Watched some of her matches...she was playing so well throughout the entire tournament!

Her inverted FH chop was so spinny that it was close to being downright unloopable lol...

Han Ying have found out, at 37 Y/O that she can counter attack with her FH which brought her lots of points in the whole tournament. Till last year, she was a pure defensive player who only chopped on both sides. I had the chance to play 20 minutes with her and yang Lei in a Düsseldorf training camp in 2017 where all the German players go and she is the player who chopped the most from the FH I have played with sofar. With the spectol, she varies very well the spins. Obviously, she has worked a lot those last months on the offensive size of her game and this paid off against Cheng I Ching who is usually very good when playing Vs a defensive players, the same Vs Jeon Jihee. Against Chen Meng, she had her chances but Ito is too good at flat kill.

Ito is a chopper killer in general, coz she doesn't give the choppers much incoming spin to work with....

Surprised that Chen Meng won so easily against Sun Yingsha, Sun was just so much faster and smoother... apparently Sun Yingsha doesn't really like getting moved around so much haha...

Through watching these Cup matches, my impression is that the player that benefited the most, from a developmental perspective, was Adriana.  The structure of her game has changed much, all for the best; a big tribute to the guidance of her father.

She just turned 20 years of age, with the arc of her future steeply upward.  She stands alone as the top prospect to be, on the Women's side, the Calderano of table tennis in Pan America.

Always it is of value to look at the environments these top players are in.  The exceptional coach-directed, coach-controlled, Chinese system provides to their players an enormous advantage.  On the other end, you find much stagnation among the professional players who are principally on their own in matters of training and development.

Adrianna has a support system of high competency that is surpassing what is typically found for a player such as herself.  To be sure, the judgment had validity to select her dad as the ITTF Developmental Coach of the Year, due to Adrianna's achievements.  At the time, I wasn't confident her next phase of development would be properly directed, as what it takes to play at the highest level of a sport's discipline is quite distinct, in the various forms of maturation, from that of junior success.  All this doubt should be erased.

The hints I saw, pre-Covid, in the structure of her altered play showed a Spring time blossom in this World Cup, with the full, bright, sparkling flower in the years ahead assured.

Thanks.

I believe this was her second win over a top 10 player? (after Miu Hirano at last year's World Cup, also in the round of 16)
Did Lily Zhang join a china prov. team (a little publicity stunt) before? Actually, the coaches found out she was not good enough, so they only let her practiced with them. Or, another player?

"before" - when? Not aware of this at all, maybe a few years ago? This year it seems she was in California preparing and then traveled directly into the "bubble" that was set up for the World Cup. She's also still part of a German Bundesliga team and may play there later this season.
Right before china ban foreign players

I wonder what the status is of that ban.  It was specifically applied to their Super League and was to extend until the Olympics, with the intent of reducing, for foreign players, the exposure to the top Chinese players.

Thanks

Was there any YouTube live?!

Ito can push short really well now and has quality BH down the line attacks... I'm not sure why but she missed like 70% of Sun Yingsha's long fast serves to her backhand... kept overhitting those long :( if she resolved that issue she probably would have won...

From what I understand a limited number of "foreign" players were allowed to play in the Chinese super-league.  Then abruptly in 2017, foreign players were not allowed.  I am guessing Lily might have been able to play for a team but those plans were nixed.  I am not sure.  You can read about the changes in the super-league here:

I vaguely remember that there were several US players who were headed to provincial teams, maybe a couple of years ago? Don't know the details, and whether this included Lily Zhang. In any case, I'm not sure why this would be relevant in this thread - Lily's results speak for themselves.

are you thinking about ariel hsing in the super league? lily at her current level is definitely good enough to make most provincial teams in china or at the very least compete with them.

Miracle after miracle! She was down in both matches yesterday and today.

Yet, this is NOT ENOUGH to get you a spot on the national team!
