost to Liqin this way. He leaves to table too soon and gets too far from the table. His arrogance allows him to mess about rather than focus on proper play. These are real obsatacles for this big talent.

Look how far he comes over the ball when he puts it away, Xu xin usually has no problem returning loops from far away but zhou yu's sidespin loops were dynamite. I thought Fang Bo was the future but if Zhou steps up his backhand to be more consistent and less wristy, I think we have a zhang jike with a better forehand

Both Xu Xin and Zhou Yu signed the scorecard with their right hands. I'm pretty sure I saw Hao Shuai do the same thing a couple weeks ago. I know Jun Mizutani is really right-handed too. What's with making everyone learn table tennis with their off hands? Does coming in from the left side really gain you that much advantage?
I just read that no left-handed Chinese player has won the olympics or a world championship. What about from other countries? Does anyone know?
I suppose they could all be ambidextrous....right?

In writing Chinese, it is easier to write with the right hand. It is common that left handers learn to write with the right. But other than that - Chop sticks, table tennis racket etc is all with the left.
Same with Wang Nan too. And she won the olympics/world champs

Stellan Bengsston is the only lefty to win the world's I am aware of.
Lefties play right handers all the time, generally, while righties seldom play lefties. So lefties are more accustomed to playing righties, giving lefties some advantage.
The could be ambi, or they might lefties forced to learn to write with their right hand.

====================================
I think in China & Japan, when a left-handed child learns how to write, the parents force the child to use the right hand. That was the situation back then.
In the western countries, parents just let the child use whichever hand the child prefers to use to write. Parents in the western countries just don't force the left-handed child to use right hand to write.

I don't think those guys were right-handed but trained to use left hand to play TT - they were left-handed to begin with.

Correct, and also as I said above, it is easier to write with the right hand - base on how the characters are formed.
A lefty that can write with a right is actually very cool. Left hand holds an eraser, the right hand a pencil. I thought that was quite cool lol I also know one person that can use chopsticks with both hands

Interesting, thanks for the cultural enlightenment on right hand writing and the info on champion lefties.
I heard an announcer once say Jun Mizutani was really right handed and forced to play table tennis with his left. The Olympics page corroborates that story. I wonder if he's unique in that regard.

I don't know much about Jun Mizutani - sorry.
However I feel for racket sport - forcing may be indeed more difficlut than oppose to a sport that uses both hands - ie Baseball, basketball, Cricket etc

There are many good Chinese teenagers like Lin, Song Hongyuan and others. ;) But I can still be impressed by a 16 year old defender.

Anyone could find the direct links, its easy:
When you "Quote" the post with the embedded videos you could see the "Youtube video identities" of all the embedded videos, so when I quoted http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=53368&PID=657505&title=2012-ittf-world-tour-koltsovo-russia-open-videos#657505 - that post I found:

and
UlNlRIB-RSU (for the 2nd video)
Now, the general form of a youtube video address is like this:

my former coach told me that lefties are taken seriuosly in china, in mid 90's there was a chinese lefty player that use to beat 60% of the matches to kong and liu and was 96 national champion but never was in the 1st team

Yes, it's strange to think about how there have been many high quality players we never heard about, since they were just training partners.
These days we have CCTV online streams, so I think we can see all of the top quality Chinese players now in the CTTSL and national championships.

I looked it up, the 1996 national champion is lefty, named Zhang Yong, don't know if that is the same person who coached Singapore women's team with Liu Guodong.

Stellan Bengtsson of Sweden, Seiji Ono of Japan and J-P Gatien of France were World men's champions in 1971, 1979 and 1993 respectively, with the late Anton Stipancic of Yugoslavia the runner-up in 1975. Europe has been dominated recently by Germany's Timo Boll, who has five European titles, and in the past Mikael Appelgren of Sweden won three Euro titles in 1982, 1988 and 1990. Michael Maze was 2009 European Champion as well.
Ding Ning, the current world women's champion, is a leftie, as is the 2007 winner Guo Yue. Of course the great Wang Nan, a Chinese like Ding and Guo, dominated world table tennis with back to back world titles in 1999, 2001 and 2003 and was 2000 Olympic champion as well.
I'm not sure if this is an all inclusive list but it should help.

Chen Jing, a leftie, won the gold medal in the 1988 Olympics for China, preceding Wang Nan's period of dominance which included an Olympic gold medal and three World singles titles.
