Yep, a 17-4 win is much better than an 11-10 win. Every point counts.

Exactly, all won game points count towards the teams standings. The Golden Game actually adds quite a bit of drama as it's worth 6 points and it literally involves the entire team. Just imagine if Princeton had pulled it off... that would have been huge for them.

Well, Princeton actually outscored Carolina in the Golden Game 19-16 - but for the standings Carolina got 6 points from this game and Princeton ZERO.

The Golden Game is an all or nothing game. Princeton needed to do better in the matches prior to the Golden Game to reduce the advantage for Carolina. But at least they had a chance to redeem themselves. And if Angela could have won that last point, the next match up would have been Chen (Princeton) vs. Lin (Carolina). Chen is the stronger player, but anything can happen on a single point. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the Golden Game. It's all good

But oddly enough, they are not in first place. Carolina has 41 points to 40 for Florida. To me that just does not seem right but that is the way they chose to do it.

They need a standings tab on their website. Can't see which teams are leading in points. Also, there should be a stats tab. I would like to see the individual records of the players of their singles and doubles matches. Would like to know how many points each player contributed. Hopefully, they can add those to their site.

Although a bit odd, it reinforces the fact that every game counts. And although I don't know the terms of the contracts, I'm guessing team "wins" are incentivized. In any case, winning breeds camaraderie. You can see the camaraderie of the Florida Crocs after the inaugural event. Great to see!

Yes, great camaraderie for Florida. "Way to go Crocs. You were undefeated and beat Carolina but they made more money (slightly) than you did." More motivation for the Crocs for next time.

All that being said, it was great to watch. Professional announcers and camera work. Really looking forward to the West Division this weekend. Hope that all the main players will be playing.

Looks like Carolina killed it in terms of the individual games but that's why they play as a team I guess.
![]() Carolina(2-1): 23-13 Chicago(1-2): 18-18 Florida(3-0): 16-20 Princeton(0-3): 15-21

I think it may take a while before they are able to get a reasonable amount of in-person tickets sold.
But I liked the quality of the online broadcast, the camera work, replays, commenters, and the fact it's 60fps. I would be happy to pay something extra to watch it in 4k/60. I feel like that low video quality, for a long time, was a bottleneck to enjoying watching TT video (mainly fps, but resolution is also a welcome change). The game is just too fast for 30 fps. Fencing has a similar problem. I think that highest quality video, perhaps at a premium, can be a reasonable path to monetization with benefits for all sides.

With all the clubs in the south Bay, I would hope that many people would bring the kids and make the short drive over the hill to Santa Cruz. Are there any clubs in Daytona Beach? The hometown Blasters are playing against Kou Lei on the Portland team and Kumar on the Seattle team. I think that we will see more people at this one.

Not exactly on topic, but looks like Quadri Aruna is signed up for the U.S. Open. Maybe Ojo of the Florida Crocs put it a good word for us?

I just realized that the majorponghead blogger seems to be a majority owner of one of the teams. That may help explain his enthusiasm!

I am wondering if Amy Wang will play singles this weekend?
Also hoping that Kou Lei, Nikhil Kumar and Wenzhang Tao will get to play each other in singles. Wondering how Adi Sareen will do?

The format definitely gets you a bit closer to the edge of your seat than usual. Love the team vibes and the possibility of either team coming out on top all the way to the end. Adds a thrill to the usual expectations of table tennis.

Your wish was their command - they have ballkids now. And this kind of venue seems more appropriate than a 9000-seat arena (for now).

Does anyone know how the lineups are chosen?
It looks like the Golden Game matchups are made just before that game. Which team picks first? |

Seattle won the Golden game 21-12 to win the match 15 - 6 over the Bay Area team.
Standings after Day 2: Seattle 25, Bay Area 22, Portland 20, Houston 17.

Golden Game lineups follow a "snake" format, like the draft - one coach announces their first player, then the other coach picks first and second, then the first coach second and third, and so on. Today saw a couple of blowouts, 16-5 for Texas vs Seattle and even 18-3 for Portland vs Bay Area. What remains to be seen is whether this league can catch on outside the inner circle of table tennis aficionados (like the people who are on this forum and in the YouTube chat) - a true professional league will need some broader following in order to attract sponsors and produce return on investment. |
