Hi everybody,

after a 15-years-break i restarted playing table-tennis two years ago. Since that time i have always been looking for my "best-fiting" personal equipment and was testing out many blades. Now I finally ended in collecting Butterfly Blades. I am not specified at collecting a single handle type or only collect just blades in unused or mint condition. My collection is by far not the biggest if i take a look at some other members here...but...
a few blades finally ended up at my home that`s why I want to show some pictures of my woodies and hope you have fun by watching them....
Here a videolink how Butterfly blades are born:

1. Butterfly Swedish Style

Weight: 96 Gramms Sized: 16,1/15,5cm
Not a light blade, regarding its age it is not really a "slow" blade

2. Butterfly Börzsey

Weight: 92 Gramms Sized: 16,0/15,4cm
5-ply-hinoki-wood. I think it was made in the year 1975.

3. Butterfly Surbek (European Champion)

Weight: 101 Gramms Sized:15,9/14,7cm
This Blade is a Tribute to the famous Yugoslavian Player Dragutin Surbek (The Worker) who was very successful in doubles together with his partner Anton Stipancic (The Genius), both teamed up successfully at doubles in 1979 in Pjöngjang and won the title. Surbek was a real "Training Animal" he broke in the Training hall several times at night to Train and went really mad if he was not able to play tt every day....

4. Butterfly Gergely

Weight: 101 Gramms Sized:15,9/14,7cm
5-ply-wood with straightened and flatened Lense

5. Butterfly Stipancic-H
Weight: 99 Gramms Sized: 16,0/15,1cm
5-ply-wood, not a slow one
Unlike Surbek Stipancic did not like to train very much....but he had a good excuse for it....he was looking for the female Players

I do not really know for sure but i think the holes were made to reduce the weight of the handle and could have also been a reason for reducing sweat. Maybe the blade was also lacking weight to the blades head, this could have also been a reason for the amazing style of the handle. Stigas "Ehrlich" handle seems to be very similar to the Swedish Style.

7. Butterfly Jonyer-H

Weight: 96 Gramms Sized: 16,3/15,4cm

Model Name is refering to Hungarian Player István Jonyer, Worldchampion in 1975 in Calcutta. He was also very sucessful in doubles with Tibor Klampár and Gábor Gergely. In the 1970ies the Hungarian Team had such great Players, most of them were using the classic Butterfly rubber
Sriver D12 and a strange glue smell was wobbering through the air coming out from the changing rooms of the hungarian players.......
The Srivers were also attached when i received this blade, it was very hard to get them off after being glued on the old blades for a few decades...

The feel of the old Jonyer-H FL was incredible. Sadly mine was broken decades ago. A great blade in every sense.

8. Butterfly English Style

Weight: 95 Gramms Sized: 17,3/15,3cm
with old (german/latin/Roman) font and nailed metal tag.
If you look at the dimension of the blade, the 95 gramms are still
acceptable. Similar to the Butterfly New Leather.

Since we reached the "Style" Blades we can go on....

9. Butterfly Kenny Style

Weight:88 Gramms Sized:15,7/15,2cm
5-Ply-basswood
A real classic blade. For todays play it is slow, but it has much control. The handle sealing causes much sweat. I think it is the reason why many handles of the kenny style blades lost the Color over the years and the prints have left

10. Butterfly Firehand Style

Weight:87 Gramms Sized:16,0/15,4cm
the blade is from the mid-1970ies, 5ply-all-wood with hinoki on top,
This blade is a little bit faster than the Kenny, i think speed rating should be off-, very good for topspin Play

11. Butterfly Phoralek HS

Weight:86 Gramms Sized:16,5/15,4cm
This 5-ply-wood is based on the same blade construction than the Jonyer-H. Erich Pohoralek from Suisse gave order to Butterfly to produce these blades to compete against the Stiga Alser since other models like Secretin/Kenny Style were made with basswood and the handle of Jonyer-H was very small.. So the blades head of the Pohoralek HS (Hinoki-Shake) was also modified and the handle got bigger. Blade speed is OFF-

12. Butterfly Pohoralek CBS

Weight:77 Sized:16,4/15,5cm
5-ply-wood
The second model from the series Pohoralek ordered at Butterfly.
Despite the blade size a very light blade with much control.
Compared to the HS, the CBS is the slower blade, specially designed for allround play.
Many Players still use it today for defensive play, the CBS has still enough offensive potential.
In combination with OX-rubbers long pips underspin goes very well, especially from the half distance it is very easy to cut down the arriving topspins....

13. Butterfly Secretin

Weight:80Gramms Sized:15,8/15,3cm

Another classic allround blade with 5-ply-basswood veneers.

Jaques Secretin won the European title 1976 in Prague with his defensive playing style.

At the world championships he was not very sucessfull, best result was reaching the quaterfinal

in singles 1973 in Sarajevo.

Later he was doing some nice tt-shows in Europe with his partner Vincent Purkart...

14. Butterfly Phalanx

Weight: 87 Gramms Sized:15,9/15,0cm

with old metal tag and no font on blades head

This Butterfly model got famous since one of the best Allround players Andrej Grubba was using it a very long time. Fast and Light for sharp swings, which adds more power. Ranked in the midfield of the blade speed range it was much faster than Elegance, Agnes Simon,Surbek, Topspin or Kucharski model. Faster models in general were the first Tamca5000 models and only a few blades with 5-ply-hinocki veneers... The Phalanx is said to be the ancestor of the Grubba Allround, Grubba Pro and Grubba Variant 5-ply-woods that were introduced to the market when the first Phalanx got slowly discontinued but i am not sure since Phalanx and Grubba series had different speed and were sold at the same time. Here the Version from 1986 with the white-brownish divided handle, later Version had the full Brown handles.

If i look at the condition of the top veneer of my Phalanx i would say that ít never had a print and i never saw any Picture of a Phalanx that had font on the head as well.

15. Butterfly Desmond Douglas Pro

Weight: 83 Gramms Sized: 16,0/14,8cm

Another blast from the past. 5-ply-wood.

Des Douglas and Alan Cook had a 170 turn rally within one minute at Britisch Championships 1986

in Newcastle. I think this record is still valid.

Time to move a little bit forward... Since we just had the Des Douglas we should not forget the other player...

16. Butterfly Alan Cooke

Weight:  92 Gramms Sized: 15,3/14,8cm

With old metal tag and old font on the straightened and flatened lense it must have been produced in end of 1991/beginn of 1992 when using the Roman font in production was slowly stopped due to being replaced by the new font. The old font print on blades head was replaced very fast but the old font lenses were still used in production until the stocks were exhausted. I think this blade is one of the best looking ones Butterfly has ever produced regarding its style and color selection. Cooke was 6 times British champion, best international result was reaching the round of the last 16 at the World Championships 1987 in New Delhi.

Nice blade! I had Butterfly Agnes Simon with the same looking. It is not hinoki, but abachi and koto.

18. Butterfly Klampar

Weight:68 Gramms Sized: 16,5/15,5cm
Came with old tag and was available in AN/FL/ST and CO handle. The top ply of the Klampar is very sensitive, not a good blade for Klampars Invention of fresh-glueing
The Blade is not stiff but has soft reaction to supply Topspins. The head is larger than the standard bat and yet lighter.
Klampar was a real rebel, he got banned several times by the hungarian association for leaving the Players camp without permission when he was visiting the western european countries due to tournaments....

it is a very fantastic collection

maybe different in europe?  but i thought the firehand had a dark wooden handle with a silver name badge with black lettering?  the one pictured here was black lacquered like the kenny model

also, anybody remember the slower version gergely racket with the three grooves on one side of the handle?

also, anybody remember the slower version gergely racket with the three grooves on one side of the handle?

:)

There is a "Firehand Style" and two Versions of "Firehand"....
One of These was only made for US market..
Maybe you will see them soon...

Gergely if i remember right there was one with metallic sign on top of the handle, the oldest one, the one from my post, both were without Carbon, the Gergely Tamca5000er without font on head and lager head (1. Version) Gergely Tamca 5000er Modell with Font on blades head, the Gergely 21 and the Gergely Alpha...

as i recall, the only gergely racket i knew of, before the carbon etc.

was like medium speed....probably 5 ply, possibly off- and had a flared handle that was thin - and it had 3 grooves lengthwise up the entire length of the handle

19. Butterfly Elegance

Weight: 79 Gramms Sized: 15,4/15,0cm
With old font on blades head and (lost)old metal tag, straightened and flatened lense.
Blades from the Elegance Series (Dvoracek, Agnes Simon and Dr Simon and Kucharski) were the lightest blades in the Butterfyll range, the blades heads were little smaller than the regular ones. Speed was even slower than the "Basswood" Series. Made for allround players supplying the best control.

Allround Blade from the 1980ies with red sticker, produced only with AN and FL handle. The Tempest was officially sold in EU at 18€/25$. That were really nice prices in the past...

Rare Allround Blade from the eighties with old font and old metal tag.

Grandis belongs to the allround range like the later Grubba All+ model.

Priced at 20€/27$ when officially sold in EU. Again an example for nice prices in the past.

Blade was only available with AN and FL handle

23. Butterfly Klampar-H

Weight: 75Gramms Sized:     15,9/14,8cm
Another blade with old font on blades head and flatened and straightened lense and old metal tag. The hinocki veneers give an excellent touch and are providing a great Feeling. A very good blade for two winged topspin play...still used by many players today.

Regarding Klampar I remember many funny stories about him:
Once he wanted not to Train since he prefered to visit his girlfriend. When he asked Bercik if he was okay with his leaving he was not allowed. Klampar got really angry and broke his blade. Then he was claiming he had nothing to play with now.
Berzcik told him he was right, but he gets a punishment and has to run 5 times around the stadium...Klampar did..later Berzcic found his car with deflated tires and every window was covered with thick layers of pastries...Berzcik went real mad when he saw it....

Another one is about a tournament a british collector had brought a stiga ehrlich blade for exposition..
Klampar saw it and felt in love with the Stiga...he offered much money to the collector and highered the amount two times but his offers were all rejected...the collecter did not want to sell the blade, not even to Klampar. Late at night the security got an intruder alert from the
hall were the blade was exposed...they found Klampar holding the Stiga Ehrlich already in his hands...
It seems Klampar was a person that did not really accept a "no", a real enfant terrible...

24. Butterfly Grubba Pro
Weight: 84 Gramms Sized: 16,7/15,6
Comes with old font and straightened and flatened lense and black tag. Blade was made at the time of the font shift end of 1991/beginn of 1992. This blade is said to be the replacement model for the discontinued Phalanx.
Grubba was one of the best allround Players ever, unfortunatly he was playing at the era of Waldner and Appelgren so he once said he will not be remembered much since he always reaching the third or fourth places like 1989 in Dortmund, his biggest international sucess reaching the semi-finals there. Grubba was a very popular Player since his playing skills delighted the crowds. He was famous for switching the playing Hand during the points, later he joined the table Tennis Show of Secretin.
Since he died very young the table tennis training camp in Danzig was named to honor him after his death..

25. Butterfly Powerdrive (Old Version)

Weight: 96 Gramms Sized: 15,9/15,3cm
Here a really nice Butterfly Powerdrive first version model, produced in 1987/1988. Comes with old tag and without lense. For todays play it is a little too slow, regarding its Speed i would add it to the allround section.

BTY Power Drive was the blade for many north American players in the 70's and 80's. Heavy, fast and big sweet spot. I disagree it would be Allround by todays standard. It is fast to very fast with tensors. Juic Nebula is almost a twin to Power Drive for those that can't find original Power Drive.

This particular version of the power drive is my main blade and the speed is definitely off- to off. It has a unique feel, It's very stiff but soft due to the hinoki outerplies.

26. Butterfly Powerdrive

Weight: 99 Gramms Sized: 15,6/15,0cm
Here the little newer version of the old Butterfly Powerdrive.
The blade has straightened and flatened lense and old tag, but already new font on blades head.
The handle has been sanded for comfortable thumb Position. Butterfly did this with a few models,
later they stopped it. I think it was made around 1992-1994.
Compared with the older Version this Powerdrive is a little bit faster and straighter, they were sold at 25€/33$

i guess a left hander could use it - with the logo on the bh side

27. Butterfly Kenny Pro

Weight: 92 Gramms Sized: 16,0/15,2cm
Here a nice Kenny Pro ST with flatened and straightened lense, no serial, no old tag, with new font
on blades head. I already saw ones with old font on head and lense, so i guess it was made in the late eighties and still produced until the mid-nineties.  A slow 5-ply blade with lots of control and basswood outer plies and medium soft feel. Probably the follower of the Kenny Style...I think it is best suited for counter play.

28. Butterfly Firehand

Weight: 75 Gramms Sized: 15,5/14,9cm
Comes with straightened and flatened lense and old metal tag, with old font on blades head and thumb sanding. A very rare blade and hard to get especially with ST handle, compared with the Primo Off- the Firehand is thinner and more elastic so it is better suited for topspin play than the Primo. This version of the Firehand must have been produced in the late 1980ies....Still very popular among the german Players.

Weight: 92 Gramms Sized: 15,4/15,0cm
It has neither silver nor old tag. Here the follower of the old Firehand. Surprisingly it was rated OFF+, and was made for the US Market. This version has nothing in common with its famous ancestor that was really an excellent blade. A 5-ply-wood with limba outer plies and ayous inner plies and super core system (carbon). The Blade was one of the fastest blades at the butterfly range end of the 1990ies.

Weight: 79Gramms Sized: 15,7/15,4cm
Here the allround version, the Batorfi Intellect Dohjo All+, 5-ply-wood,
produced for the hungarian player Csilla Batorfi that won several European Championship titles. Later she became head coach of the italian national Team. There was another version published which is faster, rated OFF-. I think the Batorfi-blades were produced in 1989, at least that year is stated at their lenses. There were not many pieces made, it must have been a tiny series...

Weight: 94 Gramms Sized: 15,6/14,9cm
Again a Powerdrive, coming here with old font on blades head, must have been made before the end of 1991. With old tag and straightened and flatened lense.
Blade composition should be:
Hinoki/Rosewood/Abachi/Rosewood/Hinoki
Available in ST, FL and AN.

Weight: 87 Gramms Sized:15,3/14,9cm
With old font on straightened and flatened lense and blades head, no serial and without old tag.
If the Power7 is lacking power for your play, try the Power9. Its blade dimensions are small, but with standart butterfly size i guess the Power9 would have been become too heavy. Not only Stiga was able to produce nice 9-ply-woods in the past... The Power-9 was only produced with FL Handle. I think it was made with 5 plies Abachi, 2 plies Limba and 2 plies of Rosewood.

33. Butterfly Spinshot
Weight: 83 Gramms Sized: 15,5/14,9cm
One of the best 5-ply-wood ever made for topspin play the Spinshot is still very popular and famous among the German Players. Composition should be: Limba-Abachi-Limba-Abachi-Limba.
It is a pity that this model was discontinued without a follower-model to replace itDisapprove.
This one has straightened and flatended lense and no black tag. I do not think the Spinshots ever had the old tags attached. Other pieces of the Spinshot i saw until today had the new font printed on the head.

Maybe the blade is not very popular because many Players that used it as their main blade lost their matches?LOL I already knew that old post at mytt about it, but does not help much regarding the history of that model. In French "to lose" is "perdre" also similar to Spanish since bot languages have latin origin. I once asked Butterfly Central in Europe about the Perdir, but they also "lost" their knowledge about it Wink

36. Grubba All+
Weight: 96 Gramms Sized: 15,3/15,0cm
Here an old Version of the Grubba All+ with straightened and flatened old font lense, black tag and new font on handle. It was produced in 05/1992. The Grubba All+ is one of the most sold blades in the allround section, with much control and soft Feeling the blade was often recommanded for beginners with Sriver Rubbers. It is not fast, but is providing very much control. When I was a kid the Grubba All+ was the first blade i ever had and was released at about the same time the Nittaku Magic  OFF/Solution blades were also introduced.. If i remember right there were a lots of good Players in Europe in These years like Waldner, Persson, Saive, Gatien, Roßkopf, Primorac and of course Grubba..
The blade was not in a good shape when i bought it, but it was very good repaired in the south-west Region of GermanyWink. Many Thanks again for the really fantastic work....Clap

Weight: 88 Gramms Sized: 15,3/15,1cm
7-ply-wood, with old tag.
A very good blade for fast and hard strokes, quick topspin and counter attacks. Rated as Off+ it is a very hard and stiff blade but is still providing a good control and Feeling. Older Versions had the old font on blades head and straightened and flatened lense. Only produced with FL handle. Later i was able to catch the old font Version as well.

40. Butterfly Clearfield

Weight: 92 Gramms Sized: 15,7/15,2cm
a 7-ply-woodwith Koto Outers coming with old tag was released in 1992. The Clearfield is a very stiff blade and hard blade. Chen Jing that won the Olympic Games 1988 in Seoul was using the Clearfield for close to the table Play. Later she was joining Lübeck to Play in the German League. I do not think it is a good blade for loopers, but very good Players seem to be able to handle the Clearfield even for Looping...for most Players it is just a good blade for playing strokes with short pips...
Blade Composition is: Koto-Koto-Abachi-Abachi-Abachi-Koto-Koto

Looking at the lines on the handle the style is similar to a T5000er blade that has also some lines and a black lense... I think Zhu Yuling was using it in the final of Kuwait open 2014.The flared handle of the Clearfield is thicker than the Standard with the shape being across squared and rounded. Unique was that plies adjustment to the Center Ply were thicker than the Center ply. Blade thickness is usually about 6,9mm.

5-ply-wood with old tag.
The Repiaredo is rated OFF- and is providing a soft feeling,a good blade for loopers that need much control. To me the design is one of the nicest ones Butterfly ever released. In Germany the blade was never really available so not many players were or are still using it.

A 5-ply-wood produced for allround play providing soft feeling and much control, perfect for playing modern defence with inverted and pimples out Rubbers. The Print on head says "light weighted" but i doubt that a 92 gramms blade can be called light...

44. Butterfly Madash

Weight: 86 Gramms Sized: 15,7/14,9cm
with straightened and flatened lense and old tag Madash is a
5-ply-allwood, rated OFF and providing medium feel. Bai Yang was using it as main blade in the past, a great blade for Looping from half-distance. Blade Composition should be:
Planchonello-Walnut-Balsa-Walnut-Planchonello
Schlager used the Madash when he captured the 1996 US Open Doubles Championship. I first read it has been released in the early 2000, but i guess it is much older due to the straightened lense. Refering to an old Asian catalogue i think it was made in the 1990ies, due to the new font on head after 1991 and mainly made with FL-handle, priced at 5000 Yen like the Adolescen..but I know there were only a few ST handles made...
Update: Now i am completly sure Madash has been released in 1993.

47. Butterfly Allways

Weight: 82 Gramms Sized: 15,7/15,1cm
with New Logo Butterfly Sticker
After Blaszcyk left Butterfly and went to Tibhar Butterfly decided to change the Name of his model. So the Allways was Born...
Strange, since the Allways is rated ALL and not Off but has the same handle like the Struse series and less thickness

48. Butterfly Blaszczcyk (All)

Weight: 80 Gramms Sized: 15,7/15,1cm
The Allround model here with old tag, but not Made in Japan.
Regarding the complete design and the Chosen colors Butterfly created a very good looking blade.
Maybe I am wrong but I think for the Allways model Butterfly took the handle design of the Struse series and combined it with the veneer composition of this model to create a Kind of follower model....

The FS Handle was not really a cash-cow, you are right. For my personal taste conical handle would have been much better

49. Butterfly Legout Performance

Weight: 99 Gramms Sized: 15,7/15,1cm
Another blade with FS-Handle, a 5-ply-wood rated Off with medium feel and silver tag. Good blade for mid-distance...The Legout Performance was released in the year 2000, priced at 30€ and was also available withFL, AN and ST handle. Blade composition should be Limba-Abachi-Abachi-Abachi-Limba

50. Butterfly Kreanga ULC

Weight: 87 Gramms Sized: 15,7/15,1cm
Since we reached number 50 already a blade that needs not many explanations. Here the unused AN Version with Silver Tag. Fast and Deadly, like Kreangas backhand It is better not to show the ref the blade without attached rubbers
Blade Composition should be:
Hinocki-Unaxial Light Carbon-Kiri-Unaxial Light Carbon-Hinocki
Priced at 129€ the blade was available with ST, FL and like here with AN handle.
With the development of the new produced Carbon (ULC) Butterfly was able to reduce 18% of the carbon weight by not using crossed carbon fibers that were aligned in every direction.  Butterfly claimed that the ULC fiber also would rise the general feeling of the blade. Compared with the Primorac Carbon it was suited better for half distance play. The metallic sealing was made to alleviate the change of the attached rubbers.

51. Butterfly Oh Sang Eun

Weight 86 Gramms Sized: 15,7/15,1cm
here the FL Version with silver tag. Good 5-ply-wood for close to the table block and counter play, also fine at half distance.
Blade composition is Koto-Koto-Ayous-Koto-Koto
Very stiff blade with less vibrations it is one of the best blades ever made for blocking.
The Oh Sang Eun provides a medium feel, faster than a Primo Off- and slower than a Korbel i would rate it OFF- to OFF. Generating a medium to low throw. A Teammate is using it as his main blade for modern defensive play, chopping on backside and dropping deadly shots with it on the forehand....a reason that i should not like it too much

34. Butterfly Perdir

Weight: 86 Gramms Sized: 16,2/15,3cm
A 5-ply-wood, i think it is made of Hinoki, coming with old metal tag and no font on lense.
The Perdir is relativly unknown, i do not think it was very sucessful in sales since there are not many
informations about the Perdir available. I guess the history of it has been forgotten...
Maybe some members still remember the Perdir and are able to say something about it ...

You know, perdir in Spanish means "to lose."

Wrong--- pedir it means to ask for. "Perder" means To lose.

Butterfly lapuhta means butterfly the whore.

Sorry, please understand that i do not want to discuss prices in public in general. There are too many factors like Condition, Location, Shipping Costs and Custom Situation that have influence on market and asking prices...

52. Butterfly Tamropa

Weight: 82 Gramms Sized: 16,0/15,2cm
A 5-ply-allwood rated OFF with old metal tag.
Average Thickness 5,4mm with Limba Outer Plies. Regarding the blade dimensions the Tamropa is very light. Refering to the blade print it should be  a light blade for beginners. I have tested it with several Rubbers like Sriver L, Bluefire, Calibra Tour M and Tenergy 05 and would not recommand it for beginners since it is not a slow blade at all and has a strange bounce,
blocking either active or passive i found very difficult to handle. Perhaps the perfect allwood blade for offensive Play if you choose the right Rubbers.

53. Butterfly Appelgren

Weight: 86 Gramms Sized: 16,6/15,8cm
Old 5-ply-wood from the eighties with red sticker.
Although the blade dimensions are huge the weight is not too heavy.
Appelgren was a really good Player but he was not very lucky since he was playing at the same period with Waldner and Persson when these were celebrating their greatest international victories. Appelgren has always been in the shadow of the other Swedish Topstars and did not have a real chance to win the world Championship title. Teaming up with Waldner and Persson Sweden had the strongest Team in Europe in these days.

54. Kreanga Aeros

Weight: 93 Gramms Sized: 15,7/15,2 cm

here the FL-Version with stainless steel bracket.
Released in 2004 the Kreanga Aeros has 2 Glasfiber layers and 5 Wood layers. Now 10 years old the Aeros is already a kind of Youngtimer. A very fast and stiff blade for close to the table and counter-loopers. The Aeros is little slower than the Primorac Carbon and was available with ST,FL and AN handle priced at 60€. The first blade Butterfly ever has produced by using Glasfiber which is providing similar hardness compared with Carbon but having better feeling and a softer touch.
Butterfly was claiming that the new steel bracket was not only made as a new design Feature the bracket should also prevent losing the tag...
