Reminds me of trying to return Brett's snake serve.  Just felt like an idiot way too often.

And every serve was illegal (hiding ball w/ non-playing arm).

Not at all.  You are just too slow following the ball.

I don't think those serves are illegal. If you observe more closely, his non-playing arm is raised at a much higher level from the point of making contact with the ball. Many old players do this because of habit. I remember that he was once given a penalty of one point for doing so against schlager although on replay it didn't look like a hidden serve.

Wish I had a chance to practice serve return with him. Not only do I think his serves are legal, I also think he is the best at high toss serve currently.

I had a guy argue last weekend that very same thing about his arm being above the contact.  it wasn't really, and I complained although there was no judge available.

I wouldn't complain about this guy because I don't think he's hiding contact, but I don't see how you could claim the off arm was possibly being immediately pulled back.

The rule is very clear ... you must move your free arm out of the way once the ball is tossed:

2.06.05 As soon as the ball has been projected, the server’s free arm and hand shall be removed from the space between the ball and the net.
The space between the ball and the net is defined by the ball, the net and its indefinite upward extension.

ITTF have created a ton of silly rules in the past 25 years. Every serve is legal to me as long as there is no complain from my opponent.

We seem to want people to respect our sport, yet so many players openly cheat to win.

Thanks for posting the rule.  I'm surprised that so many players don't know the rules.
