Hi Friends, when you receive serves do you contact ball off the bounce (rising), at the top of bounce (peak), or when ball is falling (descending)? i'm a bit confused about the differences of these returns (arent they the same? the only thing different is timing which may allow the oppenent to recover quicker). what the the circumstances you would use any of them and please explain why.  keen to pick ur brains.Tongue

I've been taught that this depends on the sort of return your making.

If the serve is short and you want to play a drop shot/ touch-type-shot then you want to contact the ball early off the bounce. This helps keep your return low.

If you want to flick your return then you want to contact the ball at the top of the bounce.

First of all, you need to keep in mind that receive of serve is perhaps the most difficult aspect of table tennis. Even the pros will make mistakes. The second thing to keep in mind is how aggressive you want to be on your return. Being passive will only result in your return being attacked (flip killed), depending on your opponent of course. The three main tactical elements in TT are: placement, spin speed. Its essential to know how to control these and use variation.
Third point is to first develop the different shots that will make up your repertoire. Each technique requires you to make contact at different points of the ball trajectory.

best thing I can say is contact a coach!! it takes time and practice.

Yep, FdT had said it all. You can theoretically hit all returns from each of the phases. In fact the Chinese separate it further into: early rising, late rising, peak, early falling, late falling.

The REASON for hitting it at different points is for: a) efficiency of stroke b) effectiveness of stroke c) your opponent's expectation

The stronger you become the more you can and will muck around with option c which is to throw your opponent off.

Hope that helps,
Geko
