WTTC 2018 feels so long ago. Ito won the WTTC 2018 trial. Hayata, finalist of the trial, and Nagasaki, for defeating WJTTC 2016 champion Shi Xunyao at WJTTC 2017 and Elizabeta Samara at Qatar Open 2018, were selected by recommendation. Ishikawa by highest world-ranked JNT player in Dec, 2017 and defeating 6 top 30 world-ranked non-JNT players in 2017. Hirano by defeating top 3 world-ranked CNT players and 6 top 30 world-ranked non-JNT players in 2017.

Very beneficial updates!
Thanks!
------------- Tenergy: Two weeks of heaven, followed by three months of excellence, then, a nice rubber.
Nagasaki is a southpaw with a powerful shot. In WTTC 2018, she was selected by recommendation, but remained benched throughout the tournament.
The strongest trio of Ito, Hirano, and Hina Hayata (Nippon Life), who are two years older, is a high-ranking stronghold, but it is a rival that must be defeated in order to participate in the Paris Olympics. "The three people born in 2000 have been strong since they were in elementary school, and I was wondering why the gap was so wide between them (and me). Until now, I always thought, "amazing, amazing", while keeping in mind that I can also do it myself, that even though (the three of them) are strong, I want to become a cool player like my seniors," said Nagasaki.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3IY-SqywRU" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3IY-SqywRU The emotions displayed in the short clip above echos my predictions for Nagasaki and Kihara.
At this rate, Nagazaki will drop off the radar. She's only less than 2 years younger than Ito and the likes. If CNT's experience applies as well for JNT, she will live under their shadows and fade away. Kihara has it a little better given those 2 extra years, but it will still be difficult for her.
I still feel the same for Nagasaki. Comparing to Ito and Hirano at the same age, she's already behind.
2020 This one from 5ch, not mine. https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/showthread.php?22664-2020-World-Team-Table-Tennis-Championships&p=317363&viewfull=1#post317363" rel="nofollow - https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/showthread.php?22664-2020-World-Team-Table-Tennis-Championships&p=317363&viewfull=1#post317363
If that happens, Hirano will have it the worst. Unlike Ishikawa and Ito who have already participated in the Olympics, if Hirano can't participate in the Olympics this time, she may end up without playing the Olympics for a lifetime. 4 years later, in addition to Ito the Great Demon King, the Olympics in Paris will also see Nagasaki and Kihara rising. It's possible that Hayata will be even stronger, so it wouldn't be strange for Hirano to drop out.
Yes, for the most part, judging from what happened in 2019 and early 2020. They'll have a much harder time than Hirano, Ito and Hayata when they displaced Ishikawa in 2017, 2018, and 2020. Miwa Harimoto will turn 16 in 2024. This is essentially the Warring States period.
To borrow http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=81794&PID=1015089&title=1984-cctv-spring-festival-gala#1015089" rel="nofollow - Wu Jingping's analogy for FZD from 2014 , the blockers ahead and pursuers behind Nagasaki and Kihara are some of the strongest not just in recent decades but also in JNT's history, as Hirano implied in an interview after Tokyo 2020.
——Besides you, Ishikawa, Ito, Hayata et al., there are many strong players now. What do you think of such a table tennis world where various players arise?
"Our generation is very strong, and whether from the same era or other generations, many strong players have also emerged, which is really great for the table tennis world, but on the other hand, if I still can’t win there, it’s meaningless, so I want to become the best player among them."
Compared to the Tokyo 2020 cycle, this Paris 2024 cycle highlights even more just how weak and fortunate Ishikawa's era was. Some may find my constant bashing annoying, but the Olympic results justified my assessment of Ishikawa after Rio 2016. Shouldn't have played Tokyo 2020. A third wheel. Any team composition of Ito/Hirano/Hayata/Nagasaki/Kihara would have guaranteed the same results in singles and team at a minimum.
Now that Ito and Hirano are fast maturing, her role in the team feels awkward.
It's not about age. It's about who has more potential. The current Ishikawa is just like the then Mizutani in 2012, always claiming to beat China only to lose miserably to players from other countries...Ishikawa may be able to beat Ito and Hirano, but she doesn't stand a chance against China. Not that Ito and Hirano are any better, but they have shown the potential.

As demonstrated in that video, one of Mima's issues, which her opponents are exploiting more often, is her short legs/arms. I remember watching Mima vs. Suthasani Sawetabutt at the 2021 WTTC and noticing over and over again that Suthasani was exploiting this by hitting the corners. And again this was an issue with her match with Nagasaki. She noted in her post Nagasaki match interview that she felt like she couldn't move thus unable to score points.
As for Miwa, all I can say is wow! Despite the 0-4 score, each game was as close as can be with Miwa being up 10-6 in the 1st (need to work on her mental game). Her development has been better than her brother's as it doesn't look like she's skipping anything. Perhaps part of that is that girls develop at an earlier age. But already, she beat Minami Ando who has a pretty decent record in T-League. There's something about the Harimotos around that age 13/14 where they just explode in level so it'll be fun to keep an eye on her development this year.
HH has been the most stable of all of the Japanese women so I expect she'll be in Paris. I'll also be watching if Miyu Nagasaki will fulfill her potential. Very powerful player from both wings like HH. Looks like her transition to being a Red Elf with HH has really helped her game :).

Glad you posted that point, zeio. I watched the match last night and it was a good one. Very close games with Miwa just not being able to convert. And that one point was amazing haha.

I follow this, but not as closely as some of you. Do you think Mima Ito has peaked as a singles player? I watched her matches at the Houston Worlds and I didn't see any forward progress, I got the impression people were catching up to her game and tactics.

Japan's last Olympics selection process was obviously flawed, therefore they did not pick the best players. They simply picked the highest ranked players to play in the last Olympics. That was insane. You pick your best players according to ability, not according to the Ittf ranking.
As I said millions of times before, Hayata should have been picked in the last Olympics and WTTC. She has been arguably the second best player in Japan for the last 3 years. Japan missed a trick by not picking her in the last Olympics and world championship.
Kasumi and Hirano will not pose any serious threat to the Chinese and picking them would just be a waste of 2 precious spots.

My picks for the 2024 Olympics: Ito, Hayata, Nagasaki
In Sports' terms, the two years before the next Olympics is a long period of time. In this regard, all with a brain observe Harimoto charging upward rapidly.
The Japanese women have the "China problem" of having a group of outstanding players all worthy of opportunity. With the trends clear for the sport into the future, the most susceptible to miss the Olympics with Harimoto in the mix is Ito.
We know that Isikawa will not go down without a fight. Hirano hasn't been interesting for some time now.
It will be fascinating to watch this.
Thanks.

Possibly... at a minimum she has hit a plateau. The Chinese have video analyzed her to death. And her compatriots are aware of her weaknesses. Shibata took her to 7 games before losing though to be fair Mima Ito beat her 4-0 straight at the All Japan. And now she's been beaten by Nagasaki's wonderful play.
It's pretty amazing she's even gotten where she has despite her physical size limitations and limitations of short pips. I remember back in 2019 when she was going through a slump losing to CXT at both the Bulgarian and Czech Open. The next tournament was in Paraguay and she elected to skip it. Lots of netizens were criticizing for that since she was in a points race towards the Tokyo Olympics, but I fully understood it. She needed to right the ship. She was proven right by beating SYS and WMY at the Swedish Open before losing to CM.
I've noticed she's limiting her serves by serving exclusively from the middle now. I'm assuming she and her coach analyzed this to be most effective. But I've always felt her service game was one of her best attributes, and I wonder if limiting the serve variations is the right decision. Plus, I wanna see that scorpion serve again :). Knowing that her opponents are keying on her physical limitations, she has to do a better job of anticipating this and be ready to move. And before the bh-bh rallies get too spinny especially with the Chinese, she'll have to hit to the opposite corner or pivot to fh despite the risk. Anyhow, I hope she can right the ship again.

Although I agree Ishikawa won't go down without a fight, I just don't see her being top 3 any longer. She can get overpowered by HH, and as we saw at the All Japan, Miyu Kato did the same to her.
Hirano does have mental problems, but I wouldn't count her out just yet. She played exceptionally well at the 2021 WTTC taking CM to 7 games.
I agree this will all be fascinating to watch as this tournament just goes to show how fiercely competitive the race to Paris 2024 will be as none of the current Tokyo Olympians made it to the semis.

Hi Donn, agree that 2 years is a long time in sport. But why persist with players who have failed time and time again against the Chinese ? There is a famous saying: " Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Kasumi & Hirano have tried many times but failed to beat the Chinese. They would more than likely disappoint again in 2024. Judging by potential, recent form and results, Hayata and Nagasaki are better players anyway. A change of personnel is necessary in my opinion. Ito is Ito, she is still regarded as the best player in Japan.

I think the most exciting player to watch right now is Miyu Nagasaki. I know it's just one tournament, but there's a lot to like. Let's not forget that she beat Zhu Yuling *twice* when she was just 17. I was afraid that her getting beaten badly by Hina Hayata at both the WTTC and ATTC trials would affect her psyche. But if anything she's gotten stronger mentally. In her match against Mima, she was down 1-2 in games and down 5-9 in the 4th game. It would be easy to give in to the pressure playing against the All Japan champion, but she was calm and focused. I know people might say she broke down against HH, but that's fine. HH is just the most solid Japanese player right now. She came back from 0-3 against JJH to win the Star Contender in Doha. She came back from 1-3 against Miyu Kato at the All Japan. There's no shame in basically playing even in a best of 7 against someone whose dominated you. I just enjoy watching players maximize their potential so I just hope this continues for Miyu Nagasaki.

Hayata vs Shibata https://youtu.be/PJMcDrfEoOQ?t=276" rel="nofollow - https://youtu.be/PJMcDrfEoOQ?t=276 A half long serve to force a weak opening loop from Hayata and then pivot to counterloop that return. The FH stroke, footwork and grit involved in this setplay practically made it exclusive to the men not that long ago. Now you see more and more women pull that off. The next several points and the subsequent games also saw them both trying to finish with the FH whenever possible, another trait that was uncommon in the women's game several years ago.
https://youtu.be/PJMcDrfEoOQ?t=851" rel="nofollow - https://youtu.be/PJMcDrfEoOQ?t=851 Hayata's trademark asian squat FH, no easy feat even for asians.
Harimoto, and I mean Miwa's older brother and Hayata's current (XD partner), could take a page from the book of " https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/showthread.php?21464-How-is-the-women-s-game-different-from-men&p=282362&viewfull=1#post282362" rel="nofollow - masculinization of the women's style ". I still think https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/showthread.php?21945-Swedish-Open-2019&p=290321&viewfull=1#post290321" rel="nofollow - Hayata could outrun him now .

https://youtu.be/PJMcDrfEoOQ?t=1327" rel="nofollow - https://youtu.be/PJMcDrfEoOQ?t=1327 Another notable pointer of "masculinization" is the hit-right-back/turn-the-tables shot when clearly out of position after losing the initiative as Hayata demonstrates in this point. It was more or less exclusive to the men's game but the frequency of occurence has increased since the change to ABS ball that you start seeing it in the women's game regularly. Hayata has consistently done it like https://youtu.be/dy_VXO2yMOU?t=436" rel="nofollow - here and https://youtu.be/KU1CQuG4WwY?t=986" rel="nofollow - here . Ito has pulled it off https://youtu.be/D3WmZIno7vs?t=2520" rel="nofollow - time from https://youtu.be/bpN9gCeaRLg?t=342" rel="nofollow - time that anticipation can make up for height and reach. Hi,
You are to be applauded for quoting Einstein; a good strategy!
Consistently, the Japanese are very meritocratic in that they feature actual results in selected competitions to determine the national team members. There will be a formal trial to decide who will be on the team. Other countries are more discretionary than Japan. This Japanese philosophy has harmed them in the past because it is invoked at early ages in judging which young players should be provided the best opportunities. Many styles featuring deception produced positive competition outcomes that would not be realized at higher skill levels, yet because these juniors were competition successful, they displaced the better-structured players. These deception-based players failed when they participated in the higher ranks.
Yes, for sure Ito is Ito. Never would I doubt her future success in Japan. The limitation with Hirano is the same as seen with Kasumi; there isn't a distinctive playing quality that promotes the highest level play.
I must say in general I'm in awe of the Japanese table tennis culture. They are thinking big in challenging the Chinese; they have abundant resources for support; started their national professional league to develop their players; they have patience; and have a great history to inspire them. Their contribution to the sport is immense.
Thanks.
Thanks.

"What do I have to do to win?" "It was a painful yet enjoyable match, which is a first for me." On Nagasaki's strength, she points out it has to be BH-to-BH exchanges. Nagasaki hit everything back, no matter the pace or path, so she couldn't do it like she did at All-Japan 2022. However, starting in G4, it turned into FH-to-FH exchanges, and she feels that her FH was in better shape than before. Her game opened up from there. On winning the qualifier, she says that winning a difficult match will allow her to play with a stronger belief in herself against CNT players at the Olympics and WTTC. Through this qualifier, she has a better idea of her level. After reaching the QF (at WTTC)[note: R16 instead], it's been 4-3 or 3-2 matches, so it will become important how to play to win from now on. This time, she found a way out without the help of a coach. It was a match in which she truly overcame by her wits. Lastly, having finished the T.League season, she came into this qualifier in fatique, but through good care, was able to enter the final at 100%, without worrying "because the body can't move, I couldn't carry out this tactic" etc.
Hayata's comment above echoes LGL's assessment of ML after Rotterdam 2011, that ML "should prioritize making the opponent uncomfortable over making yourself comfortable."
https://rallys.online/topic/domestic/220306lioncup-nagasakimiyuu/" rel="nofollow - https://rallys.online/topic/domestic/220306lioncup-nagasakimiyuu/ Nagasaki says that she gave it her all, but Hayata always had an answer when pushed into a corner. At first, she was on top in FH-to-FH exchanges, but Hayata realized that and changed it up in various ways to disrupt her flow. She noted that elementary students are best at long serves but she had not used it recently due to fear, and used it to good effect here. But against strong players, it still came down to the rallies, and she thought "how do I extend the point to the rally?" and is glad she could do 100% what she practiced in the match. In terms of power, she feels that she has the upper hand and thought "give it a shot" and "nothing to lose". Lastly, she lost to Hayata in straight games at the qualifiers for WTTC 2021 and ATTC 2021, so her goal was to take 1 game at All-Japan 2022. This time she wanted to take 2 games, so she finds it surprising herself for taking 3 games. On the qualifier where teammates are pitted against each other, she is honestly not good at it, and so she's actually playing against herself. She wonders can those who have practiced hard, thought hard and have a hard time end up at the top? On coming up one step short, she says it's regrettable but it's been a very painful year, when she thinks about it, she gets the feeling "ah, I have come this far." She feels disappointed, but that's her current level, therefore, it's acceptable. On whether her perception of Paris 2024 has changed, she says this tournament has given her confidence that she could do it and she has proven that she can do more. She defeated Ito this time, but she will do her best to become a player who can continue to win and not just once.

The selection method for the Olympic representatives differs depending on the country/region, and there is no completely correct answer. There are some disagreements about this method, but at least the method of deciding the singles representative merely by world ranking like for the Tokyo Olympics, the ranking gap at the start of the selection race was huge, and the candidates were narrowed down too much from the beginning. Hayata, who was injured and couldn't participate in international competitions, recovered and was rapidly gaining strength, but couldn't make it in time. Even players like Nagasaki wouldn't become the singles representative at the Paris Olympics with the previous method.
The women were in a confused battle where it wouldn't be strange for anyone to remain in the top eight, and for the men, players like Jo Yokotani(Aichi Institute of Technology) and Hiroto Shinozuka(Aichi Institute of Technology) emerged. This selection method is more suitable for the current situation in Japan, where there are many up-and-coming young players, than the one for the Tokyo Olympics.
Well, that's the "hidden obstacle" of this selection system, to prevent something like that from happening. Ishikawa, Ito and Hirano started the year as the top 3 in Japan. These 3 have a huge advantage over the others because they have huge points from playing the WTTC 2018.
Your results from the previous year have a strong bearing on where you start, yet they state in the document that they'll look at results from the current year only. In this sense, the system is actually far from fair.

I don't think there's one best solution, but I can see the argument for having a round robin format to determine the strongest. OTOH, the Olympics is single elimination and players have to deal with the added pressure. So having multiple selection tournaments from now until the Olympics I think is pretty good. That none of the Tokyo Olympians made it to the semi-finals is actually good because it illustrates the competition for making the Paris Olympic Team is fierce. There are also interesting story lines. Will the All Japan Champion, Mima Ito, even make the team? Can Miyu Nagasaki sustain or surpass her current level in the next selection tournament? Who will join Harimoto on the men's team? ...Etc. I did not, however, like the scheduling of this tournament being sandwiched in between T-League playoffs and Singapore Smash.
Harimoto says while the new selection system is unfavorable for high-ranked players, he understands the reasons behind it, that if you lose at the qualifier, you won't be able to win at the Olympics, that despite the even more hectic schedule, he will try his best to cope with it.
"Honestly, I feel this tournament is more important." Harimoto reveals it was a very long, bitter period after Tokyo 2020, being bothered by lower back pain before the All-Japan 2022 but has finally won a singles title, though nothing glorious, he feels relieved. "I'm truly glad my game is back." "When I didn't have much momentum, many players made bold statement[Togami?] and the unease made me feel really pitiful." His parents telling him every day "if you don't think of yourself as inferior, then you won't make it for the next Olympics" renews his passion. "I once claimed 'this is my era' or something along the line but everyone makes mistakes. I will play with the mindset of a challenger down the road."

It turns out Nagasaki approached her first coach Hitomi Muramori in her hometown for guidance at the end of 2021/beginning of 2022. Muramori reveals that she doesn't have a fixed coach, unlike the big 4, Ito(Taisuke Matsuzaki), Ishikawa(her mom Kumi Ishikawa officially, but Ryusuke Karube de facto), Hirano(Zhang Cheng), and Hayata(Daisuke Ishida). Meeting her again after such a long time, and feeling her resolve for Paris 2024, she has decided to assist her as much as possible.
Ito: "From the practice about 3 days ago, she felt that she couldn't hit the ball as hard as expected. "I didn't know how to score, and the (tactics) was ambiguous. It felt strange that my opponent was scoring more and more. My legs stopped and I stopped thinking. I laughed myself. It’s a strange feeling, it’s my first time feeling like this.”

JTTA should make it a priority to get both Miyus into WTT events. One reason is to get the experience. Another is to get them into the top 50 so they would be automatically entered into the Grand Smash events. WTT plans to have 4 Grand Smash events each year and the money can be pretty significant. Here is the payout at the Singapore Smash :
WINNER 100,000 USD
FINALIST 60,000 USD
SEMI-FINALIST 30,000 USD
QUARTER-FINALIST 22,500 USD
ROUND OF 16 15,000 USD
ROUND OF 32 10,000 USD
ROUND OF 64 5,000 USD

Kihara worked on her FH before the All-Japan 2022. Hirano says "I faltered at the rallies. I wish I could've put more thoughts into it and stuck it out." Ishikawa says "basically can't win" against Hayata but "she could get hold of the match flow here and there" and later wrote on Instagram that her ankle is fine.

I wonder how Harimoto feels about his statements on the selection system, foreign players, and CNT players after his first round exit at Smash Singapore 2022? Perhaps Harimoto(R64) and Togami(R64) should give up their WTTC spots to Uda and Morizono who have reached R32?
Quoting Ito's statement on the selection system as well for future reference. She doesn't look "physically and mentally tired" to me, which she keeps mentioning throughout the interview, at Smash Singapore 2022?

Miyu Nagasaki has been promoted to the Japanese National Team. Previously she was a candidate for it. Miwa Harimoto is now listed as a national team candidate.
Miu Hirano has decided not to renew with Nippon Life in T-League in order to focus on Paris 2024 ( https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/f5426ed2148f4ee45a68369261f9c8ca501bb9b5" rel="nofollow - https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/f5426ed2148f4ee45a68369261f9c8ca501bb9b5 ). She says she wants to change her environment. She's had a rough start to the year with getting Covid during the All Japan. She was ousted by Kihara at the 1st Paris Selection Tournament. But she's known as a hard worker so can't count her out.
Asian Games Qualifier starts in 8 days so double Miyu don't have much time to rest and prepare.

Correction. Paris 2024 Qualifier #2(2022/9/3-4) and Asian Games 2022 Qualifier(2022/4/9-10) are separate. The confusion arose because the two qualifiers were merged(2022/7/16-17) at the beginning. See timeline below.
Women's Hashimoto and Kato of Group A, Ishikawa and Namba of Group B are out. Kihara, Ito, Sato and Hirano make the WT of Asian Games.
Men's Yoshiyama of Group A, Yokotani of Group B are out. M. Yoshimura and Matsushita make the MT of Asian Games. Oikawa, Sone and Togami will duke it out tomorrow to fill the remaining 2 spots.

Catching up on video replay, I'm not surprised Hirano (new coach?) beat Ishikawa, but 4-0, 11-3 in the 4th? And Ishikawa also loses to Sato 2-4. Sato barely beats Yurika Nanba 4-3. Poor Hashimoto, she just missed out on 2021 WTTC, and now she's in the same group as defense destroyer Mima Ito.

How were these players selected? I assume Hayata and Harimoto are already in somehow and that Uda had no way to show his true level in all this?

Yes, Hayata and Miwa's brother have already qualified for singles and team events by winning the 2022 LION CUP TOP32. The http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91479&PID=1124892&title=jtta-asian-games-2022-qualifier-4-910#1124892" rel="nofollow - top 2-8 finishers were invited to play in this one, but Niwa and Ueda turned it down. Togami, M. Yoshimura, Matsushita and Kato were selected by recommendation.
On the 8th, Nagasaki and Shinozuka withdrew and replaced by Namba and Yoshiyama. On the 9th, Arinobu withdrew and not replaced.
The list of players was published on 3/15 and Uda's match with Boll was at 21:00 on 3/14. Too late to change, perhaps?
It's not necessarily a bad thing, as Uda made up his mind about playing the Bundesliga after the Lion Cup ended. The Asian Games 2022(9/10-25) and WTTC 2022(9/30-10/9, originally 4/17-26) will be held back-to-back now. Since he won't be playing in either, he can focus on the Bundesliga.

Yes, looks like Miu Hirano is making all the right moves. Changed sponsors to Kinoshita Group (so I assume she'll be with Abyell along with Kihara and Ishikawa?). Now seen coached by her former coach, Rui Nakazawa:

Kihara 4-2 Ito Ito is out of the singles race. G4 was the turning point. Kihara managed to get past Ito's serve and Kihara's advantage in the rallies sealed Ito's fate. Hirano 4-2 Sato Winner between Kihara and Hirano will join Hayata and play in the singles event of Asian Games 2022.
Togami 0-1, 1-1, 3-1, 3-3, 4-3 Oikawa Togami will finish at least 2nd now that he's taken 1 game. Togami will finish 1st now that he's taken 2 games. Togami's nets and edge hits in G7 did it. M. Togami: Should've tagged along. Uda: Told ya. Niwa & Ueda: Why do you think we chose to skip it?
It might sound crazy to contemplate right now, but Ito might not make 2024. Between Hayata, Nagasaki, Harimoto, and Kihara, there is enough competition. Ito's biggest advantage is that it is only 2 years away. But a lot can happen in 2 years.
For Ito, not winning Lion Cup hurts a little, but not making Asian Games singles hurts a lot, considering she refuses to play the T.League.
For Hirano, reaching the QF would put her on an equal footing with Sato, and reaching the SF would put her even above Hayata. The biggest problem for her right now is her world ranking.

Congratulations to both Yoshimura and Hirano. Haven't watched it yet but Hirano winning 4-0 is quite the statement. Changing her environment has already really paid off.
We've got a long road ahead of us, but so far HH looking good to take 1 spot with the other 2 up for grabs. Kihara is really on the rise making a statement by beating Mima Ito. And now after a rough start to the year, Hirano takes a singles spot next to HH at the Asian Games.

Just finished watching Hirano vs. Kihara. Kihara never looked comfortable from the very beginning. She actually made some fantastic points the 1st 3 games. She normally is very vocal when she makes these points, but I noticed she was silent this time. Maybe she was tired from all the tournaments she's been playing, or maybe she was a bit spooked by seeing coach Nakazawa on the opposing bench. Miu Hirano turned into Wonder Woman in game 4 with an 11-1 beat down. Even when Kihara tried to exploit Hirano's wide forehand with her backhand punch, Hirano was ready for it. So Hirano beats Ishikawa 4-0, 11-3 in the 4th and now Kihara 4-0, 11-1 in the 4th..... what a way to announce her arrival to her new T-League teammates .

It took Hirano long enough to realize that http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91514&PID=1125240&title=2022-wtt-doha-events-03-1331#1125240" rel="nofollow - it has nothing to do with skills .
It's been a while to see Hirano mention self-confidence and winning attitude. Hirano: If I could play like that, I could compete with CNT players. As I played a match that made me think I could win, I plan to win the Asian Games.
Kihara says she had always won and played like usual mentally and tactically but Hirano pulled off a remarkable strategy and she just broke down like that. On Ito, she took the initiative in serve and 3rd ball as planned, and it was great she came out on top in BH-to-BH exchanges.
Ito admits "complete defeat". Both of them are in good form and Kihara is on top in serve, receive and rally. She praises Kihara has become stronger and her odds are increasing when playing CNT players, Hayata and the like and it wouldn't be strange for her to lose in straight games. Rather, it would've been unbelievable if she won.
The Executive Committee has agreed to the following recommendations:
Total removal of the “initial points”
In 2020, a transition phase was implemented to adapt the Ranking to the new WTT events’ structure. Thus “initial points” were introduced, adding a fixed number of points to the best eight results gained; the initial value was 80 per cent of a player’s total points in December 2020.
Due to Covid-19 and the difficulty to organise events, the “initial points” were maintained for a longer period and reduced at a slower pace. As of January 2022, they had been reduced to 20 per cent.
The total number of events in 2021 and 2022 has afforded players the opportunity to gain ranking points. Removing the “initial points” allows players who performed well in recent tournaments to climb the listings and gain entry to higher tier events.
Extension of the validity of all points gained during 2021 senior events
Considering the remaining challenges to travel and compete, as well as the limited number of top-tier events, it has been decided that points awarded at 2021 senior events have their validity extended and shall expire at the earliest on 2023 – week one. The final duration regarding these points will be determined by a resolution of the WRWG before Sunday 1st January 2023.
Restriction of the number of youth events counting towards the senior ranking
Accounting for the fact that on average, youth players have competed in more events than senior players this year and last, only a maximum of four youth events shall count towards a youth player on the senior ranking; this will be reviewed by the WRWG on or before Sunday 1st January 2023.
The changes will come into effect as and from the “2022 ITTF Table Tennis World Ranking – Week 18”; available on Tuesday 3rd May here.
End of the transition phase from 2020 December ITTF World Ranking and removal of the “initial points from the rankings.
(page 5) Validity of 2021 Senior events exceptionally extended so that no event expires before the 31st of December 2022. Final duration of the points to be determined before 1st of December 2023.
(page 6) Exceptionally restricted the number of non-Senior events that can count for the Senior ranking of a player to the best four (4). To be reviewed before 1st of January 2023.
(page 9) Added Qualifying points to WTT Star Contender Doubles competitions.

The total removal of initial points will really shake up the rankings. I think Darko and Truls will make the top 10. Qiu Dang, Kallberg, LJH, should get good bumps as well. LGY, WCT, Falck, and Koki Niwa I think will drop significantly. On the women's side, WYD should move up to 4, HH to 5, and Mima to 6. I think Han Ying, Kihara, YXX, Liu Weishan, Jia Nan Yuan, Shin Yubin, Kuai Man should get good bumps. I think FTW, CXT, CIC, Miu Hirano, Hitomi Sato, He Zhuojia will drop significantly.
The biggest problem is that this year is looking really poor for Senior Pro Tournaments..... just a few Feeder and Contender tournaments remaining on the event calendar. After the Singapore Smash, there has not been any other Smash events scheduled, and there hasn't been a single WTT Champions tournament at all. Hopefully, this changes; otherwise, this year is looking really bad except for the World Teams Championship.

Edit: Looks like zeio fixed it to show actual projected rank.
For those observing this thread, zeio's post is a sampling of just the top 100 so some will not necessarily end up with the above rank. It's where they would rank if only looking at the top 100. For example, Zhu Yuling, who will end up with zero points, won't end up in the 90s. Actually, I don't think she'll be ranked because it looks like you have to have at least 1 point. Also, some currently out of the top 100 will jump into the top 100. For example, Kuai Man is currently at 102 with with 746 points. Her Initial Points (136) will go away leaving her with 610 points so she should end up in the low 30s.

Fixed(sort of) the Week #18 ranking. Went through 754 places for men and 630 places for women. The points for recent events are listed above the initial points and that messed up the calculations, requiring an extra step of processing. Same thing for those without any initial points. Restriction on youth events is still not accounted, so the junior players with more than 4 youth events are off.

Vindicated? Far from it. Hayata is still the biggest "loser" here. After putting in so much work in 2021, what has she got in return? She is vindicated in the sense that she is now recognised as one of the best 2 players in Japan, the other one is Ito. She didn't get the recognition she deserved back in 2019 because of her low ranking. Should have been an automatic selection for the Japanese team back in 2019.

She may be OFFICIALLY the highest-ranked now, but to be recognized as one of the best 2? Not that easy. The standard now is far higher than it was in 2019.
She needs more titles. That's why I listed them in my last post.

Not to discount Kasumi's past achievements, but her 2019 World Champion is Mixed Doubles WC - silver with Yoshimura. More recently, HH is the 2021 Mixed Doubles World Champion - silver with Miwa's brother. HH is also 2021 Women's Doubles WC - silver with Mima Ito. Hina also has the best winning percentage against Cnt players ( out of all Japan women's players) I think.
She was also the T league MVP with the best winning percentage in the previous year. She also achieved first place in this year's trial as well.
Apart from Ito, I don't think there is any japanese player better than Hina at the moment. You are welcome to prove me wrong. Maybe the 2 miyus would get close to her level in the near future.

I get what you're saying, but the JNT has a distinctly different perspective on hierarchy. In the https://jtta.or.jp/national/womens" rel="nofollow - latest national team roster(2022/04/04) , the order still goes like this: 1. Ito 2. Ishikawa 3. Hayata 4. Hirano 5. Kihara 6. Sato 7. Nagasaki
The criteria for the order is not entirely clear. In the Regulation Handbook, article 27(see page 4-5, " https://jtta.s3.ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/11203815/20200616_kitei03_1.pdf" rel="nofollow - 第 27 条(NT、JNT 及び HNT 選手の選出及び手順) ") lists the selection and procedure of NT, JNT and HNT players but nothing on the order. After years of following it, all I can tell is that the order is not solely/necessarily dependent on world ranking, dan ranks, recent results at All-Japan Championships, etc.
If going by number of titles, then Kasumi, who is 8 years older, definitely wins. But in terms of recent performance, I really can't think of any measure that puts Kasumi ahead of HH. I will give credit to Kasumi for playing HH exceptionally well at Top32 losing 9-11 in the 7th.
BTW, by saying HH is better now, I don't want to disparage in any way Kasumi either professionally or personally. She's had a good career and is loved by table tennis fans throughout Japan and rightfully so. She was on a tour in April promoting table tennis throughout all of Japan to young children.
