Hello, recently ordered a blade which was paid to be sealed. I think the store may have forgotten to seal the blade.. It is still in plastic package within the box. See attached. Also feels just like wood to me on surface. I'm no expert so seeking second opinion. May just seal it myself if they haven't.

Edit: Looking at wrap, can be removed and put back on. Okay maybe was being paranoid. Any way to tell by feeling surface?

Usually it's not hard to tell if it's sealed, as it's hard to get the sealing perfectly uniform, especially near or on the edges. Look for some areas that appear slightly more shiny than others. I can't see anything like that from your picture though.

You can tell very quickly once you apply glue to the blade, as it soaks in to the wood much more quickly.

If you're not sure, just seal it yourself... some blades really need to be sealed, or they'll be damaged after the first rubber removal.

I wish manufacturers would just seal all blades from the factory...

I always sand the flanges. Looks like you could cut your thumb off with that

Butterfly says their blades are pre-sealed (at the factory). I believe them.

But I always see their new blades in the box are very lightly sealed and hard to tell

the difference - not sealed or sealed. I slowly slide my finger over the blade surface to

see if I can feel the film sealant. If it feels slippery, then there is enough sealant for 1 time

glueing of rubber. If the surface feels kinda dry, then I would seal it lightly for added protection.

Careful not to use too much sealant as others have said it may change the properties/feel of the

rubber-blade feel.

Funny you should mention that, because I've noticed the same thing in recent times... assuming they're still sealed it must be a very light coat. Sometimes it feels like the glue still soaks into the surface very quickly, which is a sign that the sealing is too light IMO. Perhaps some batches have a lighter seal than others.

Of course many other brands don't seal their blades at all...

I Glued new rubbers for a SZLC user and after removing his worn 09C the wood splintered in hair like bits of wood despite using BTY Glue.

If you're really worried about splintering, I'd suggest using DHS No. 15 glue. Use the one that comes in the big bottle rather than the one you get in the small tube.

I've never used a glue that let me peel the rubber so easily off a blade. The only downside is that, if I contact the table on a push, the edge of the rubber will lift off the blade. So I have to use edge tape with this glue to make sure that doesn't happen.
