The 2023 edition will take place from 11 to 19 March, with the main draw starting on a Saturday - instead of Monday in the first edition - to attract more fans to see the top paddlers compete in the opening weekend. Organisers are in discussion for the venue of the event.
The second Saturday will be billed as “Semifinal Saturday”, which will see two semi-final sessions, with each featuring one of the men’s or women’s doubles finals.
Action on the Infinity Arena - the main competition hall - will see five matches per session during the early rounds. Meanwhile, the viewer experience has been improved in the second competition hall with two more show tables, meaning more matches for the fans to watch.
...
More mixed doubles pairs in the 2023 event
WTT has confirmed that the mixed doubles draw will increase from 16 pairs to 24 pairs for the 2023 event.
It will also increase the number of seeds in the singles competitions from eight to 16 players. This means that the top 16 players will not be drawn to play against one another in first-round matches, allowing better chances for top paddlers to advance into the later stages.
Yeah, puzzling that Zhang Rui got a WC but not Miwa?
Yeah, I don't think Miwa would turn down the money/ranking points so it's sad that she did not get a wildcard or nomination.
She really should have played the Contender Durban 2023 where she really had a good chance to ensure a spot in the Singapore Smash. But short of that, WTT should have given her a nomination. A while back, apacible and I discussed this:

Lin Shidong's got some tough test(s) straight away. First match against Karlsson and if he wins he'd likely face Ma Long the next round. Rough draw for ML as well as the #2 seed, having to face the winner of Karlsson and LSD in R32 assuming he beats Duda.

I see Vitor Ishiy is into the main draw after his loss, was their 1 random spot left?
He played Alfred Dela-Pena from New Zealand in the first round and Vitor won. Alfred was invited to go to Singapore 1 week earlier so had to confirm and fund raise to go.
No other sport runs like this, poor Alfred coaching little kids one day and 3 days later in Singapore with no preparation.
I think group play would be better for the qualification system. Then knockout for the top 2 from each group
just a long way to travel for one game of knockout.

Yes, he must have received the lucky loser spot. I count 55 players in Main Draw list + 8 qualifiers + 1 lucky loser = 64.

It was the same last year. 3 days of qualifying + 10 days of main draw, with 1 day of rest in between (on Thursday). I think a day of rest is intentional to give the qualifiers time to recover and prepare for the main draw.

Filus surely is going to get a suspension for that, right?
Aruna was seriously thrown off at the end of set 4 and beginning of set 5 due to some brutal bounces (edge and net balls). But those constant breaks in set 5 really helped him regain his composure. Aruna timeout > side change at 5 > Filus timeout > towel break. There was like 5 mins of breaktime within a 5 point span and Aruna came out of it swinging.

Time wasting. YLC kept delaying on Lebrun's turn to serve by wandering off, wiping the table etc. Ended up losing and looking badly even with all the service faults against Lebrun...

What a racket toss by Filus after losing to Aruna. What was he thinking? Just missed a photographer in the head. That is as bad as it gets.
Posted By: turbozed
Date Posted: 03/12/2023 at 5:56am
Looked like it was excessive stalling during serve receive. Kept on putting his hand up at last second when Lebrun was about to serve. After a few of them got a yellow. Kept on doing it and got a red. After getting a red, he was still finding points in the match here and there to stall. All it accomplished was to motivate Lebrun further it seems.
Kilian Ort might be the only survivor if Dang doesnt get through. Who would have thought...

These are higher level tournaments than what he usually competes in on the tour.

This is one of the worst paddle throws. I did not watch the whole game, I do not know what caused it. Is it somehow because the match got a little personal?

Despite that Alex Lebrun usually rushes to serve, somehow YLC got a yellow and a red cards for their matches. It is quite rare to see a red card during a match. Need to watch that match too. A lot of people said that YLC stalled a little too much and he deserved the red card.

In this case I do think YLC deserves the red card as both players were at the table and YLC just ignored Alexis being in his service stance.
However, this is a bit of a gray area that I think ITTF should address. In tennis player's play at the reasonable pace of the server. However, there is no such rule in table tennis. So it looks to be at the umpire's discretion. Alexis is notorious for being a fast server sometimes giving his opponents almost no time to prepare. There has to be a balance between giving the opponent time to be ready and not allowing the receiver to delay the game.

This is true that it's a let if the receiver is not ready, but I'm speaking more of about the pace of the game ... should it be at the server's pace or the receiver's. I can see either pace being abused and the umpire will have to decide who is abusing this. I noticed this is being talked about more since Alexis has been serving. I've seen too many cases where he's serving too fast, but at the same time I have seen receivers waste too much time.
