Hello

One of the Russian players at my club wanted me to find out how the rating system would compare to the US system? For example, what would a 2000 US player be in Russia?

Thanks

There are so called 'grades' in sports in ex-USSR sports system, from highest to lowest.
Can't find any good terms to represent them in English so the naming might sound a bit weird.

Master of sports;
Candidate Master of sports;
First grade;
Second grade;
Third grade

I'm pretty sure he's familiar with that.
From what I've seen in the US, US 2000 is approximately close to First grade in Russia where 2300 would be Candidate Master of sports.

I don't exactly agree that Candidate (a.k.a "KMC" in Russian) is 2300 USATT.  I think it is closer to 2100-2200.

I know a couple of former national team members (one European, and another person represented a South American country, both were team members for many years) and their current USATT is ~2500 +/-30. Many former members of Chinese provincial teams end up playing 2300-2400 level. IMHO all these folks would reach a "Master of Sport" ranking in Russia/former USSR.

I think people tend to over-inflate their USATT estimate. Anyone over 2000 is considered an "expert" and people over 2100-2200 are usually very talented juniors and /or players who seriously trained when they were younger.
