Thanks for the heads up. The Tieba's comment is actually consistent with the one by Music&Ping (OldUser?) on TTD, a member from France. I wonder where they got their source.

Below are more sources from 2021 where Felix mentions Chen Jian.

https://swaythlingclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/swaythling-april-2021.pdf
Quote "I saw a penholder, a Chinese player who was playing for Istres Club, Chen Jian", explained Felix Lebrun. "He was also a practice partner for some time for the men's team at the national training centre, INSEP. I liked him and his style of play very much, I took him as an example, as a model."

https://ttfit.app/felix-lebrun/
Quote You are one of the few successful young penhold players, who or what inspired you to play this style?

When I was young there was a French Division 1 player called Chen Jian who trained in Montpellier. When I went to the gym with my father I often saw him train and wanted to play like him! I continued to play this way and really enjoyed it, so this became my style.

As far as I know, Chen Tianyuan and his family live in Cholet, close to his club of La Romagne and quite the distance from where the Lebrun are based, in Montpellier. I'm quite doubtful that he's ever been their coach. As far as I know, the Lebruns have always had French coaches.

As for converting to penhold, his dad explains he started with it at age 3-4, around 5:35.

At that time stamp, the dad says that Felix saw a cpen Chinese player named Shenzen play and later on asked if he could use the same grip, when he started "baby ping" at 3-4 years old. That would indicate Felix was impressed by the cpen grip at 2 years old... An early adopter!

Shenzen = Chen Jian.

Just found out Gauzy has been struggling mentally, and needless to say the Lebrun brothers are a big factor, among others.

Did the dazzling arrival of the Lebrun brothers also play a role?
I laugh about it with everyone: a year and a half ago, I had never heard of them. A year ago, I was sure to make the Games, today this is no longer the case (there will be three selected by teams, two of which will be able to compete in the singles). When you see yourself sinking and them climbing at an unprecedented speed... I took a hit. I think it's pretty legit, I'm not ashamed to say it. I also think it will do me good, everyone has been waiting for my results for almost fifteen years, it is I who have brought the best French results overall... There, it will make an incredible team. Even if I don't qualify in singles, the team is potentially medalable. It's up to me to focus on my project. They play extremely well, I have nothing to do with it, and they have nothing to do with my results either.

Good find about Gauzy. Yeah that has to be rough to kind of have them come out of nowhere. A risk for all pro athletes, being replaced by some upstart. You rarely hear about one being replaced.

Gauzy closed the Bronze medal match with a win for France.  That must have felt good given his overall struggles and broadly served as a reminder of the valuable role he plays when he is at his best.  He probably also has a good chance at playing mixed doubles with Pavade (unless Lebesson can find a way to replace Gauzy on the men's team as a more valuable partner with Alexis).  I think working on his doubles with Alexis might make the team better.

C-pen with French characteristics (destroy the competition + serve on the spot)

The year 2023 will likely be seen as the point of divergence for A. Lebrun and F. Lebrun.

Divergence is too strong a word... I think there are still too many opportunities for both to reinforce each other for divergence to be the right term.

I like to imagine the 2 brothers made a pact when they were still little kids: no matter one of us gets ahead, the other will be happy about it and will encourage it before catching up. Hopefully it happens many times both ways in their careers and they'll support themselves up all the way.
They are world class players who have something nobody else has: a world class practice partner at home who happens to be a blood brother they know by heart. They must know the immense value of it like we do, why wouldn't they? On their way to become grown-up men, dark feelings rising when one gets a series of more success will be unavoidable and they will force inner work to use them as positive fuel to keep warming up the pact.

But at the European Games, Small Glasses won the title but Big Glasses fell short, and things started to wax and wane after that. In the past, Big Glasses had a streak of wins against Moregard, but has lost recently. And this time, Small Glasses shut out Moregard.)

(Big brother has suffered a self-destruction since he was defeated by Darko 4:0 in the WTTC. He has basically never won against anyone at the same level, and his current state is far inferior to that of his younger brother.)

(Mainly the European Games. Small Glasses won the title, but Big Glasses fell short in the semifinal.)

(I like the younger brother very much, however, the younger brother's performance in Europe may be related to the fact that European players are not familiar with penhold. In the European Games, another penhold player Qiu Dang was defeated by his brother who is familiar with penhold. I hope the younger brother can have more opportunities to play with Asian players)

Yes, I'm aware but like I don't count the leagues. Players use them to adjust their form, try out new stuff etc.

That depends, you can't generalize. And you shouldn't compare Europe to China in that respect -completely different history and importance of league play.

(It seems that little glasses can only dominate in Europe? The threat is not that great anymore, may not even run into the CNT at the Olympics.)
(In addition, is table tennis one of the rare events where open competitions and leagues are held concurrently? I feel like the league is chicken-ribs.)

(It's just one match, how can you conclude that he is only strong in Europe? Didn't he beat Lin Shidong a few days ago? Lin's strength is not bad. It's just a league and not an international competition. It's normal to win and lose. Why don't you mention that he is ranked 9th in the world?
