Timo Boll the title holder lost in the 1st round. He has one match left to keep his pride and dignity.

Posted By: Patmandidily
Date Posted: 10/28/2006 at 12:42am

Timo's group was pretty tough. Really, any of the top-10 European guys could beat one another and in their group, a lot of the matches would be very unpredictable (minus the more predictable matches from Chen Weixing). Part of it was that him and Samsonov have played in a million European finals too, so that match was a coinflip.

Final prediction - Ma Lin beats Wang Liqin 4-2, maybe 4-1 if it's a good day

in my mind, most of the games between the chinese team members are "fishy" as you put it.

i think as far as the chinese team is concerned, the world cup "belongs" to ma lin, so i'll be shocked if the score in the final later is anything other than 4-0 or 4-1, ma lin, inspite of the fact that wang hao has looked very good of late. cctv5 is gonna show that and the 3rd place match live starting at 9 am, eastern...

anyway, somebody from outside of china has got to beat him here and boll was the only one who could, but he didn't even get out of his group!

takaaki u are absolutely correct as u see in the japan open liqin crushed wang hao in straight games which showed how good he is right now and how much difference is their between ma lin and wang hao and also liqin beat ma lin in the japan open recently so how the hell this loss take place as far as boll is concerned he has problems playing kreangas backhand and samsanov so his loss is justified anyway i support wang hao not ma lin i am sick and tired seeing him win the world cup titles.

I admit it does seem fishy, but in the interview with Wang after the match, he sounds pretty honest about the loss. He blames bad serve/receive technique, but expressly says he's happy that it's an all Chinese final.

If you wanted to dump the match, why would you dump it 4-0? And would you advertise the fact that you're happy for the rest of the team? Maybe the simplest explanation is true? He lost the match.

mostly people that post trash about the chinese are the barzileans like jornalista, why' there are many japanese descents in brazil and they hate chinese

most penholders in brzil play jap ,well they are extremely wise to know the secrets of the chinese ,like dump theories maybe jornalista must have a sattelite dish in his yard to know wlq dumped to wang hao or he can stand wlq losing?

takaki you call fishy when japan use second hand chinese to play for japan like kanizawa ,yoshida, iseki to play teams, who is fishy?

I really doubt Wang lost to Ma on purpose. Ma has won it so many times where as Wang needs to win the World Cup to get 2 of the 3 triple crown titles. If they were letting each other win as you said, Wang should've lost to Ma at the World Championships and Ma should lose to Wang in World Cup, that way they both only need the gold medal to seal their place in history.

he was suppose to take it home, guess he has no luck in the world cups

the world championship is a much bigger and tougher event.....he will take that when the world championship comes ;p theres always next year for the world cup....haha they hold this event every year unlike the world champion and olympic.....wlq is still young! only 27! hes gonna play till hes 40 like waldner!

I don't know about Wang playing until he is 40. We are talking about the Chinese Table Tennis team here, where world champions are expected to retire by 30. Wang is definitely in superb physical shape, but there are simply too many up and coming guys. Window of opportunity closing for Ma and Wang.

Posted By: Jolan
Date Posted: 10/30/2006 at 6:15am
Maybe WLQ looses interest in whatever is not world championship or Olympics. Because he has the exact skills needed to beat Ma Lin. That said, when Ma Lin is "in the zone", nobody can stop him. Wang Hao lost because he couldn't change tactic at the end, which is exactly what Ma Lin did in serving short on Wang Hao FH. Ma Lin is undoubtly the best player at the mmnt but what a brat ! His behaviour at the table is getting worse and worse. He doesn't even bother to notice when he has a lucky ball !

Yes i noticed this too, wangs backhand is significantly more powerfull, it was already great but now its even better... i think ma barely used his RPB that game, in fact i only recall him using it twice and no wang didnt return them, but ma only uses his rpb for opening attacks, he never really uses it in rallies

Does anyone have Samsonov vs Wang Liqin

Posted By: mrsultan
Date Posted: 10/31/2006 at 4:37am

Firstly Can someone put Samsonov vs Wang Liqin match and is there any match of Joo available can someone put it up tat if possible?

Secondly regrading all you pplz comments that Wang lost on purpose although for some reason i want to believe this but the fact of matter is that in Table Tennis one can easily have a bad day when he is not sighting the ball to well and as pointed out by Wang a weak recieve can seal 4-0 thrashing at this level. And besides Wang Liqin style of play in my opinion though comprehensive but risky and when it pays off its specacular but when it does not it looks quite ordinary Yes i am taking about his counter LOOPING.

Date Posted: 10/31/2006 at 5:55am

Schlager needs more than a haircut, he needs confidence. I felt bad for Liqin but come on, did you see how well Ma Lin played?  Dou you know if an official DVD of this world cup will be available?

The French Table Tennis Federation will produce a double DVD (8 hours) and will sell it in France. You may be able to order it on the internet when it will come out.

Regarding Wang Liqin performance, I really think there was no arrangement between players. I was there and you could see Wang Liqin was not missing shots on purpose. Ma Lin used topspin serves very well and Wang Liqin didn't find effective returns (when he was actually able to read the spin!). Ma Lin prevent Wang Liqin from playing forehands, and Wang Liqin missed backhands he normally doesn't.
It wasn't much interesting to see but it was just because of Ma Lin's good tactic and Wang Liqin's bad form.

During the final, I really thinked Wang Hao would win. He was faster, more powerful and with better placement. But Ma Lin, at the end, managed to have Wang Hao playing in his forehand and counter loop it in style. But IMO Wang Hao was the best player of the tournament.

Wrong. He's not the chamption. not enough? Didn't even get out of group play.

Absolutly ! Timo Boll is NOT quite as good as Ma Lin or Wang Liqin.

Sure, he could beat Ma in World Cup last year, Sure, he could beat Wang in the World Cup last year. Face to Face, he always has good chances.
But the big difference between Boll and Wang/Ma is that Boll is not able to beat any kind of player (kreanga, samsonov).
The Chinese are just so perfect, they have no problems with "special" europeans as Samsonov (excellent blocking....)
Boll might be good against the chinese, but he always has problems with any kind of europeans !

Wang Liqin looked like he gave the game away to ma lin.  He didn't look like he was complaining too much about his mistakes during his match against ma lin.  i think he does not care who wins, just as long as one of the chinese players win the final.  he played more serious against chuan than ma.  i guess is their chinese way of dealing things.  someone has to win the final right?  i have to admit that ma lin's forehand became faster just as wang hao's rpb got better.  if you watch wang liqin's game against chuan, you will notice that he has been improving his backhand and is trying to become more balance from both wings.

Thats true, But I really can't see someone who has played Ma so much just suddenly giving this match away. I'm sure he would like a chinese to win but Wang is chinese, why wouldn't he want it haha.  And also I thought pro's still had coaches...Wang didn't....I'm not sure if Ma did or not but I'm positive Wang didn't?

When two players of the same country or team have to play against eachother there usually isn't a coach. Not in the match of wang liqin - Ma Lin, not in the match of Wang Hao - Ma Lin.

No one gave matches to anyone, not Liqin to Ma, not Boll to Kreanga, this is not pro boxing!  Ma Lin won the cup 3 times already, seems perfectly normal that he won it again.

the reason wang wasnt complaining about errors was because he was playing a country mate and he wishes to be courteous, two countrymates also tend not to "cho" too often either

Ahhh ok..>I guess it makes sence.. if I'm playing against someone from my province I don't use a coach either

If you wanted to dump the match, why would you dump it 4-0? And would you advertise the fact that you're happy for the rest of the team? Maybe the simplest explanation is true? He lost the match.

what else can he say, opinari?? "i'm so pissed that coach liu ordered me to dump that game just so ma can get to no. 2 in the world and win a record 4th world cup!! and i really hope wang hao disobeys orders and beats the crap out that little bugger cuz he sure doesn't deserve it!!"

dumping matches is illegal, so wang (or any other player) isn't gonna say anything which would tip the officials off to what he did. nothing but negative consequences would come to him if he did...

4-0... maybe he (or they) didn't want to extend ma for too long and risk an injury. for those of you who watched the final you might have noticed ma occasionally reaching for his back after being stretched out in a rally. he may have a back problem...

or maybe wang was saying, "well, since i gotta lose anyway, why make it last any longer than what it has to??"

yes, i know, it's just speculation on my part, but i don't think it's a total impossibility. at any rate, it doesn't matter if you lose 4-0 or 4-3, it's still a loss.

another consideration would be that if wang liqin won that match and then samsonov pulled off a miracle and beat wang hao, then he might be so pumped up he might upset wang liqin in the final, which is exactly what he did in the world cup 5 years ago. wang liqin actually was actually undefeated in ittf "ranking" events for 1 whole damn year until that loss to samsonov!

and i think the 3rd place match confirmed that possibility, cuz wang just barely beat samsonov, 4-3. samsonov basically lost the match due to some untimely errors in the 3rd game when he had set point, i believe.

anyway, it was quite fortuitous for the chinese team that samsonov took out boll and then lost to the 2 wangs.

wlq will probably stay at no. 1 for the rest of the year and ma will probably move up to no. 2. and wang hao will move closer to boll.

the chinese top-4 will not be playing in anymore pro tour events until the finals in december. boll, on the other hand, will play 2 events before then. if he can win, he may be able to get himself back into the no. 2 spot.

a friend of mine had an interesting quip about boll after the loss. he said that boll has been so obsessed with learning how to beat the chinese (especially wlq) that he's forgotten how to beat the europeans! last month, in the champions league, he lost to his doubles partner, christian suess!! and now he loses to 2 guys he generally beats, kreanga and samsonov. although samsonov beats him sometimes, he shouldn't have lost to kreanga.

someone above said that wang hao was the best player at the tournament and i totally agree. he would have won had he not, well, you know what i'm gonna say...

It is funny to hear that someone is thinking that the chinese team cares about the ranking so that some player will purposely lose to another to 'promote' the latter's ranking. the ranking is not important to them at all. if the ranking is really important, they wouldn't miss so many ittf tour every year.

how has missing "so many tournaments" hurt their ranking??

besides, if you don't care about the ranking (or the money, or the titles, for that matter), then why play at all??
