An hour ago, Table Tennis World posted the following entry after approaching Li Sun for clarification. The reason given is that there must be a 5-day public notice. Then why not release the list last week?

In the comments, Weibo users point out that the public notice for other disciplines goes to 7/16 or 7/19...

And if the "final deadline for substitutions" seems to be 9/16...

A Tieba user suspects the real reason has to do with the curse for the reigning Olympic Champion. Very interesting if true.

The decision of picking WYD over CM and WMY is in line with the stats. It seems the CNT has accepted losing to the JNT as inevitable. It's Romania after that.

For the men's, the KNT turns out to pose the most threat in MS and MD. Sweden in MS and MD (not shown), Japan and Slovenia in MS (not shown) are also a force to beware.

Quote Given the above, expect more "point fixing" for various players to happen down the road. I guess even they didn't expect WMY to crash out of the WTTC 2023 like that. WYD as the 3rd player used to be a fail-safe, but now she has a shot at the singles, again as another fail-safe.

Quote Given the players handpicked for the selection trial of WTTC Finals 2022, it is safe to assume the following:
CXT will be the 5th player for WTTC 2023 and WT of Asian Games 2022. QTY has lost the race. CM, WMY, SYS, WYD and CXT will be the candidates for Paris 2024. Slowly but surely, CM will fade, WMY and SYS will play WS and one of them will play XD, and WYD/CXT will be the 3rd/reserve player.

They wanted to see if KM, CY et al. would be fit to serve as the reserve player for Paris 2024 but we all saw how it panned out. They will turn their focus on keeping WMY and SYS healthy until Los Angeles 2028.

Interesting not to see WCQ/SYS for ATTC 2023. Given that the winner in the Mixed Doubles Event of the 2023 Asian Championships earns a Mixed Doubles spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics, I'm assuming that if either WYD/LGY or QTY/LJK win, China will likely decline their Mixed Doubles Quota. China will likely stick to their criteria of qualifying their Olympic Mixed Doubles pair by WR

In any case, without WCQ/SYS, there's a greater chance that one of the pairs from JPN, KOR, HKG, TPE, or IND can win the event and secure a XD quota for Paris 2024.

Isn't it great to be China, you can just find the money to make things happen that suit your agenda in a sport like TT?

Lol, Was there ever a "Lanzhou Star Contender" on the cards or in the bigger picture of the WTT??

Isn't this just China finding tournaments hosting tournaments here and there to keep a fig leaf on the WTT and at the same further their goals and designs??

What's Korea, Austria, Sweden and others doing??

WMY climbs up to 3rd after ATTC 2023. Still a long way to go.

On the men's side, what is the standing now ?
As I can guess, there are some reward points which can become dramatic...especially for Wang Chuqin who got nearly no points from those Asian Championships.

CNT Road to Paris Standings After 2023 Asian Championships

Men's

Women's

The most significant development is ML closing the gap with WCQ. Had ML played and won his match in the Men's Team Final, he would have had an additional 800 Bonus Points and would actually be ahead of WCQ right now. WCQ has a chance to widen the gap though given that he was chosen to play the Asian Games Singles.

Pasting the Twitter exchange here because it's indeed funny.

A number of Chinese reactions are defensive and don't seem to take it too well though.
