Per the rules, automatic entries for MS/WS should happen 4 weeks prior to event start (10/29), which was 10/3 TUE (TTWR 2023 Week 40 – 3rd October 2023). This is unusual.
WTT Feeder Otocec 2023, which starts on 10/30, already has the "Player List" populated for MS/WS.

How is Nicholas Lum ranked so high? I haven't really seen him having any major wins that would warrant his current ranking.

He is likely Oceania/Australian champion. His continental points will be the key there. Same with Adi Sareen and Finn Luu - maybe they have some way of sharing points across continental events that makes this make sense but obviously, those guys are a bit high.

Nicholas Lum: 500 pts from winning 2022 ITTF-Oceania Cup
Aditya Sareen: 500 pts from winning 2023 ITTF-Oceania Championships
Finn Luu: 350 pts from making finals of 2023 ITTF-Oceania Championships

Not sure what NextLevel means by "sharing points across continental events." In any case, only one continental result per player can count for the world ranking, so 500 points is the maximum one can get - which is quite a lot, of course.

Only one counts, but there are multiple opportunities ... Continental Champs/Cups/Games. So one player can win a Continental Champ and a different player can win a Continental Cup, and each gets 500 pts for example.
Yes, 500 pts is huge. It immediately puts you into top 40. And then you don't even have to do anything else.
Not to pick on Aditya Sareen (a fine player), but he literally has 3 events in the past 12 months:
2023 ITTF-Oceania Championships Winner 500 pts
2023 WTT Youth Contender, Charleston 4 pts
2022 WTT Feeder, Fort Lauderdale 0 pts
That puts him at WR#39 ahead of WR#40 WCT who played fantastic at the Asian Games making the SF, and has also played many WTT tournaments in 2023 (and did reasonably well).

Thanks, pongfugrasshopper captured my main point perfectly and you can see how it helps many countries, including (paradoxically) China. In fact, as funny as it sounds, it also enables some interesting conspiracy theorizing. China can encourage different players to win the Asian Cup, the Asian Championships and the Asian games because each player gets 500 or 1000 points or whatever only once.
The main reason it came to mind was that I saw how Quadri and Omar benefitted from spiltting the African Cup and African Championship titles. It is harder to coordinate across countries, but Omar got injured somehow so... that said, he did give his countryman Saleh more points by being "injured".
So yes, Australia can have 3 players highly ranked since they own the Oceania region and all they have to do is get 2 different players to win the continental events. Since they seem to be having Panamerican titles, it may be harder for the US girls to co-ordinate this, same with the Brazilian or US men. But hopefully you can see what I was pointing out.

OK, I see the "conspiracy" aspect of it. Next time Lily loses to Amy or Amy loses to Adriana in one of these continental events, we know it was rigged Then again, a second-place finish isn't too shabby either - 350 points puts you near the top 50. So let's hope table tennis remains a cheating-free sport as it has always been
As for Adi Sareen, he just lost to Enzo Angles in the Princeton Pong Open, so what does that say about these players' rankings or ratings?

Pongfugrasshopper,
Do you have a link to the page that details what events Sareen played in to get his ranking? Or is it something that has to be manually constructed?
Thanks,
NL

Calderano, Takahashi, Diaz, Zhang, and Wang are no longer listed - so it seems that WTT is generously allowing them to play Pan Am Games.
Kaufmann has received the host wildcard for the women.

I just want Miu Hirano to do well here in order to secure a spot in the https://worldtabletennis.com/rankings?selectedTab=WOMENS%20SINGLES&Age=RACE%20TO%20WTT%20FINALS" rel="nofollow - race to the WTT Finals . Top 16 players on WTT Tour make it to the WTT Finals which will be held in Nagoya, Japan starting December 15, and she's sitting right at that #16 spot (tied in points w/ CIC).
Gauzy has always something to say about everything...A BIG mouth as we say in french...
Well, it's normal, as a the host nation to give the remaining spots to local players...
What is not normal to me is: Lin Gaoyan, Lin Shidong, Qian Tianyi, Chen Xingtong....can't participate.
If you wan't to be fair, you have to take the first 32, whatever their nationalties.
The event is advertised as top 32, but is missing a lot of top 32 players like the ones you've mentioned. The event is also missing ZR, FSQ, KM, Kihara and Nagasaki. We're missing out on some potentially interesting matchups. Kihara recently beat WYD 3-0, for example.

Is the WTT YT channel translating the proceedings from Frankfurt?
I can't find anything, I checked with VPN, same result.
Am I misinformed, Is there a Chinese stream somewhere
I wanted to watch WCQ Vs KCJ because their clash in the Asian championships was a close encounter.

Miwa is making a strong case for that 3rd Olympics spot. Paired up with Kihara, they beat SYS/WMY in doubles in the QF at the Asian Games. And her strong singles performance here shows off her ability as a strong player in the teams event as well.

Gauzy has the ultimate advantage - being a Frenchman, he relieves Lebrun of his coach in these tour matches. And that is one of the biggest things that affects a junior - lack of tactical/strategic guidance.

And to add insult to injury, the new world ranking list has Boll as #200 - a drop of 138 spots, that's surely a record? He lost the 265 points from the 2022 World Cup Finals. Next week he'll gain 15 points thanks to his Champions wildcard, but that will only put him around #182, in the vicinity of Sid Naresh.

How wonderful of a selection system JTTA came up.
Although I agree that the selection system could be better, I'm not sure what the right answer is. If we go by world ranking, right now it would be Hayata and Ito in the top 2 spots.
Ito herself has said she's focusing on beating the Chinese players, and if she can do that her results vs. Japanese players will follow. Truth be told, she has not been successful at beating the Chinese players so far. Regardless, as a pro, she doesn't set the rules... she can only play by the rules given. And right now, she's still in contention for that 2nd spot. Not sure what else she's supposed to do.

Dragging it on for as long as it can lol
Winner here is WTT, the hotels, ticket sales and what not.
R32 (round 1) takes 3 days (total of 32 matches)
R16 (round 2) takes 2 days (total of 16 matches)
QF takes 1 day (total of 8 matches)
SF takes 1 day (total of 4 matches)
Final takes 1 day (total of 2 matches)
8 day tournament, with 2 events (mens and womens singles) and from R32 only, could finish inside 2 or 3 days.
So imagine SF day, you come in with your afternoon ticket and watch 4 matches and go home
final day, you come in and watch 2 matches and go home.
QF day, you have afternoon and evening session tickets for 4 matches per session
8+ day hotel bill if you want to follow from start to finish and to watch your favorite player play 5 matches (if he gets to the final)
this makes sense if this is comparable to the ITTF world cup. they didn't play a lot of matches per day back then either

So happy for Bernie Szocs!!! After she was cheated of a point in game 3, she kept her cool and won that game. And she had nerves of steel in game 5 to take down world no. 2.
Hirano (WR1 SYS and WR3 WYD in 2023) and Szocs (WR2 CM in 2022 and 2023, and WR7 CXT in 2023) are the only 2 non-CNT players to have defeated more than 1 core CNT player in the Paris 2024 period. WTT CT Zagreb 2023 F Hirano 4-3 SYS Singapore Smash 2023 R32 Hirano 3-2 WYD

Jonghoon beating LJK was not an upset at all, he plays like fire since wome weeks now: last week he's beaten both Lebrun Bros in french Pro A, yes: both, even Felix ! and Felix was leading 2-0 !
Given LJK is probably the most inconsistent of the 4 CNT guys, it's only pure logic.
And about FZD now we're sure he's a dwarf when it comes to tactics: playing the same CNT guys over and over that plays all the same does not serve his brain. When he has to deal with different kind of tactics and strokes, he's lost: Alexis + Sang Su the same year, that makes a lot. I think he's still winning against Truls because Truls is just... plain stupid sometimes, must be hard for Jorgen Persson to coach him when he goes mad like that.
The BH diagonal fight is not the alpha and omega anymore, that's good news, even Felix Lebrun knows it and has worked hard to get a stronger FH. Playing short game with very short pushes on the FH was definitely the worst tactic FZD has used countless of times vs Sang Su, he gave the stick to be beaten with. And Sang Su proves you also need a FH flick, not only a BH one.
More of it all, seems the stamina of all those CNT guys is getting worse, they all sweat hard after only a couple of points ! Ma Long has been caught again playing mind game and has been warned with a yellow card that was well deserved. WCQ of course is still above everyone, no question, but now we know why Liu Guoliang does not want the WTT he's the commander in chief to set competitions in Europe: it's just playing in hell for them.
Just a couple of french people filled with real male voices and a horn have been enough to shut up those chinese fangirls mouths. We've supported Sang Su the way he deserved, the german should do the same: anyone that face the CNT should be supported, this stupid era must end NOW.
But we all know how the germans are: they only think they're still the best team after China, the only thing they've found is to fill the men's draw with 6 germans to get only 2 in the second round !
And more of it all: with only 3 french, they've found a way to make 2 of them meet each other at the very first round !!!
The dice are loaded, clearly, germany plays China's game over and over, and I think the rest of the non-chinese TT world is getting sick of this.

So happy for Bernie Szocs!!! After she was cheated of a point in game 3, she kept her cool and won that game. And she had nerves of steel in game 5 to take down world no. 2.
Bernie is making me a fan. Watching this match, after the Euro Games final win from 1-3 down, she is such a fighter. That 5th game with CM was so tight it was stressful even to watch.

totally unrelated (I don't want to start a new thread) but Matthew Perry's drowning could have been caused by cardiac arrest related to pickleball training earlier in the day. Think about it. It could have easily been PP instead.

QD 0-3 F Lebrun 811 60, 71, 75 TO for QD, 76, 86, 88, 98, 911 40, 43, 73, 75, 77, 87, 811
What happened in the MS final of WTT CT Antalya 2023 was not a blip.
Normally, people would take more time between serves when things don't go their way. Yet, the Lebrun brothers take even less time between serves when that happens. That reminds me of AlphaGo, that we humans have been playing it wrong.
Take our understanding of the game of Go, which was taught and learned and optimized by humans for thousands of years. It took AIs less than three years to find out that we’d been playing it wrong all along and that there were better, almost alien, solutions to the game that we’d never considered—mostly because our brains don’t have the processing power to consider so many moves ahead.

That was game 2, where first Felix hit his shirt when serving (down 0-5) and then Dang did the same thing down 9-10 - crazy! Is this a penholder thing or what?

Ignore the bile and the frustrations, For a World number 1 and the back to back world champion, FZD can be tactically inept and chock-full of errors on receive. Also the arena plays a part, but it isn't as much as you think, it comes down to who wants it more and plays the part.

How did these errors and tactical ineptitude factor so heavily against a player he has a 14-0 tour record against prior to this match?

Some Tieba users say FZD is undergoing changes to his technical style. Admittedly, the fanboys and girls say it every time they lose, but that headband could be an indicator that something is going on.

He usually escaped because of his superiority in rallies ( which has obviously waned over the years), everyone can counterloop for days now, and opponent usually played suboptimally. His backhand can be peppered a lot nowadays unlike in his youth where he was a rock there. It also helps that now it seems everyone is truly tired of the Chinese winning, and they wanna usurp the status quo.

This is an interesting take, Truls must be wondering where this unable to rally, bad serve returning FZD was in his own match. It's fun to kick a man when he is down, we will see how well it holds up.

Truls made a boatload of errors especially when looping Fan's lazy long balls to the backhand. And he still hasn't figured out a way for him to win the key points.
Fan has beaten Felix like twice previously, I bet if he meets Felix in this form, he'll lose.

So Lee Sang Su, who was winless against Boll and Fan finally beats both of them in a tournament, and you want to make this result primarily about Fan's play. Seriously?

Boll was 3-0 up against Sangsu with the last two matches ending in the final set decider before their clash at Frankfurt. The same Boll hasn't been a regular feature on the tour for at least the past four years cos he's been plagued by injuries. This situation is different from a young ( should be in his prime) Fan ZD winning 14-0 against Sangsu with a huge amount of these wins being 4-0.
I already said the opponents are playing better, with more will to win, and with no glaring superiority in the Chinese's skills. Isn't that enough due to Sang Su and other players?
I think you're reading into something that isn't there, definitely something I didn't say. Anybody that returns services half long high and can't return the ball when it goes to his pocket will lose. For a world number to play that way, it's even more jarring. That's been my point.
