He's probably top 10 for mental toughness. But his lack of top flight power that you mentioned earlier still seems like a problem to me. When Sgouropolous was locked in he was dominating the match for that reason and looked like the much better player.

Sgouropolous looked like the more powerful player for sure.   The better player is up for debate.  TT is not all about power and he couldn't block all of Kanak's shots.  Kanak also frequently won the battle for the first attack but missed an easy ball or placed the ball suboptimally so it wasn't all about Ioannis.

And some idiots on this forum said Kanak' s current ranking is inflated and he does not deserve his ranking spot. These people can probably shut up now.LOL

I saw Kanak getting sloppy starting in Game 2 in went downhill from there.  Hopefully he can recover for tomorrow.

you are really looking for abuse-so I will comply.  Nothing against Jha - I like what he is doing.  Look at his best 8 results and see how he got them - a minority of actual merit.  Then look at the people ranked below him.

Well Done Kanak I wasn't convinced about some of his power but this match plus the one against ML have been exceptional

I get the argument but Kanak had wins both up and down that list. But you are right, the continental results can skew things.

big point at 10-9. Kanak's banana to the Fh doesn't work. 2 games each. Bad placement there.

Smart plays by Kanak as he wins another game from 7-9. He's up 3-2. Extremely close match.
Winner goes to the quarterfinals.

This game 7 is really going to test Kanak after having 2 match points and losing 4 points in a row.

Kanak needs work on his banana flick serve receive. Doesn't put any pressure on his opponent allowing Kallberg to tee off on it.

Nah the guy likes those receives, even when it's good he's just sitting on them.

Dang this time Kanak has 2 match points but Kallberg fights them off then wins in 7. Tough loss. Give Kallberg credit he hung in there.

Yes I felt Kanak did not block as well as usual. Anton's power and BH change of direction caused it though.

Compared to the last match I watched (the one against Ma Long) it looks to me like he is a lot more timid against these lower ranked players.   Hopefully as he improves, he will be more fearless.  Full credit to the other guy though, he hung tough and pulled it out.

It's the nature of table tennis to take more risk when you play a higher ranked opponent.  But even then,  Kallberg isn't really the lower ranked player, he has been playing in a higher league and at a higher level than Kanak for years.  The new ITTF ranking kinda does that.

Ohh ok, on screen he looked really young I wasn't sure what his ranking was.
