About the world table tennis revolution, I would like to talk about some of my point of views. Hope this will help for the development of the world table tennis spots in the future. I am expecting the further discussions.

Table Tennis Team Match Revolution

The following is a revolutionary way of playing table tennis that would showcase players of all different styles. Table Tennis Team Match Revolution (TTTMR) gives offensive and defensive players equal competition time and encourages the development of all style of players.

Table tennis is a predominantly individual sport dominated by offensive players. Current modern table tennis is dominated by smooth rubber shakehand players, such as Zhang Jike, Ma Long, and Timo Boll. Defensive players such as Joo Saehyuk and Wu Yang and pip-out forehand players, like  Liu GuoLiang and Li Jiawei,  have fewer chances of winning world champion titles. Contemporary players favor shakehand and smooth rubber; few players nowadays play with penhold or pips-out.

The established view of table tennis is that it’s a sport that emphasizes individualism. The definition can be found in the History of U.S. Table Tennis book by Tim Boggan and the USA Table Tennis Club Handbook. Instead of being a strict individual sport, table tennis can actually harness teamwork more than its current format.

How can we change table tennis into a collaborative team event?

How can we showcase all the features of table tennis in one team match?

Below are the answers to these two questions.

New Table Tennis Team Match Format

First we can change our team event “Format” as the following:

Match

Team A

Team B

m1*

Double Offensive

Double Defensive

m2

Double Defensive

Double Offensive

m3

Double Free Style

Double Free Style

m4

1st Free Style Player

1st Free Style Player

m5.g1*

1st Single Offensive Pip

1st Single Defensive

m5.g2

1st Single Defensive

1st Single Offensive pip

m5.g3

1st Single Offensive Pip

1st Single Defensive

m5.g4

1st Single Defensive

1st Single Offensive pip

m5.g5  (7points)

Toss coin to decide which team 1st Single Offensive pip player to play, other team 1st Single Defensive player to play, or

Randomly determine 1st Single Offensive pip or 1st Single Defensive player to play for each team.

*Note:  m= match / g= game

Offensive players with pips-out forehand playing against defensive choppers is a more fair match up both technically and from an equipment point of view. The matches would yield more rallies and the outcomes would be harder to predict. This will introduce volatility to the table tennis team event. This match-up is similar to American football, where the offensive teams play against the defensive team, adding excitement and a level of complexity to the sport.

The first three matches are all doubles competition. Each team’s goal is to win a team with a 3:0 sweep, where all six players would contribute evenly to the team event.  After the third match, if neither team has a 3-match lead, the game will continue with individual-player competition. Only in this phase (Match 4 and after) will individual players become a crucial element to the match.

TTTMR Player Descriptions

No.

Player

Description

1

1st Offensive player

Pips-out  FH shakehand  (Li Jia Wei)

2

2nd Offensive  player

Pips-out FH penhold (Liu Guo Liaong)

3

1st Defensive Player

Normally shakehand  FH smooth rubber / BH pips-out (like Wu Yang & JOO Saehyuk)

4

2st Defensive Player

Normally penhold FH smooth rubber / BH pips (like Zhang  Xie Lin))

5

1st Free Style Player*

Normally shakehand smooth rubber FH/BH (Timo Ball & Zhang JiKe)

6

2nd Free Style Player

Normally penhold smooth rubber FH/BH (like Wang Hao)

*Note: Free style players are similar to freestyle athletes in swimming, where any player can play this role, but we can assume all teams will pick the shakehand, smooth rubber players to play this role, like Ma Long, Zhang JiKe and Timo Boll,

as well as Xu Xin, Wang Hao, and Ma Lin can fit this role in the team event.

The penhold offensive and penhold chopper are easily found in Asian countries, and in European countries all shake hand players will most likely play the first three doubles matches.

In this way more and all style players have chance to participate in and to get Olympic Team medals in  Table Tennis Team event, and will benefit all players for all countries.  At the same time also help to stimulate table tennis vendors providing a variety of equipment, such as more pip-out rubbers and more suitable rackets for using pips rubbers. It will enrich the market and promote the development of table tennis industry.

Proposed World Championships

How can we increase table tennis’s international appeal and popularity? And how can we prompt all style of players for table tennis today?

Increase the award money is one definitely way to complete this goal. Also we can set up more titles for the world championships. The following are suggested match-ups for the newly proposed table tennis structure:

·         Pip-out world championship with single, double, and mix (shakehand or penhold)

·         Chopper world championship with single, double, and mix (shakehand or penhold)

·         Pip-in world championship with single, double, and mix (shakehand or penhold)

·         Super world championship with single, double, and mix (all style players can player like current world championship)

Note: This is similar to swimming with 50, 100, 200, 400, and 1500 meters events, etc.

Out of 6 players on the team - only one has two smooth rubbers on a shakehand blade?

I would think that really clashes with the worldwide statistics... I do not presume to know the precise numbers but I will risk to make a conjecture that currently half of active table tennis players in the world (or more?) are playing with two smooth rubbers on a shakehand blade.

I am not even talking about elite players (smooth/SH percentage there is probably noticeably higher than 50%) - I am talking about all active players including amateur...
