I will be going with my wife for a week at the end of the year - we are very excited about the food... so i will need a bit of exercise on this trip (to increase my appetite of course). My internet searches have no yielded promising results - so, does anyone know where to play in Tokyo? Or just bring a paddle and wave it at people???

There are a lot of entertainment centers that have tables, but they are geared towards families and recreational players. There are also a lot of clubs. Some have membership requirements, and some let you walk in and play. Its best to call ahead and see how things work.

OMODA Table Tennis Club 03-5935-7655 ITS Mitaka Table Tennis Club 0422-49-8629 Arakawa Sougou Sports Center 03-3802-3901 Others I know of: Kataoka Sports Center 03-3389-3577 Kunihiro Table Tennis 03-3396-8586 Kunihiro's a bit out of the way, but they're incredibly friendly even to giant foreigners who look lost. No special requirements - arrive and play. |

Hi, sirloopsalot!
I live in Tokyo. When you come to Japan, please send me a message. Maybe I can help you. 'Kunitaku' is located near from my house. If you'd like to visit table tennis shops in Tokyo, I will take you there. And if you are interested in table tennis lessons from a Chinese coach, I recommend 'Nicchuu Takkyuu Center' (Japan China Table Tennis Center) where I used to have lessons. Or, you may come to my PTA club to play with me and other members. |

I'm interested too in finding out more information!
I play with a friend sometimes in a municipal gym when I am in Tokyo. This is in Warabi, a bedroom community in Saitama prefecture about an hour or so north of central Tokyo. They have barriers. Most municipal gyms don't and you can't therefore use a box of balls. This is the cheapest way to play. About 300 yen for a table for a few hours. I notice there are regular, self-organized groups there. For example, a bunch of 4 2300-2400 players tend to come on certain nights and practice amongst themselves. There are some old people groups on weekend mornings. And my friend and I. But there doesn't seem to the US style of club play in these gyms, i.e. these groups are self-contained and rarely interact. No putting your paddle under a table and calling next.

That Naka-Meguro pub is not a serious ping pong place. For non-serious stuff, there are also 24 hour ping pong places in Shibuya and Shinjuku.
Why don't you ask at a ping pong shop where people play? For example, I sometimes shop at the Shibuya branch of T.T. Kokusai. http://www.kokusaitakkyu.com/ Seems like they have a place in Yokohama to play. You could try going to municipal gyms near you and befriending players. For example, I've played at The Minata-ku gym near Tamachi station. Huge number of tables. Lots of players. No airconditioning though. No individually barriered courts. I've also played in Meguro-ku's gym too by the river. 50m swimming pool outside. Airconditioned in summer. But only a few tables. No individually barriered courts. Both times I showed up with friends. But I've also just showed up by myself and played in Komaba's municipal gym. Just go to your local gym and ask what times of the week the ping pong is on. |

I know those places because I spent last year at University of Tokyo on sabbatical leave, and I used to work for NEC (Nippon Denki). I still visit from time to time.

Hello, We are visiting Japan for 3-4 weeks in August and I am looking for a good TT-club for my 11 year old son who is a very keen player. He would like to join a "TT-camp for young talented players". I believe he will be pretty good by August as he is attending a TT-school in China during June.
All advice highly appreciated! Henrik Silver, Stockholm, Sweden |

Yo guys,
I've moved to Tokyo and wondered if there's anyone here who plays ping pong. I'm currently staying in Nishi Kawaguchi, but their local club is a thin table in the backroom of a wine shop - there's not even enough room to play forehand loops, let alone chopping! I'm told there's a club called "Round 1" in Ikebukuro, also a 24hr club opposite Shibuya train station. Where do you guys play? |

Thanks mate will do since I need a bat anyway. You love sword? I used to play with a sword carbon blade - really fast! Now I'm into lighter balsa blades.
There must be some folks here that play in Tokyo though... |

Update,
It's been 6 months in Tokyo, and I've found a few clubs to play at: 5 minutes walk from Shibuya station, there's a 24 hour "ping pong cafe" with a bar. Players are mostly dressed for a night out or in work clothes. It's expensive, about $5 for 30 mins, although the staff gave my first session free. I met a cool guy from Korea who was more serious, and invited me to the next one on this list. In Nakano, a few stops from Shinjuku, there's a community center with about 10 tables every Saturday. There is coaching in one room, with free play in the bigger room. It's VERY good value, about $2 for the whole day. The level of the players range from elder hard bat specialists to serious all out topspin attackers. The restaurant there serves good curry. In Yokohama, there's a country club with about 6 tables. It's expensive, about $10 for 2 hours with a lower standard of players, although I'm told there's a good UK player lurking around and a Chinese coach comes once a month. On the plus side, you get free access to the facilities like sauna, jacuzzi, bowling, snooker etc. Last but not least, in Kita-Akabane is a venue where the Olympic team trains, including Ai-chan. Only just been told this today by a Japanese resident who lives there, so I'll check it out later. If anyone happens to be in Japan and wants a game, feel free to add me on facebook: mark.fallaize.7

Reviving this old thread!
I'm in Kyoto right now and will be going to Tokyo for a week in 2 days. I really want to play table tennis a couple times while I'm there. Free clubs would be nice, but I'm willing to pay. The bigger the club, the better. Which clubs should I visit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I only speak very little Japanese.
