    Posted: 08/28/2008 at 11:41am
Over the past few days, I must admit that M_O_L has become increasingly irritating and offensive, which prompted me to create this thread, in the interest of not only maintaining proper decorum, but as a community - minority as we are (though MyTT remains to be the most popular forum-based site out there), everybody needs to be respected, regardless of skill-level, race, nationality, or what have we.

That said, I am formally requesting that the existing rules be amended to include the following (these rules are not original and are collectively taken and edited from various Internet forums and edited for this site's benefit):

==========================================================

1. LANGUAGE TO BE USED IN POSTINGS. It is the goal of this board that all postings will be understandable by the widest audience possible. Since MyTT is Internationally accessible, therefore posting in 100 percent English in all sections of the board is recommended. The use of local phrases or expressions is allowed in order for people to share their own way of expressing their which would be unique to their own language or culture. In this way, this forum may also serve as a vehicle for people to learn other people's cultures. Anyone may ask for a translation of a particular phrase, which the concerned poster should immediately provide.

1st offense: Warning
2nd offense: 2 weeks suspension
3rd offense: 1-month suspension
4th offense: Banned permanently

2. USERNAME - Usernames with bad/obscene language shall be deleted on sight. Having two or more usernames are not allowed (While difficult to prove, it is not impossible). Moderators are empowered to investigate suspected users with multiple handles and if proven, Moderators reserve the right to ban ALL usernames of the said member. Double handles are a threat to forum harmony, especially when others try to use one's handle or pretend to be someone they are not.

1st offense: Banned permanently

3. POSTS - No vulgar, obscene, bad words, pornographic, inappropriate words, images or links allowed. Posting of gross, nude or semi-nude pictures or its links are strictly prohibited. Posting of any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, racist, harassing, obscene, profane, offensive, foul language, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, copyrighted or otherwise in violation of ANY law are strictly prohibited and legal actions can be taken against the violator. Do not discriminate any race, gender, religion, politics, etc. Do not use the forum to discuss illegal activities.   Religious and Political debates are also discouraged.  Keep it clean folks!!

1st offense: Warning
2nd offense: 2 weeks suspension
3rd offense: 1-month suspension
4th offense: Banned permanently

4. SPAMMING - Posting non-sense, no-value posts within a thread or across different threads for the sole purpose of increasing one's post count is called spamming. Typical of this type of posting is to post one-word or one-liners and successively doing it for a short period of time.

1st offense: Warning
2nd offense: 2 weeks suspension
3rd offense: 1-month suspension
4th offense: Banned permanently

5. MEMBER's PERSONAL PICTURES - Occasionally members will post some of their personal pictures and share them with forum friends. Photochoping as well as disrespectful and offensive comments towards members personal pictures are prohibited and shall be dealt with disciplinary actions.

1st offense: 2 weeks suspension
2nd offense: 1-month suspension
3rd offense: Banned permanently

6. LETTERS & SYMBOLS - Bold, huge and capital letters are used for shouting  - unless one is visually impaired which will require one to post in Big Bold Letters - shouting is not allowed. Forum users must not use capital letters, excessive question marks (?), exclamation points (!), or smileys in your title or post.

1st offense: Warning
2nd offense: 2 weeks suspension
3rd offense: 1-month suspension
4th offense: Banned permanently

7. HI-JACKING OF THREADS - Posting unrelated or unwanted discussions to the topic is discouraged and the moderators have the right to delete derailed posts without warning. Posts that are completely off topic will be removed and the offender shall be dealt with accordingly. This also includes posting the same message in multiple forums.  It is the Thread Starter's (TS) responsibility to realign posters to the topic at hand if they feel the discussion is not within the context of the topic.

1st offense: Warning
2nd offense: 2 weeks suspension
3rd offense: 1-month suspension
4th offense: Banned permanently

8. FLAMING - Do not flame, retaliate, threaten, air your grievances or use the forum as a place to settle disputes. "Flaming" is a computer term that refers to directing abusive and insulting messages to another forum user. This will not be tolerated. While we try to allow people to voice their opinions, we do not want to see posts that offend other forum members.

1st offense: Warning
2nd offense: 2 weeks suspension
3rd offense: 1-month suspension
4th offense: Banned permanently

9. "REPORT" Button - Moderators will not catch or uncover every violation, problem posts and problem posters.  Everyone is encouraged to report all your complaints by clicking on the "REPORT" Button found beside the QUOTE BUTTON located at every message/post area. A PM sent to the Mods is also an alternative.

10.  SELLING - MyTT is an excellent venue for its members to sell Table Tennis items.  ONLY Table Tennis items and products are allowed and any deviation/violation shall be deleted or locked by the Moderators.  Sellers are to provide accurate descriptions of their products, pictures are most welcome and encouraged to provide potential buyers a good visual of the item.  Any seller willfully posting inaccurate information or pictures of their products will be dealt with severely after a buyer-member reports the problem to a Moderator.  While selling is allowed, MyTT shall not be responsible for any dispute that may arise for transactions between members made thru the site.

1st offense: Warning with a 1month suspension
2nd offense: Banned permanently

GENERAL GUIDELINES

1. RESPECT - Respect others' views & opinions and you'll be respected in return.

2. NEWBIES - Help Newbies get acquainted, especially with the different cliches, jargons, & acronyms that we all use.  ALL OF US WERE NEWBIES ONCE!!

3. FORUM RULES - Rules and policies are there for a reason, follow and respect them - this site is free you know?!

==========================================================

These are not originals and anybody who wishes to add more to the suggestion, please feel free to do so.

I think these are good ideas actually. Do any other mods or admins have anything to say?

Very nice suggestions, although if the forum tools are a package I doubt changes to the template like extra buttons etc. can be implemented easily. Probably ip checking may not be easy as well for an off-the-shelf product if the functionality is not already in place. And most probably the burden on moderators will be pretty big for the tens or hundreds of posts appearing daily.

I hope though that something could be done for troll speed_king/master_of_loops and his/her immature/childish, offensive and inappropriate posts.

I think that having two identities should be allowed unless there is spamming involved. More than three - warning and deletion of the latest identities > 2. Then ban. It is too much to ban someone for the first offense.

I think some of these suggestions are going a bit too far... e.g.,

a) occasional thread hi-jacking happens all the time

b) occasional shouting (often unintentional) can be easily tolerated. Using bold style is often necessary to hilite names or other things

c) ban no-value posts? how can anybody really determine that? if you follow this, tommyzai would be thrown out of this forum ages ago - do we really want that?

But I completely agree with you on selling non-TT stuff! this s*** started to happen quite often in the last months or two... oh, wait, did I just say s***? oh, s***! oh man, am I going to be banned now?

you wont be banned, just don't do it again now. As a mod, me and jeff will see what is truly obscene, you JimT are a respected forum member, so saying something like that one time wont technically mean anything.

I think two or more identities should be allowed only for people with multiple personalities...

Otherwise I do not see a reason for someone for example to keep one account to attack people and the other to pretend to be a nice guy... It would seem to me that people with multiple accounts have hidden agendas or malicious intend, I cannot think of any other justification...

Too many rules will make this site less popular. Banning sometimes is a bad idea - I vote for controlled freedom. The rules should be simpler and shorter (like 10 commandments).

You don;t need the report button. Just PM me. I'll make sure my om box is always clear. And only Alex, I believe, can ban somebody, so its really up to him. But if you have a suggestion, just Pm me, no topics about it. Thanks.

Experience-wise, members with double handles often have hidden agenda's.  Oftentimes, would use the other handle to play part of a forum violator.

Yea, really limit it to one. Plus can't you tell if it is the same person by the IP address?

I totally agree that 2 usernames from the same IP seems malicious. This could be easily detected and blocked by admin.

OMG, thank you!... seriously, don't you think that was a bit too patronising, perhaps?

anyway, extra identity sometimes is used by another family member (IP address would be the same), sometimes for short-lived purposes etc. I don't think that should be prosecuted unless there are actual complaints against one of the nicks.

I can definitley agree with the language portion of this, this is an all english forum and we should all be kept in the loop about what is being discussed. Also the profanity has been really bad on here lately and I think there should be strict punishment about that and about public bashing of other members, I know i haven't been an angel on here before but lately it's been bad.

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa    ditto.  Im a newbie...and the olypmic games were my first indepth view at professional tourneys/players.   I got tired of the Cho's after 2 days.

Id prefer a simple gruntting noise on some slams like Monica Selas (sp) to the celebration after every freaking point.   But hey...the level of play and effort at the top level is just absolutely amazing to me.

However, I do agree that the forums are getting a little out of hand lately and degenerating into little more than ridiculous posts and name calling.  I think something can and should be done about that.  An occassional excursion into idiocracy can be tolerated, but let's not have it all the time.

with regards to selling items on mytt, lachlan tan has been promoting the olympic ceremony dvd, this should be allowed as it is a sporting event in which tt had a can of woopass!

and also, generally any sporting apparel or items, not neccessarily tt, like donic shirts, how about just sports goods, or banddages for the knee?

i dunno, i think selling of sporting good that may help in tt is good as well

yeah i think these rules are a great idea.. the only thing i have any kind of qualm with is #6.. but i also think a lot of these rules can be acceptable under certain situations.. maybe not a lot but there are always exceptions that are acceptable, or atleast understandable. It all depends, as long as it gets looked at and not just automatically dismissed.

"Treat others as you wish to be treated yourself"

For a forum to work, you should treat other people with respect.

Forum members will have a variety of views and there will be those who you disagree with and who disagree with points you make, however; it doesn't justify you insulting them or them you.

If you disagree with someone, then explain your reasoning for disagreeing, in a constructive way; so that they can understand your thoughts.

I agree with the rule of posting in one langauge i.e. English. The problem with foreign language postings is a lot members will not be able to read or understand them; so you are none the wiser if they are helpful and worthy of their place on the forum or abusive without it being obvious.

Most of the suggestions above are based on common sense to keep the forum working properly and useful for those who visit this website.

The purpose of this forum is to share information about a sport we play and are interested in what other people think,  because it could be of benefit to us and to share our own views, in the belief they will of benefit to others..
