nice to see young western cpen player rising up. His forhand still has a lot to improve. It would be better for him to learn from Wang hao and Ma lin.

His fh will be like xu xin very soon. His bh is now the pillar of his game and I think the coaches do not want to overload him, they say clearly they want to advance little step after little step.
I am nobody to interpret anything publicly and that's the personal thought of a new Lebrun fan: I think Felix' coaches do not want Felix to fragilize his dominant bh for now. They encourage him to play free and let his fh develop itself naturally without forcing anything. They want mother nature and Felix to work in harmony together and they just make sure nothing interferes. It's the best coaching possible, they love him by letting him be his own game.
Look at what happened to TH, somehow the coaches wanted to shove in his game what they think is the best for him. Felix' coaches want him to discover all that by himself and they just support him and answer his questions, they help him in his research without imposing anything to him. This is beyond beautiful and I am in awe. This is the true way to raise kids, to raise champions, I take lesson here!

This is so unfair. Obviously he was not exposed to that type of play enough to deal with it on the fly. Shame on you for taking down a teenager hitting him under the belt, you can do so much better.

Yep, Felix is at the level of polishing shoes just like Kanak is at the level of the ball boys. It’s ok, we need a little bit of everything to make a successful forum and I respect your thinking.
also his name lebrun sounds similar to lebron.... the year they played world championships in USA

It went down to 9-9 in the decider, a 2 point match! is that really polishing shoes? I say you didn't see the match before "contributing".

Cut the kid a slack.
He is very good for his age and it's enjoyable to watch such penholder for a change.
I'm even more impressed with He Zhiwen who will be 60 years old next month.
He is a beast and it's always exciting to watch his unique style.

HZW is a legend. I will never forget how he almost spanked Kreanga in WTTC 2003 in Paris. The Greek superstar had balls of steel saving match point looping like there is no tomorrow.
It's an honor for the kid to take a lesson from the veteran and his loss is maybe a good thing for him because he is going to take the style seriously and it will make him a more complete player from the get go.

WORK ON WHAT HAS BEEN SPOILED Has supreme success. It furthers one to cross the great water. Before the starting point, three days. After the starting point, three days.
Transforming into
THE GENTLE. Success through what is small. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. It furthers one to see the great man.
We can always make it work. Like in backgammon, no matter what the dice say good or bad, there is always a move among all possible that is better that all others.

Saw the full match from london2012 channel. Kid scuffed the daylights outta HZW's shoes and nearly stomped them down. Kid gave a LOT better fight than many league pro players give HZW. If this kid grows, maybe some jokers gunna be polishing kid's shoes.

Time to revisit this thread. It's funny how Alexis was less talked about, undoubtedly because Felix attracted more attention with the PH grip.
This tournament in Budapest is their explosion on the international stage, what a fiesta!

One reason has to do with big Lebrun playing only junior events up until 2019. According to WTT, he has turned pro for 1 year only. He started competing in 2015, but didn't play international events at all in 2017 and 2020. He only started competing in senior events in 2021, specifically WTT Contender Lasko(11/1-7) and Novo Mesto(11/8-14). The last junior event he played was WTT Youth Star Contender Otocec(3/29-4/2). WTT Contender Lasko(11/1-7) - QR1 Novo Mesto(11/8-14) - QR2
OTOH, little Lebrun started competing in 2018, yet he already competed in senior events in 2021, specifically WTT Contender Lasko(11/1-7) and Novo Mesto(11/8-14), same as his older brother. The last junior event he played was WTT Youth Star Contender Otocec(3/29-4/2). WTT Contender Lasko(11/1-7) - QR3 Novo Mesto(11/8-14) - R16, 3-2 CCY w/ injured wrist in R32, significant enough for me to write about him.
It shows how weak Europe is, which I've been preaching for years, when Calderano and Harimoto get mentioned in a thread about young European prospects.
The only young prospect from Europe worth keeping an eye on is Lebrun. Forget the other ones over 20. They should be competing against the world's best by now and looking ready to replace "Ovtcharov, Franziska, Gauzy, Falck, Pitchford, Freitas, etc."
The impression that European players mature later stems from the educational system reform, as pointed out by Rosskopf in 2019. And that's what makes Lebrun worthy of attention because he's not bogged down by that. He's on a similar trajectory as Harimoto and LYJ by starting really young, competing against players many years his senior, even scoring wins and making the main draw at 15 years and 2 months old in a senior event, which is very difficult after the World Ranking reform in 2018.
For comparison, Harimoto(then 15 and 3) and LYJ(then 17 and 1) stopped competing in junior events after the Youth Olympic Games 2018. Moregard is going to compete at the World Youth Championships this December, in the U19 event at the age of 19 and 9. Come on. To add insult to injury, Moregard is ranked even lower than Februn in the U19.
Calderano, who didn't switch to table tennis until 14, was already making a name for himself at WJTTC 2014, YOG 2014 and Rio 2016. He also stopped competing in U21 events after that Olympic games when he was eligible for another year. Think about it.
The only young prospect from Europe worth keeping an eye on is Lebrun. Forget the other ones over 20. They should be competing against the world's best by now and looking ready to replace "Ovtcharov, Franziska, Gauzy, Falck, Pitchford, Freitas, etc."
Chinese forums may not be the most reliable sources for French players.

Thanks for the heads up. The Tieba's comment is actually consistent with the one by Music&Ping (OldUser?) on TTD, a member from France. I wonder where they got their source.
Below are more sources from 2021 where Felix mentions Chen Jian.
"I saw a penholder, a Chinese player who was playing for Istres Club, Chen Jian", explained Felix Lebrun. "He was also a practice partner for some time for the men's team at the national training centre, INSEP. I liked him and his style of play very much, I took him as an example, as a model."
You are one of the few successful young penhold players, who or what inspired you to play this style?
When I was young there was a French Division 1 player called Chen Jian who trained in Montpellier. When I went to the gym with my father I often saw him train and wanted to play like him! I continued to play this way and really enjoyed it, so this became my style.
As far as I know, Chen Tianyuan and his family live in Cholet, close to his club of La Romagne and quite the distance from where the Lebrun are based, in Montpellier. I'm quite doubtful that he's ever been their coach. As far as I know, the Lebruns have always had French coaches.

At that time stamp, the dad says that Felix saw a cpen Chinese player named Shenzen play and later on asked if he could use the same grip, when he started "baby ping" at 3-4 years old. That would indicate Felix was impressed by the cpen grip at 2 years old... An early adopter!

Shenzen = Chen Jian.

Just https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/topics/european-games-2023.31432/post-413802" rel="nofollow - found out Gauzy has been struggling mentally, and needless to say the Lebrun brothers are a big factor, among others.
Did the dazzling arrival of the Lebrun brothers also play a role? I laugh about it with everyone: a year and a half ago, I had never heard of them. A year ago, I was sure to make the Games, today this is no longer the case (there will be three selected by teams, two of which will be able to compete in the singles). When you see yourself sinking and them climbing at an unprecedented speed... I took a hit. I think it's pretty legit, I'm not ashamed to say it. I also think it will do me good, everyone has been waiting for my results for almost fifteen years, it is I who have brought the best French results overall... There, it will make an incredible team. Even if I don't qualify in singles, the team is potentially medalable. It's up to me to focus on my project. They play extremely well, I have nothing to do with it, and they have nothing to do with my results either.

Good find about Gauzy. Yeah that has to be rough to kind of have them come out of nowhere. A risk for all pro athletes, being replaced by some upstart. You rarely hear about one being replaced.

Gauzy closed the Bronze medal match with a win for France. That must have felt good given his overall struggles and broadly served as a reminder of the valuable role he plays when he is at his best. He probably also has a good chance at playing mixed doubles with Pavade (unless Lebesson can find a way to replace Gauzy on the men's team as a more valuable partner with Alexis). I think working on his doubles with Alexis might make the team better.

I like to imagine the 2 brothers made a pact when they were still little kids: no matter one of us gets ahead, the other will be happy about it and will encourage it before catching up. Hopefully it happens many times both ways in their careers and they'll support themselves up all the way.
They are world class players who have something nobody else has: a world class practice partner at home who happens to be a blood brother they know by heart. They must know the immense value of it like we do, why wouldn't they? On their way to become grown-up men, dark feelings rising when one gets a series of more success will be unavoidable and they will force inner work to use them as positive fuel to keep warming up the pact.
