    Posted: 12/23/2013 at 1:12am
I spent 15 days cruising from LA to Hawaii and back on Sapphire Princess. This is the first ship I cruised where ping pong tables were in enclosed area and there was no sea breeze. On other ships, the tables were outside the deck and wind was blowing. Apparently ping pong players knew about this nice location of the tables that there were enough ping pong players who brought their own paddles.

There was TT tournament everyday at 9:30am. The prize was a water bottle each day at sea and a deck of cards when it was "shore" day.We had to use the ship's hardbats for tournaments.    I brought my own hardbat but I had to use the ship's hardbat. No matter what, after the ship's all other activities, there was always time for ping pong, which other ships couldn't offer. I practiced with a 2000 player everyday for one hour and also played with others who brought their own paddles. I also got to practice with my own hardbat with others.

I also heard Diamond Princess had the same built for ping pong area.

I share this so ping pong players will cruise on ships with good ping pong area and hopefully the demand for table tennis play will cause the cruise ship companies to pay attention to where ping pong tables should be placed. Obviously, having the opportunity to play ping pong is very important to me.

I heard all cruise ships are very strict with their tournament rulles. Must use their paddles only for their tournaments. That sucks. But i guess it keeps everyone on a fair playing field giving a chance to the "old school" folks who grew up playing hardbat

This interests me.   I thought that cruises and ping pong were incompatible because of the breeze.  What is wrong with the ships hard bats?  Won't they accept a hard bat that meets the specification of hardhat.org?

I would think about taking a TT friendly cruise ship.   I like playing hardhat.   I think I could adapt to ship's rules.

At least I know not to take anything but a hard bat on a cruise.

I cruised on Celebrity Silhouette last year. They have indoor table tennis tournaments(double & single) almost everyday. You can use your own paddles. I played with guys using pips, j-pen and c-pen there. It's a lot of fun.

I was able to beat a penhold hardbat player using my own hardbat so in the tournament he demanded that the ship's hardbat be used. The cruise director agreed with him even though I said mine was approved hardbat paddle. On the next day, another cruise director announced that the ship's equipments were to be used.

Some players never played in the tournament. They brought their own paddles to practice. I played some doubles with some Vancouver players.

Good to know Celebrity Silhouette also has enclosed area for TT. I'll keep an eye for that cruise ship.

Several years ago I cruised on Carnaval Jubalee to Mexico. They had 2 tournaments. Since that was my first cruise I brought my sponge bat and soon realized none of my shots where landing. The tournament was outside with an overhead awning. I noticed everyone else was using hardbats..so I was surprised at this. I soon realized why everyone was using hardbats. It seems inverted rubber and sea mist do not mix lol. Thank goodness I had brought my Hock also and went on to win 2nd place in the first tourney and 3rd in the second.

I've been on several cruises.  Norweigian, Princess, and Carnival all had ping pong tournaments.  Royal Carribean, despite the fact that they had nice tables and indoor set-up, did not have one.  In one tourney, I actually saw a kid bring a Michael Maze blade with Tenergy on both sides.  It was funny because just like a USATT tourney, he had annoying dad in tow.  The dad was questioning the draw, lighting, etc.  The dad actually argued because the tournament director would not allow the "fancy paddle".  But to keep the annoying dad from irritating him, the paddle was allowed.  I thought I would face the kid in the finals but another guy beat him because the kid had no clue how to play against the house paddle (slick pre-made).

I've had my share of tournaments won but I have to think twice about future cruise tournaments.  On the one hand, I can tell some of the participants recognize a "real" TT player even while using pre-mades or hardbat or whatever the ship provides.  This might motivate them when they get back home to seek a TT club.  On the other hand, I feel that even though it is not explicitly stated in the rules, it really is a tournament for novices.  So trying to win something like that is just trying to inflate a pathetic ego.  I'm surprised some here argue about getting your own ITTF racket allowed.  Seriously?

I will say this though, it can be really interesting to see some unorthodox strokes especially when they actually work! There was this one guy and he had a total tennis backhand like Pete Sampras.  And the guy never missed that shot!

Good info, but taking it a little too serious.. I don't like seeing ping pong and ego together, which is apparently a huge problem in the US. I'd rather see ping pong and fun together. I like the house paddle rule, as it calms the playing field, but have ittf paddles would be good for promoting the sport. Many of my friends have never seen tenergy like rubbers before, most Americans think hardbat and premade is what pros use..

I think the officials only pick up the ball at the end of the game. Otherwise, it would be for the players to retrieve it.

if you're gonna dive and retrieve the ball you will end up shouting "let!" 2-3x before hitting the water LOL

I've been on Royal Caribbean and Carnival, and both of the cruise ships had enclosed areas in which to play. Royal Caribbean had a tournament, which required you to use the house equipment. I didn't mind that at all. Carnival just had a few tables with folks casually playing.

Even though my response is a bit belated, I wanted to thank you for sharing your experience! It's really interesting to learn about the best conditions for ping-pong enthusiasts on cruise ships. Although I'm not a professional ping-pong player, I'll definitely keep this in mind for my future travels. Speaking of which, I've already booked my cruise from Los Angeles to the Hawaiian Islands through https://www.cruisetimetables.com/cruises-from-los-angeles-california.html, and I'm really looking forward to this amazing trip. I'm sure it'll leave me with some fantastic impressions!
