I actually liked how Samsonov played vs Xu Xin. Very good game and very clever execution. If only he could be a little faster and more powerful - but alas that time is past.

Since Ma Long lost, is he out of the tournament?
THe first rounds are round robin, so he is not out yet. If he loses his third match though, I'm pretty sure he will be out (Im assuming they take the top 2 from each group).

IMHO, Samsonov intentionally varied the pace and ball placement in order to disrupt Xu Xin's rhythm. All those short and slow blocks, etc The very first set was unbelievable - all rallies seemed so slow, and only later I figured that was Samsonov's plan all along.
I wonder if the same strategy would have worked against Ma Long had Samsonov overcome Timo Boll.

Xu Xin was obviously flat. He seemed unmotivated, mentally out to lunch. Not pumped up at all.
It's reasonable to assume this was from the shellacking he got from Ma Long. Maybe he didn't feel like playing at all.
If Xu Xin was pumped, it simply wouldn't matter what Samsonov does.
P.S. Keep thefull match short form videos coming, a real timesaver!

i agree that xu xin was mentally out of it, but i still think that samsonov really catered his game to xu xin's to make him uncomfortable, it was just right to push xu xin's already out of it mental state into a frustrated state, great strategy
+1 to the short form, great work everyone, thanks!

Samsonov just played great. He can do that. Remember he gave Zhang Jike a real tough match in the Olympics.

I agree. Regardless of the mood Xu was in, he'd have had a hard time with Vladi in the 3rd place match. Vladi played well in London and throughout the tournament in Liverpool. In addition to the variation and control others mentioned in this thread, his backhand topspin and especially the counter topspin were both doing a lot of damage.
Tactically, it's a good match-up when a leftie faces a righthanded with a great backhand. In the eighties into the nineties, Grubba gave Gatien a lot of trouble for the same reason.
