Hi,

The Dusseldorf Masters is a weekly competition just started, slated to extend through the summer.

Richard Prause made mention of this:

How will the field develop in the coming weeks? National coach Jörg RoĂźkopf had indicated that there were requests from other players from abroad?
Prause:
We have a group of 20 to 25 players who regularly train in DĂĽsseldorf. One or the other foreigner will surely also appear here. This time Alberto Mino from Ecuador was there. Next time it may be the American Kanak Jha. There are other requests. The coaching team will probe who could still fit into the tournament format.

Thanks.

Maybe Kanak Jha would be present on this tournament if he knew where he has been located. Watch from 1:30:

Hi,

Why are the umpires standing?

Thanks.

I've been wondering about this and have several theories:

1) They believe that covid-19 floats close to the grounds like small dogs, so better to be higher.

2) They don't sanitize the seats.

3) Their rear ends hurt from injecting isopropyl alcohol there.

4) A better perspective standing up to make sure the player maintain social distancing and don't touch the table.

5) Prepared to run out of the building if someone sneezes.

Most likely real guess: better to see everything.  It seems there is only one official present?

Hi,

If I may:

1) They believe that covid-19 floats close to the grounds like small dogs, so better to be higher.

As droplets are now my life, I find this compelling.  Not to be too scientific, but in Newtonian terms, as droplets are heavier than air, gravity will pull down the droplets to the ground, thus avoiding their entry into your ears, nose, eyes, and mouth.  [The CDC has published statistics indicating taller people get sick less.]  In Einsteinian terms, spacetime is curved in the manner directed by the mass of the virus droplets away from the susceptible entry points.  These umpires are smart!

2) They don't sanitize the seats.

The umpires are not persuaded by the claims of "fast drying" sanitizers, as they shouldn't be, for, it so sanitized, the umpires would have an equivalent requirement for their pants as demonstrated by Dimi in his shirt replacement.  For the umpire to perform this replacement at their station would be indelicate.

3) Their rear ends hurt from injecting isopropyl alcohol there.

Even though it is Germany, national leaders from around the world have international influence.  Your insight here is powerful and persuasive.

4) A better perspective standing up to make sure the player maintain social distancing and don't touch the table.

Though the intention may be noble to, at all costs, prevent virus colonies from thriving on "hard surfaces," the efforts have failed, as I have observed several extremely serious breaches without official umpire retribution by a number of the players, not the least our great boy Kanak who, though his courtside drink may be Clorox, is again revealing that well-recognized American tendency to transgress convention, no matter how threatening the infraction.

5) Prepared to run out of the building if someone sneezes.

Again you have thoughts not found in others.  I await the first video-recorded sneeze to confirm this likely motivation for standing.

Most likely real guess: better to see everything.  It seems there is only one official present?

Easily your weakest observation.  I have no idea what you mean.

Thanks.

Are they umpires? Dressed in street clothes, no jacket, etc. Could just be scorekeepers.

Their standing appears to be deliberate, no chair there.

Isn't it the same umpire? Maybe he prefers to stand.
As a guide, umpires usually sit so as not to block the view of spectators. There are no spectators here so maybe they prefer to stand.
Not applicable here, but note that umpire will stand during doubles matches.

That is a good question.  Considering the times, they may be epidemiologists.

Thanks.

Umpires standing because of Covid-19?  Who knows.  But considering the course of this pandemic in Germany compared to the US, it could be that the measures they take are not to be laughed at.  After all, there are around 11,000 new cases in the US today compared to 304 in Germany.  But what do they know?

Undoubtedly though, some members find the  ~114,000 US Covid-19 deaths hilarious.

In any case, I'm glad to see some new matches.

I like the theory of the umpire's preference described above: the umpire always prefers to stand up but when we have spectators, they have to sit to not obstruct people's view.

Another possibility is that German legendary discipline may have promoted a policy that minimizes the number of objects to sanitize after a match.

They are not official umpires but just keep the score. The tournament is held at Borussia Düsseldorf which is also the home of the German national training center and the people I’ve seen keeping the score are working at the facility.

Wow am surprised Kanak came so close to beating Dang Qiu who's in very good form (he defeated Ovtcharov recently!)....

It seems he improved his power on both wings significantly since the last time I saw him play....

Edit: and beat Mengel! Wow....

A healthy Steger is a class above everyone in the event. Only the familiarity of the national level teammates with his style gives them a chance.
