I don't foresee the income will attract that many high level international players. But definitely do hope to see this expand to incorporate even more teams from other cities

That depends, the owners may be able to pay "out of pocket" for international players and forego a draft pick. We will have to wait and see when the rules are published.

So it's almost like T1 from jtta and the format is like a nba?

The Goose Island Traveling Table Tennis Club is considering becoming an owner in this new league. We have the ability to create a unique situation that would provide a strong incentive for both players and spectators to come to our matches.
We would play our home matches on some of the best picnic tables in the US at some of the finest National Parks. Summer matches would be played at Sequoia and Redwoods National Parks. The promotion slogan would be "Come see the big trees and big time table tennis". Spring and fall matches would be held at Big Bend National Park. "Two paddles for the price of one. Raft the Rio Grande and then watch world class table tennis." would lure in the spectators. Winter matches would be held at Death Valley. There we could promote "No sandpaper, but lots of sand. Enjoy world class table tennis and world class scenery." Of course our team kit would be official Mountain Man Table Tennis Wear featuring hiking cargo pants, long sleeve hiking shirt, hiking boot style table tennis shoes, and the trademark wide brimmed hat.
What do you guys think? Is there a place in this new league for the Goose Island Travelling Table Tennis Club? Let me know what you think.
Mark - Who will be evaluating draft choices on both their TT skills and ability to start a campfire in the rain and cook a good meal over it.

It's for real. Flint Lane is a successful businessman and the owner of the Princeton Pong table tennis club. Let's see how far he can take it.

The "Princeton Revolution" is based in New Jersey (as is the league itself). Maybe in the second half of the season there'll be matches in that region too.
Same for the Pacific Northwest with Seattle and Portland.

Earlier this year (April?) they had a presentation for players interested in the draft that covered some of this information. I forget the numbers but there is some base pay per appearance on the thousand dollar scale plus smaller bonuses for winning games, especially the golden game. There may also have been some pay just for being on a team, but I don't recall that as clearly. I'll see if I can find the information again.

TTBL (which started this weekend, by the way) doesn't allow its players to compete in another league during the same season, so Kanak will probably stay out of this and focus on helping Grenzau once his suspension is over.

Each team is required to have one woman on the roster - it seems 9 were picked, in the following order:
Amy Wang
Matilda Ekholm
Hong Lin
Lily Zhang
Fabiola Diaz
Rachel Sung
Angela Guan
Emily Tan
Ying Wang
So the Texas Smash picked not 1 but 2 women.
What happens if the female player (for example Lily Zhang) isn't available on a matchday?

I like the Golden Game concept of alternating players within a game. I had thought about doing something similar where I play whenever it got too busy.

How did Lei Kou not go first overall or in the first round? There must be a logic underlying the picks that is not transparent to the informed table tennis fan...

I suspect there will still be room to put undrafted players on rosters, especially women.

Lei kou is 35 and on a steep decline.
Posted By: Slowhand
Date Posted: 08/28/2023 at 1:53am
This was a "draft" for promotional purposes only. Clearly not the order in which the players were actually selected by the teams. Players were given the option to limit their availability to only west or only east teams, and there were probably other factors involved as well in putting the rosters together. Koi Lei is the strongest player in the league. I think Carolina might have the strongest roster, led by Enzo Angles and Romain Lorentz with Jeremy Hazin a strong number three if he's in form.

I have no insider knowledge regarding the draft and the following is pure speculation from my side.
I like to think that the players were selected in the order announced in the video. One thing people might have missed is that the Portland Paddlers had the 8th and the 9th pick. They were using a "snake" (?) system, i.e. working their way backwards in Round 2. So you could argue that there is no difference between the 8th and 9th pick.
The decision makers of each team probably picked someone in the first round they have a personal relationship with. In addition, the budget of each team probably is important, e.g. pay and travel costs.
"Players were given the option to limit their availability to only west or only east teams." This surely had a big influence on the draft as mentioned by Slowhand.

Some of the choices and the order of the choices were baffling to say the least. I did hear that some of the players cannot play all the rounds because of having previous commitments to play internationally, so that might have had something to do with some of the strange picks.

The league might have a team tennis type format if the pilot that was shown on ESPN is true to form. So one player will not dominate or win matches in quite the same way as they would in a regular league (I like the Indian league format, but the MLTT pilot seems a bit more in the spirit of team tennis).

Between $1k and $2k per appearance, plus the team is playing for a percentage of a purse each weekend. There will be a Final Four tournament worth quite a bit of money with the winner taking the lions share. At the seasons end there will be individual bonuses paid out to the top point earners. Throw in the possibility for endorsements, players can do all right playing one weekend per month in The MLTT.

Agreed. Similar things are done in team tennis but to be honest, I almost never watch team tennis.
I would have thought the mix the Indian leagues struck was close to ideal but I guess we have to see what happens.

Personally I prefer a 2 table format. One table can get boring. 2 rarely does and sometimes the drama can double.
In the German league a long time ago we had 2 tables and the spectators loved it. Then TV and short attention spans became the norm.

Each of the 5 single matches does include 3 games - it's just that each game counts 1 point for the team, like in the Indian league. I think that's fine and not too disjointed.

Wow, more motivation for Lei Kou! First, his hometown team doesn't pick him #1 and now his Portland team is predicted to finish last in the West division. Having him on the Paddlers will just make his teammates that much better. I think that the US Open champion has a real good chance to carry his team into the playoffs.

I regret sounding like a hater here, because I think it's amazing that SOMEONE is stepping up to do something potentially huge for table tennis since USATT will never elevate the sport in any way.
But when I watched the demo of the format during America's teams, I thought the format was absolute doo-doo. None of the players seemed to know what was going on, the spectators (can't even make a 'dozens of us' joke) were lost but trying to be supportive. It was an absolute mess that just screamed to me like they're trying to reinvent the wheel. Way over-complicated. If a bunch of players had trouble understanding it, I don't see how they expect people who have never watched table tennis to follow it.

Florida still had the edge. Even though Senura performed well and exceeded expectations in his singles match against Levinsky (who in my opinion looks a bit out of shape), it would have been an entirely different set of match ups in the Golden Game and I doubt if two choppers would have been used in the doubles match.
One thing for certain MLTT put on a show last night. The camera work was fantastic, the commentary was spot on and the play was exceptional. Enzo Angles will be tough to beat. The wild card in this league and player to watch is going to be rising star Adi Sareen of The Seattle Spinners

I agree it was great to watch. A couple of minor notes: the scoreboard was wrong a few times and the game scores of the current match would drop off right after the game. I would like to see the game scores stay up. Also, maybe they could have a couple of ballkids pick up the stray ball between points. Personally, I don't like to see all the balls lying around the court.

It looked like he may have kicked the table after losing that point and got a yellow. Hazin had a yellow card earlier. Must be two yellow cards for the team equals a red and loss of a point.

What is UTT format compared with MLTT? i think i finally understood the scoring system after watching the first two days and a friend explaining it to me lol at first i thought it was just all leading to the full golden game that determined the final score but then i realized with the help of a friend's description that it's 1 point for each game set and then the gg is 6 points. So a score of like 16-10 is actually a very close team match
Posted By: amateur
Date Posted: 09/17/2023 at 12:55pm
UTT just plays 4 singles and 1 doubles for a total of 15 games, with each game counting for 1 point. Half of the singles are men, the other half women, the doubles is mixed.
I can see why MLTT wants to try something new and emphasize the team aspect even more, but don't think the "golden game" (which is played to 21) should count for 6 total points - that's 3 times the weight of the other games. And apparently to mitigate this impact somewhat they added a rule by which the team that's leading after the first 15 games gets to start the GG with a point advantage equivalent to the lead in games. But that can lead to blowouts like in the first match of the season, where a 10-5 became inevitably a 16-5.
And at least on this first weekend I feel a bit bad for the female players (only one per team) - it seems that most are used in the doubles, and then of course (by necessity) in the Golden Game, most likely against strong male opponents where it's difficult for them to score a point (e.g. Angela Guan yesterday). That may change when Amy or Lily join the league, but the imbalance will probably remain.

I agree with you. They play 15 games just to have a 1, 3 or 5 point lead in the golden game which ultimately determines the winner of the match, unless a team leads 11-4 or more.
I also think that they should have the women play in a singles each team match. The West has Amy, Lily and Rachel Sung on different teams so maybe it will be a bit different next weekend.

The announcers just said that winning the team match doesn't really matter. The standings are all based on the points gained during each match.

In the first match today Carolina led Princeton 11-4, which had them start the Golden Game with a 5-0 advantage (5 points being the maximum possible here). Princeton fought back to 18-18, and it came down to Jeremy Hazin vs Angela Guan for the final points. Angela managed to win 1 point out of 4, but Hazin secured the win 21-19. Final result therefore: Carolina 17, Princeton 4 !!

Yep, a 17-4 win is much better than an 11-10 win. Every point counts.

Exactly, all won game points count towards the teams standings. The Golden Game actually adds quite a bit of drama as it's worth 6 points and it literally involves the entire team. Just imagine if Princeton had pulled it off... that would have been huge for them.

Well, Princeton actually outscored Carolina in the Golden Game 19-16 - but for the standings Carolina got 6 points from this game and Princeton ZERO.

The Golden Game is an all or nothing game. Princeton needed to do better in the matches prior to the Golden Game to reduce the advantage for Carolina. But at least they had a chance to redeem themselves. And if Angela could have won that last point, the next match up would have been Chen (Princeton) vs. Lin (Carolina). Chen is the stronger player, but anything can happen on a single point. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the Golden Game. It's all good .

I don't know twenty or so of those names... but Florida seems to have good depth and experience.
Told you so - Florida is 3-0

But oddly enough, they are not in first place. Carolina has 41 points to 40 for Florida. To me that just does not seem right but that is the way they chose to do it.

They need a standings tab on their website. Can't see which teams are leading in points. Also, there should be a stats tab. I would like to see the individual records of the players of their singles and doubles matches. Would like to know how many points each player contributed. Hopefully, they can add those to their site.

Although a bit odd, it reinforces the fact that every game counts. And although I don't know the terms of the contracts, I'm guessing team "wins" are incentivized. In any case, winning breeds camaraderie. You can see the camaraderie of the Florida Crocs after the inaugural event. Great to see!

Yes, great camaraderie for Florida. "Way to go Crocs. You were undefeated and beat Carolina but they made more money (slightly) than you did." More motivation for the Crocs for next time.

All that being said, it was great to watch. Professional announcers and camera work. Really looking forward to the West Division this weekend. Hope that all the main players will be playing.
