Hi,

I know these are pretty difficult, but I've seen a few of them here before so I thought it would be fun.

What would you guys estimate these players ratings to be? Feel free to choose whichever rating system you're familiar with.

I'd say USATT 1900-2000 for the guy in red and 2200+ for the tall blue man.

They did have really short rallies with errors but a lot of spin, and developed strokes

Blue is definitely 2200+. Red may have seen better days but is not far off and might have been 2200+, but is playing around 2000 in that match.

Thanks for the response. Other than the first comment, it was what I expected. Tough to see his actual level, just from that video of course.

I don’t know about the guy in red, but I believe blue is making red look much worse than he is.

Blue has a Swedish rating between 2600-2800. He has won 10 gold medals at the Norwegian national championships. He was close to beating Truls just a few years ago, when Truls already was very good.

To put it further into perspective, Seth Pech lost 0-3 easily to a guy with a similar playstyle as blue in Swedish league, but rated 100-150 lower. I’ve seen blue live a few times now and from what I’ve seen, he makes most 2300-2400 Swedish rated players look like beginners.

What is Seth's rating in Sweden?  Will help give perspective.

I could easily have gone higher with Blue's rating, but I will be honest, I can tell 2200+ from a few things (attacking serves, short pushes) but above 2200+, a lot of stuff you see and rate gets determined by the level of the opposition so I can't confidently tell where someone is beyond that.  You can't easily tell a 2600 chopper when he faces a 2000 looper, but you can tell much more easily when he is facing a 2600 looper.

And yes, to me, red does all the same things blue does, but he clearly does them worse and is prevented from doing them, so there is clearly a rating gap, but again, as you pointed out, the prevention is making red look worse than he really is.  But I can see easily how red is 2400 but is made to look like a 2000 by a certain level of player.

Seths rating when he played here was between 2400-2500.

We played blues team a while ago, my teammate told me about him and the insane wins he had. I found this video, but because I knew his rating I knew he was deceptively good. I didn't get to play him, but two of my teammates did. It was interesting to watch, there wasn't much they could do. This guy reads the game so well and makes players doubt everything they do.

Thanks. That is pretty similar to the US system maybe a bit different but not enough for me to investigate seriously.

I'll go read through the thread momentarily, but though I'd offer some thoughts before I do that.

The guy in blue is really good.  He is clearly not working very hard and is not concerned in the slightest, but still it is impressive how much time he has to take each shot.  A couple of time when he misses an easy ball due to being lazy, he pays a couple of points more seriously and you can see he is good.  Easy 2500.  Maybe more.  If the other guy was closer in playing level, it would be easier to tell.

The guy in red is perfectly competent.  Maybe 2100-ish, maybe better against players of similar level to him.  In this match, he knows he is screwed, so he is probably not playing his best either.  He knows there isn't a damn thing he can do.  The guy in blue can probably bagel him if he focuses.

The way blue shirt's bat sang with every stroke was a good indicator of his level

Pretty good estimate. This is just another video that shows TT levels can be quite deceptive.. in any direction really.

Hi - not to argue and not to dismorale your opinion i wanted to state - actual rating can not be calculated with video without videos from actual competition with those guys who are in USATT rating.
And even after that- one video is not enough!
Even after watching those videos and lightness of motions for man in blue - what I can see - he has pretty good serves and serve receives - but not so good actual start of attack - instead he works good in BH to BH counters- so for example against lefties - he can struggle.
What I mean - this video to analyze is good - but not enough -all those guys who have made some estimates can be right or wrong in about 200 points plus-minus.
It's not bad - he can play in USATT and get that rating after that - then it will be more focused and more precise.
