Filus got a spot?  No suspension or any disciplinary action for his racket throwing that almost hit a court side photographer?

Oh sweet, can't wait for Harimoto vs. LSD!  Alexis vs. Truls and Dima vs. Lim Jonghoon are gonna be really interesting as well.  Looking ahead, these first round matchups are actually better than the potential second round matchups.  I mean, the most interesting potential 2nd round matchups are I suppose LYJ vs. Lebrun/Moregard, or Dima/LJH vs. Calderano, or LJK vs. Jorgic?

Yes, and Alexis scored the upset, which is what makes this rematch interesting.  Otherwise one may think Truls is the big favorite which is less interesting.

It's a big challenge but kihara will value matches against the big 4 more, those are her potential opponents in the majors.

Do you guys think jetlag is gonna affect the semifinalists and the finalists, especially those that did well in both Singapore and Xinxiang, A one day break may be hard on them.

Politically incorrect comment. Mittelham = Brittleham.

Despite Ishikawa having a short fuse, Brittleham self-detonates before her.

Fans: Always rooting for you!

Why do I feel like Lily Zhang is overrated relative to her world ranking?  She did so poorly against a chopper in Han Ying and against Hayata.

She is a very good player but she does not have "something" special which could bring her higher.
Services and returns of services: looks average for a top 100 pro
Tactics: looks average
spins: looks average
She can't win matches Vs defenders (and Han Ying is currently the best one)  and she can't follow the speed of most of the Asian players.
Also in such tournaments where you have the very best players, her results are normal (defeats) but the numbers are cruel (5 points a game).

You hit the nail on the head!  Exactly, I too feel like she's lacking the "it" factor that would have elevated her status to an even higher level.  Her services lack variations, as they almost look exactly identical. Just a no-spin or light under spin.  Backhand is consistent in normal drives and opening loop, but they lack the power and speed for the killer shots. Tactics I too agree are beyond predictable.  Serve and open with a backhand loop that yields very little threat.  I think what she needs is strength training and film studies of other top players.  Analyze why they are able to win and try to replicate the same things.

From Ito's expression in the middle game of G1, she is in trouble.
That edge for Ito at 7:6 of G2 tipped the scale in her favor.

Moregard has gotta come up with a way to deal with the Lebrun brothers. Moregard has lost to A Lebrun 2 times in a week.

Quote The Lebrun brothers have gotta come up with a way to deal with Kristian Karlsson, ideally before WTTC 2022 and hopefully by Paris 2024. F Lebrun has lost to him twice already, but took 1 game this time.

Shinozuka is taking his time to acquaint himself with the fast moving big stage, I'm not sure he'll provide any big impact for Japan leading to Paris 2024, maybe in the next Olympic cycle he'll establish himself fully.

There was an interesting point dispute (more of a discussion tbh) at 9-8 of Game 4 between Adriana Diaz and Chen Szu-yu. I think all parties involved (Diaz, CSY, and the umpire) handled the situation really well.

Video Links: Choose any one of them based on your region
  • The video (from WTT Youtube) can be seen https://www.youtube.com/live/RIn4i4S8awU?feature=share&t=9755" rel="nofollow - here and the incident starts at 2:42:35 of the video .
  • TV Tokyo TT Channel also clipped the incident and made it into a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRw7vcKj1js" rel="nofollow - separate video (Japan Geolocked):
  • Bilibili (Chinese Commentary) video link at 1min 35secs : https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1cs4y1N7vy?p=5" rel="nofollow - https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1cs4y1N7vy?p=5

Basically this happened (better to also watch the video I linked above):
CSY's return of Adriana's away-from-the-table punch shot hits the table but there's a discussion as to whether it hits the side or the edge.
  • CSY while pointing finger down: "Touch?"
  • Umpire asks Diaz: "Diaz, Side or Edge?"
  • Diaz towards CSY: "You think touch or side?"
  • Diaz looking towards the big screen to see the replay because she's not sure.
  • Umpire asks Diaz again: "Diaz, Side or touch?"
  • Diaz: "I think side but you decide." (Since you're the umpire)
  • Umpire: "Okay, it's side." Awards point to Diaz 10-8.
A video replay of the point is then shown on the big screen seemingly showing the ball touching the edge.
Diaz immediately tells the umpire to change the score to 9-9 after seeing the replay. "No no no, 9-9" "9-9, sorry" (I was mistaken)
  • This time, the umpire didn't insist on her initial ruling of "side" and was willing to get the opinion of the players. There are times in other similar instances where the umpires are stubborn, deem their call final, and ask the players to play on without giving the players an opportunity to discuss.
  • CSY, the umpire, and Diaz were all willing to have a conversation regarding the point.
  • Diaz was very honest in saying that she wasn't really sure who won the point but her initial impression was that the ball hit the side. Still, she didn't insist it was a side ball and let the umpire make the final call.
  • Diaz was constantly looking at the big screen to see the replay and she seemed more concerned in making sure the point was properly called rather than winning the point.
  • Diaz showed openness and willingness in changing her opinion from "Side" to "Edge" after seeing the replay, even after the umpire had already awarded the point to Diaz.
Under the current rules, the umpire makes the final call of the point in real-time and shouldn't refer to video replay even if it is available. It would be nice if there was an unwritten rule between players that when there is a point dispute, both players agree to refer the the big screen replay (if available) to confirm who really won the point. If the video replay is not conclusive, then the umpire's call will stand. If the video replay in conclusive, both players can agree to overturn the initial call of the umpire.

This could be a make-shift solution until https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaboZ7kntJk" rel="nofollow - TTR (Table Tennis Review) is fully implemented. They https://www.ittf.com/2019/12/10/table-tennis-review-implemented-2019-ittf-world-tour-grand-finals/" rel="nofollow - tested TTR during the 2019 ITTF Grand Finals and the https://www.ittf.com/2021/11/28/electronic-table-tennis-review-system-approved-ittf-board-directors/" rel="nofollow - ITTF Board already approved its use in their meeting during the 2021 WTTC in Houston . However, to this date, I don't think we've seen TTR implemented since the 2019 Grand Finals.

Damn that was bad.  Up 2-1 in games and 5-0, then 9-7 in the 4th set and she loses, followed by a racket toss and a yellow card.  Then up 8-4 in the 5th set and loses 7 straight to lose 8-11.  It's not that Yeon played superbly either, Bruna was missing routine blocks and easy opportunity loops by the end.

Ito and her pimple rubber have no problem with the thomahawk service, she runs into it.
And with Kato, she learned a lot about how to deal with spinny services:))

Like she pointed out, she played well in Macao last year. Many folks thought CNT sandbagged on purpose.

Barring any fantastic run from someone currently ranked below them, Kihara, Hirano, CIC, DHK will likely ALL be Top 16 seeds at WTTC 2023. https://results.ittf.link/index.php?option=com_fabrik&view=list&listid=113&Itemid=288" rel="nofollow - Yang Xiaoxin won't be eligible to participate in the WTTC until April 15, 2026 due to change of citizenship, so her absence will free up a top 16 seed slot.

7 of the Top 8 Women's seeds are likely confirmed (5 CNT members + Ito and Hayata). Only Han Ying's place as a Top 8 seed is up for grabs. Theoretically, all WTTC participating players below Han Ying and until DHK have a chance to overtake Han Ying. There are also several players below DHK such as JJH, SYB, and Szocs, who can mathematically still overtake Han Ying if they do really really well in both the WTT Champions Macao and WTT SCT Bangkok tournaments.

The Men's Seeding Race in the lead up to WTTC 2023 is much more fluid.

CTTA would like LJK to overtake Harimoto so China can secure the top 4 seeds for WTTC.
FZD and WCQ have already secured their Top 4 seeding for the WTTC. The other 2 slots will be a race between Harimoto, ML, LJK, and Calderano. ML and Calderano aren't playing WTT SCT Bangkok so they need to make this WTT Champions Macao tournament count. If ML fails to go at least one round further than Harimoto in Macao, it would guarantee at least one non-Chinese player as a top 4 seed. (either Calderano or Harimoto or both)

The last top 8 seed slot will be a race between Lin Yun-ju, Qiu Dang, Aruna, Lim Jong-hoon, Lin Gaoyuan, and Ovtcharov.

As much as I like Kihara, she's quickly shaping up to be the new Ishikawa in the current singles race - doing well against teammates while being completely toothless against the Chinese. Her game appeared more steady and powerful compared to Ito's at first glance but the more I watch her the more I feel that her style is too reminiscent of the older generation of backhand short-pips Chinese girls (Wang Yue Gu comes to mind). Always relying on that same tempo backhand that the Chinese can rally against all day because she's no Sun Mingyang. Along with Ishikawa, the two of them right now have deprived Hirano and Harimoto of perfect opportunities to shine at two WTT champions events.

Ito and Hayata are definitely the best choices for Olympic singles but neither of them have the level of dominance or stability that Ito ver.2019 had. Combined with Bernadette now officially becoming the player with the highest kill rate against the top Chinese this Olympic cycle, plus Samara having somewhat of a career revival, I think Romania might have an outside chance of upsetting Japan at a team event just like how Germany did in 2016. It will be hard to pull off without a solid third player (Diaconu and Dragoman seem pretty solid though), but Japan might just tip the balance against themselves with their 'wonderful' selection process.

Harimoto countered really dead and LSD is not yet up to Fan Zhendong or Liang Jingkun levels of spin production because he's still a kid really. Once he grows stronger and spins more he'll make less unforced errors, and will become an even scarier player.

This match will show whether https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/topics/soon.25766/post-353370" rel="nofollow - Hayata has truly solved the JJH problem .

Lost focus after 8:3 in G2. Can't afford that at WTTC 2023.

"ML stole a point from Pitchford. LOL"

Is that an actual accusation?

Doesn't look good for LYJ.

Pretty sure the edge ball at 2-1, 8-6 was a side. The ball trajectory went down too. That point really shut Ito out of making a comeback. Then again, she might not even be in R16 if not for her edge ball against Samara. I guess table tennis karma is a b****. Just surprised that Ito did not bother challenging that at all.

LGL: No worries. Liu Yangzi can't play in world title events. We will come up with measures for Szocs and Samara in due time. Everything is going according to plan. Your job is safe, MLin.

LJK vs Jorgic
G2 710, 1412

Jorgic had the early lead in G1, G4 and G5, and multiple games points in G2 and G3. If it were not for all the nets, LJK could've lost in straight games.

On top of South Korean players, from his matches in 2017, LJK's game seems much less threatening against certain European players. Could get dangerous if he gets a poor draw at WTTC 2023.
