Quote World Table Tennis is excited to announce the hosting of two marquee events in China, which will be delivered after the Chengdu 2022 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals.

From 19 to 23 October, with USD$800,000 prize money on offer, WTT Champions Macao will gather the Top 30 men and women stars from the https://www.ittf.com/ittf-table-tennis-world-ranking/" rel="nofollow - ITTF World Table Tennis Rankings published on 23 August 2022 and two wildcards.

The lineup for WTT Champions Macao is sure to have fans excited, with China's best players leading the charge. The event will also see inaugural WTT Champions Men's Singles winner Tomokazu Harimoto chasing back-to-back titles in Macao. Meanwhile, the likes of Sweden's Truls Moregard and Brazil's Hugo Calderano will light up Infinity∞Arena in a bid for WTT Series glory. In the Women's Singles, after Singapore Smash and WTT Champions European Summer Series 2022, China's top seeds will be looking to add to their title collection. Standing in their way will be Japan's Mima Ito, Austria's Sofia Polcanova and Puerto Rico's Adriana Diaz.

This will be the last opportunity for players to earn ranking points and qualify for the next event of the 2022 WTT Series, WTT Cup Finals Xinxiang.

From 27 to 30 October, the WTT Cup Finals Xinxiang will provide the stage for the best 16 men and women players to battle it out to be crowned champions and for USD$1,000,000 prize money.

Both events will feature men's and women's competitions held simultaneously, with only a main draw knockout phase, played on just one table, and equal prize money awarded to men and women players.

The entry deadline and hence the world ranking used should be on 20 September 2022. The one they will use was after the end of ETTC. What do we need the handbook for if they don't follow the rules?

Quote To slightly compensate for the restrictions and also to lure players in order to have a competitive playing 32, organisers have hiked the prize money on offer.

While most WTT Champions tournaments offer a prize purse of $500,000, the Macao tournament’s prize purse is $700,000. There’s a significant bump in money for playing in the opening rounds (Rd of 32, 16). For some context, the WTT in Budapest which was held in July this year offered $4,250 for playing in Rd of 32 and $6,500 for the Rd of 16. Macao on the other hand is offering $7,250 for Rd of 32 and $10,000 for Rd of 16, something that is unprecedented.

“Just playing the first round guarantees players $7,250. That’s a great lure but when you take into consideration the effort it’s going to take to get there, you understand why,” Sathiyan said.

Thought Jeon Jihee is also "injured" hence she got benched almost the entire time? Guess that was just a "punishment" after losing to Ni lol

I doubt benching. Maybe only 2 teams in the world that would do that today, and Korea is not one of them.

Players playing injured or going to tournaments injured is very common.
Whether the player wants to play on while injured or not has many factors. WTTTC isn't worth it.
If it was Macao where so many points and cash is up for grabs, it would make those sacrifices a lot more acceptable.

Most first world TT teams does travel with medical staff and it would be a more educated gamble on risk vs reward.

In a way it is sad. I have seen a player downing double or triple the dose of pain killers prior to a match, as she felt that if she gave a walk over, it will pull her back a lot. The goal was to get to the next round and she will be okay to get knocked out after that.

The life of professional athletes and injuries.... aint for the faint hearted

I don't understand why Hayata's spot doesn't go to Miu Hirano.  Hirano is much higher rated and adding her does not break the 4 player member association limit with Hayata not attending.

Likely has to do with visa, quarantine and/or availability.

On another note, the TTWR they're using for the Player List is at least WK39 2022/9/27(still not WK38 2022/9/20 according to the handbook) instead of WK34 2022/8/23(as stated in the http://mytabletennis.net/Forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=92273&PID=1131758&title=wtt-champions-macao-2022-10-1923#1131758" rel="nofollow - original article ).

1/2 host wildcards go to LGY and CXT. The remaining wildcard will likely not be used now that we have 32 players for both MS and WS.

looking forward to this. The men's bottom right bracket looks pretty brutal.
I can't keep track of all the debates on here about the japanese women's team rankings (and don't wish to completely derail things in that direction), but does anything jump out at people from the bracket as potential for one of them beating a top 4 from CNT ?

Posted By: zeio
Date Posted: 10/18/2022 at 7:36am
Top JNT women beating top CNT women here? Unlikely. The odds of Harimoto beating top CNT men are higher, if he can get past the European men.

Ito and Kihara will potentially meet in R16 and the winner will meet CM in QF, whom has never lost to either. Lily, OTOH, could give Ishikawa a run for her money.

Very good opportunity for CXT to break into the top 10.  She only has 7 results so far so you can add full points from this tournament to get her net gain.  I can see her getting to the QF at a minimum (will need to beat Adrian Diaz and winner of Han Ying/JJH) which would net her 175 points to just barely make it into the top 10.

Ishikawa has the best draw of the 3 Japanese women... no CNT, no JNT until QF, but as zeio noted she will have a rematch with Lily who played her exceptionally well but lost.

It'll be interesting to see if HT can make it to the SF as his bigger challenge has been playing the non Chinese as odd as that sounds.  Hard to peak again after WTTTC, but we'll see.  I'd also like to see LYJ do well in this tournament.  He's got a decent draw until the QF where there's a good chance he meets a CNT player (winner of LJK/LGY).  He should be fresh physically not having played the WTTTC.

It occasionally works but just not with enough consistency.  She's also getting driven back too often.  On the positive side, I do think her serve quality has gotten considerably better vs. say a year or so ago.

On a separate note, between games and on timeouts is fine, but the occasional 3 second musical outbursts between points is distracting.

We get the expected Ito/Kihara match up.  Mima Ito gets a shot at revenge for her loss at Japan's Asian Games Trial earlier this year.  Winner gets a shot at Chen Meng (most likely).

Quarter 2 of WS is wide open. If Ishikawa can't advance, then she can retire.

Quarter 3 of MS is now owned by Europe. Harimoto back to Miwa's brother.

Option 1: I got outcoached by Coach Lebrun.
Option 2: Isn't our secret plan still to troll JNT by advancing Ishikawa like CM pulling out at the ESS Star Contender?

Congrats to Jia Nan Yuan and coach Lebrun.  First Ito and now WMY... just fantastic wins by JNY!

The player coaches are doing some really solid work here.  Pitch for Jha, JWJ for Jeon Jihee, and now Lebrun for JNY.   Old, washed-up coaches should fear for their jobs.

Harimoto always does better against other close table players (including CNT) who feed him with more predictable balls than the European players who generally play farther away from the table and have a huge variety in serve/receive patterns and loop styles.

His style which is more speed based is more susceptible to these kind of rhythm changes compared to spinnier players like LYJ and CNT in general.

The  interesting thing about this generalization is that Falck is a close to the table player who basically out looped Harimoto backhand-to‐ backhand.   Harimoto struggles against players who are willing to take risks to attack him, especially on the backhand.  He needs to learn to impose his own attach earlier and more often and not just when he es in trouble.

To me Falck attempts to play close table but due to his height and size really he's taking the ball at distances more like a mid distance player with pretty big strokes. So at least from Harimoto's POV the timing and speed/spin would be very different from what his normal training partners would be giving him.

Imo if he spends a few seasons in Europe, that would really help him get used to the European loops (which are not necessarily faster or higher quality, just different timings).

Also his BH chiquita has great speed but not so good spin unlike Lin Yun Ju which also means that it requires even more accurate recognition of the incoming spin...and there's again a huge amount of serve variety among the European players.

On top of the issue of playing against European players, mindset/doubt is another problem that has been bothering Miwa's brother, as he touched on in the interview with Butterfly( https://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91046&PID=1127361&title=the-end-of-the-harimoto-dream#1127361" rel="nofollow - 張本智和インタビュー(後編) ).

When playing lower-ranked players, he tends to cover up whenever his FH doesn't work in his favor, leading him to play safe on his BH. The FH issue has been alleviated somewhat with the help of Dong Qiwen but the tendency towards playing safe was still apparent in the match against Falck, where he used 貼 on the BH when he should've have taken a step back and used 撕/帶. In the end, it comes down to the mindset, which affects his stance and footwork.

First time I watched Pucar play. Was impressed by his game plan, performance and fair play! His tomahawk and BH serves were effective and didn’t allow LYJ to execute his Chiquita as well as usual.

Fortunately, Lin found a way to win. Good timeout at 9:8 in the third game and his long serves in the fifth game were crucial imo.

According to Bobrow Lin did the interview in English for the first time.

A very respectable match by Kanak.  Outmatched physically, he made the most of what he excels at: control game, placement (putting FZD in awkward positions), and carefully picking his opportunities to attack with a decent success rate given the opponent.

WTTTC was all about Tomokazu Harimoto, but this tournament has some nice surprises as well.  Jia Nan Yuan beating WMY.  Alexis Lebrun beating LJK.  Bernie Szocs beating CM.  And we're not done yet so who knows what's in store.  The gap between China and the rest of the world is closing.

One other interesting thing is how well player coaches are doing:  Lebrun, Pitchford, and self-coach Szocs :).

I keep telling my high-level coach friend that Qiu Dang has all the tools to beat Ma Long, he just needs to put them together.  Superior backhand and the ability to take it down the line - everything starts from there.
