Wow! Everyone looks serious.  No messing around.  LGL must have offered a prize or said "anyone not giving 100% will get demoted to the B team".

Nah, not this one I believe, I think the one she won was in the previous years, this year I watched a clip where she lost to FZD.

So this was a pre-Budapest training camp in Austria (with Liu Jia, Gardos, Habesohn...). What was the playing system - how many points did the men spot the women?

Adam must have been talking of previous years,
The arrangement was China/Austria Men team vs China/Austria women team , it was first to 11 points and the girls were given 2-4 points odds ahead of play, the male team won 41-40]

Smart of Austrians to invite the Chinese to train.
And all but a few countries could learn a great deal by inviting just the Chinese women.

CAN WE JUST TAKE A MOMENT TO APPRECIATE THIS

Serena Williams had no chance against a top 200 male in her prime!

Not surprising at all. Table tennis is not tennis. The table is only 5' wide.

Zhang Yining beat highly ranked men in exhibitions.

When Gao Jun was still playing ITTF events with a WR in the 30s, she played about 2700 level in many usatt tournaments against men.

It would be surprising if the CNT women didn't do well. The euro men are not used to the quick off the bounce playing style of the women's game.

FTFY. Agree, it's amazing. Not many sports where skill so often trumps differences in gender, age, size, strength.

IMO, the shown subset of results is almost meaningless as each pair of players only played 1 game. However, had each match was a full best of 5 or 7 and all 81 match results were listed, then it would have been a different matter.

a good clue to these results is when harimoto was beating top players at 14 years old.
I can't imagine a 14 year old tennis player beating the top folks.
or a 14 year old nba player.
or a 14 year old top soccer player.
maybe that's why many people don't consider table tennis a sport LOL

Jennifer Capriati was ranked in the top 10 in tennis at 14 years old.

Martina Hingis won Wimbledon doubles at 15, singles at 16.

Tracy Austin won the US Open at 16.

I think the burden will be on men's side.  People expect them to win, while women have nothing to lose, so they can play more freely.

the point is, physical strength is not so important in table tennis as in other sports.
that's why tomokazu harimoto can beat top players.
same reason why women can beat men.

it's been mentioned that in tennis top women don't stand a chance against top men.

In the 90s the top men on the Chinese national team could give the women 7 points in a game to 21.  Now the spot is usually 3-4 in a game to 11.  If the Chinese women's team were allowed to compete in the men's division it would be interesting to see how they would do.  They would have no chance against the Chinese men but I think they would beat most of the men's teams.

Boris Becker was on the German first team at 14, won matches against adults at 15/16, won Wimbledon at 17.

Michael Chang won a match in the US Open main draw when he was 15, won a pro tourney at 16, won the French Open at 17.

Nadal at the French was the last real prodigy, but seriously,  these things don't happen in tennis as much.

I was also thinking that Chinese women don't have much incentive to play men when their most dangerous opponents are Ito Mima and Hirano Miu.
It is the rank 100 guy who can learn most from such (close?) matches.
