Hi,

This is from a N.Y. Times article.

Andreescu’s championship is the culmination of an effort by Tennis Canada over the last several years to find and develop young champions who could compete on the biggest stages. Andreescu, 19, began working with the organization when she was 10 and credits it for her success.

Here is a link to an article on Tennis Canada.

In thinking about this sport's success example and its primary attributes - A small population country (35 million people), a country that has very cold weather for much of the year, an outdoor sport, no impressive history within the sport of tennis - it becomes irresistible to not contemplate what could be done in table tennis in the United States, given equivalent commitment.

The ITTF has announced their initiative to establish training centers around the world to cultivate top level players.  With the U.S. success of the World's Veterans Championships, the Women's World Cup, a country selected to host a World Championships, and the recent major royalty visitation by the Chinese National Team, it is hoped this constitutes momentum that culminates in being selected for one of the training center locations.

The extent of the potential for the sport in the U.S. is of a magnitude that is too large to express with any precision.  Often sport's achievement at the highest level functions as a catalyst for very impressive broad-based participation.  The national-level success stories around the world provide models and motivations for other countries.  We have with Tennis Canada another such example.

Thanks,
