The introduction of the Tenergy series in 2008 has made a huge difference.

Most of them are sponsored by butterfly and get their equipment at no cost!
The recent price hikes coupled with currency exchange rate inflations, tenergies are now costing around 30% more than in previous years.

The speed glue ban and the introduction of the new 40+ rubbish balls made the big difference. I wonder how much some of the ITTF officials got paid to push for the change

Tackiness C and D were already among the best rubbers in the 80ties and nineties....when the spin oriented players had their place with the 38mm balls and the beloved green tables....those rubbers were already the best ones for defenders and allrounders.

The 40+ balls started in 2014. Now look at the numbers going back before that. Critical thinking skills sometimes work better than raw emotion.
My guess is since the 1980s there has been a pretty significant decline in Stiga and Yasaka and an increase in Donic and Tibhar. Butterfly was always big. Maybe not this big though.

But most of them could get their stuff from other companies at no cost and a stipend too. In fact, Butterfly sponsorships are a lot less lucrative for pro players than some other companies.
But you are right, for the rest of us zTenergy is crazy expensive.

Tenergy 05 unfortunately (expensive), is one of the best forehand rubbers , even for the amateurs. Butterfly ALC blades are very popular .

I remember playing with Butterfly Tackifire D back in the day. Little speed glue, and ready to loop. After that it was Catapult, with maybe a thin layer of speed glue. Not too much it was already soft, unlike the Tackifire D which was a medium hard to start (38 degree on Butterfly's scale).

that's somewhat counterintuitive.. if you are a pro and rely on sponsorship for a living you should go for the sponsorship which pays more and naturally the market share of the brands which pay more should increase... now it's like the butterfly is giving less and getting more :)

If you think of it this way, if players went for money over better equipment, they would be sacrificing long term results over short term compensation

Not really. You are only thinking of the star pros, of which there are few compared to the total number of professional players.
Visit leagues in Germany, France, Sweden, Poland. Drop below the stars, and you'll see that the pro-players mostly use whatever equipment that their sponsorship allows.

How does the graph look if we're just talking about China? What about if we're talking recreational players (trained but not professional)?

about China, I think this is a very very interesting question. Unfortunately, only butterfly can answer I guess.
About trained recreational players, I think the situations should be the same -dominated by butterfly because a lot players are emphasizing the importance of equipment way too much imho (and butterfly is da best : ) ).... Tenergy or MXP, ZLC vs ZLF vs ALC and so on... I think at our level technique is much more important then equipment...
In recreational leisure players, I'm pretty sure cheap pre-made bats dominate and the butterfly has way less of the market share...
About recreational leisure market, there was an interview with Tibhar owner recently and he said, that although margins are much slimmer, volumes are much much higher...
