87 days until the U.S. Open and the USATT hasn't figured out a schedule yet.  You'd think after years of putting on the Open and Nationals they'd have it figured out by now.  They should know a year in advance where their 2 major tournaments are, and what the schedule is.  Hard for players to plan (and get excited about) to attend the event.

I was just thinking the same thing.

I don't understand why someone from the USATT can't pick up the phone and call the XYZ convention center and ask if they can book the 2023 US Open December 17th-22nd.  Then they say we'll use the same schedule we did last year.  In 10 minutes they will know when and where the 2023 Open will be and the schedule.  They could do the same for the Nationals.

I put on many events (concerts, volleyball tournaments and lip sync contests) in California for 20+ years and always knew what facilities I was using and when.  Everything was booked 13 months in advance.  I could then announce at my current event when we would be back the following year.  It wasn't that hard.  I signed the contracts, but didn't need to put down the deposit until a few months in advance.  In some facilities I didn't need a deposit, I just paid in full the night of the event.

If it will help anyone to make up their mind about attending,  I would like to announce that mjamja and the Goose Island Traveling TT club have booked a campsite just outside Ontario for the week of Dec 15 to 21.  The pure entertainment value of watching me play should be more than enough to make anyone want to attend this year's open.  The pathos of an old man trying to capture the glory that eluded him in his youth.  The slap-stick comic relief of a guy fighting a barrier just to make his way into the court.  The intriguing mystery of where in the world my playing technique could have originated.  The gripping drama and suspense wondering if I will drop dead from exhaustion before the end of the match with an 11 yr old energizer bunny clone.  And finally the heart warming joy of hearing a hearty "Cho Ho Ho Ho" as the would be Santa pulls off one last magnificant shot before going down in defeat.  Hollywood offers nothing that comes close.

So make your plans now and come to see the greatest show on Gerflor (or some such rubber mat).  Look forward to seeing you all there.

Mark - Who is stll working on deals with several TT companies to not use their equipment at the Open.

There will only be 84 tables total for this years U.S. Open. On the first day there will only be 64 tables available for use.

I sure hope they limit the entries to about 600 players.  If they have 750 like the last Open the tournament will be a disaster.  I have the feeling that the USATT doesn't care if it's a disaster as long as they get our money.  It could be that the poor location will limit the entries.

1st let me say I have nothing to do with the USATT , I love this game . All I see is bitching , if someone think they can do a better job, go run for the CEO office . I play a few other sports , Pong player are some of the stingiest people I seen . My daughter plays HS sport , parents will bring drink and snacks for everyone not just their kids .
If USATT announced a place , more bitching , it’s to far for this person , it’s too expensive for the other , there is always something. Remembered they cannot please everyone, when was the last CEO bring the WTTC to the USA ? This sport cannot grow because everyone has their own agenda. I happen to think USATT is better then before , I might not agree with everything, but I’m not going to bitch about a sport I love

1. "All I see is bitching , if someone think they can do a better job, go run for the CEO office" It's not an elected position, in theory they are an employee reporting to the board.
2. "Pong player are some of the stingiest people I seen" Agreed.
3. "Remembered they cannot please everyone, when was the last CEO bring the WTTC to the USA ?" I am not sure what this sentence means. The CEO who brought the Worlds to the US was not the current CEO, it was the previous one.
4. "I happen to think USATT is better then before" I would love to see how you think the USATT is improving.

I could put on a better Open or Nationals than the USATT.

At last years open they rented a facility that only had enough room for about 550 players, yet they let 750 players enter, knowing it would be a mess.  It was the worst organized tournament that I have ever played.  I emailed the USATT and asked how many tables they were going to use.  They told me that they didn't know.  How can you not know how many tables you're going to use at a major event.  The current location for this years is only big enough to hold 64-84 tables.  If you ask the USATT if they will limit the entries to 600 players, they will tell you that they don't know, another lie.  They will let 750 players enter and we will have another mess.  The only thing that might save them is the poor location that might limit the entries.  The disadvantage of trying to get as much money as you can, even if it means a bad experience for the players is that in the future players will not want to donate or help the USATT.  Give the players a good experience and they will want to help.

With over 920 entries have they added tables.  Vince posted earlier that they were only going to use 84 tables.  If they don't use over 100 tables it's going to be worse than last years Open.  I'm skipping the Open and doing the Veterans Tour 3 days prior to the Open in the same facility.  With only 104 entries we should be okay.

I've heard that the tournament is running on schedule and everyone seems to be enjoying the tournament.  I think Mark, Heavyspin and Vince are there and probably some others.  Any comments or results.  I'm sure all of our members are still undefeated.

Major upset alert.  Heavyspin won his men's over 60 RR as the #2 seed without losing a game.
Mark, the #3 seed in his 60 RR went undefeated beating the A & B 2000+ players.

I am noticing many defaults in the tournament.

Looks like everyone in Larry's group defaulted.
Should Mark change his username to sandbaggermjamja LOL ?

Rant about the streaming (again). How many years in a row can you have the same problems? Video stutters, or freezes, or it updates so slowly it looks like a slide show.

Would like to compliment the staff on how the tournament is running.  In my case everything has been on time and there has usually been an open table (sometimes shared by 4) for warming up before the events. Tables are actually only in 2 rooms (right across from each other) and most are in 1 room.  Limiting entries really seems to have worked.

Got to have a long chat with Heavyspin.  I strongly encouraged him to bring his wonderful since of humor back to the forum.

I have O65 tomorrow.  Need to get at least 50 more rating points to make up what I will most likely lose in the U1900 and U1800 on Tue and Wed.

I think that was a first for me - a walkover round robin group of 4. Don't understand why the no shows. The scheduling has pretty much been on time.

I'm not playing well at all. Perhaps I haven't recovered from my long flight. It seems to take longer these days to unravel from being an oversized contortionist in my window seat for 5+ hours.

I played as well as I have in a while a few weeks ago at the Teams. When I returned from DC, I had a mild case of covid, tested positive for 10 days. That certainly affected my lack of practice heading into this competition.

There seems to many players playing at their very best.  I see lots of big number upsets.  Usually the upsets are from fast improving kids, but many of the upsets have come from veteran adults.  I've heard that the tournament is running very well.  Why the difference between this years Open and last years?
Is it just more tables (how many) or something else?

Live Stream is up on the https://www.youtube.com/@USATableTennis" rel="nofollow - USATT Youtube Channel

No action on Table 1 yet. Table 2 is suffering still from yesterday's stuttering.

And it will continue as long as whoever is running USATT mostly/only care/cares about self-promotion than actually about the organization and the sport. We are the laughingstock of the table tennis world! Utter incompetence over decades....

You'd think with all the comments and live chat messages mentioning the "slide show" quality of the video that someone would do something about it....but of course not. Nobody cares.

No lag on table 1.  You can watch table 2 in the background from table 1.

Lily had ALMOST found the solution (chop block...) - but Amy saved 3 match points in game 6.

Please note that after taking my deductions for the daily parking fee and the outrageous price of a Coke and chips each day at the convention center I fully expect to be getting a refund from the IRS.

As for sandbagging, I still have to play the U1800 tomorrow.  I could easily lose 150 points to an 850 player playing 1900, a 1100 player playing 2000, and a 1500 player playing 2050.  I have already seen these kind of upsets happening.  It would be just my luck to get such a draw when I have a chance to get my first ever 1900 rating.

Mark - Who if he was smart would simply default tomorrow and take his rating points home.  But no one ever accused mjamja of being smart so we will just have to see how it turns out.

I would say that it was the best run one that I have been to so far.
