It is in group stage now.

Ma Long took the last two single champions and decided not to play singles this year.

There is usually live stream in this youtube channel:

WMY really deserves the women's single champion title.

She is like a mix of Zhang Yining and Wang LiQing.

Agreed.  If you didn't watch the video on Youtube and just saw a 4-0 score line, you might be tempted to think SYS didn't play well.  That's not the case at all.  WMY just has an extra gear beyond both CM and SYS.  If she keeps this up, she just has to play singles in Paris.  It would be a travesty for her not to.

Wang Manyu played some insane TT. Took down both Olympic finalists 4-0 with absolute dominance Shocked

Her style of play somehow is reminiscent of Zhang Jike with the BH dominant play + chiquita, and focusing much more on spin and being slightly further away from the table...

She made the finals in WS, WD and XD. Only her team wasn't good enough.
I like putting heavy topspin on the ball...

WMY WON two points for every match in the group stage. Her teammates couldn’t win the third point. Not much that she could do.  She might have won the MD gold if she hadn’t been injured in the match. Overall I think WMY has a more promising career ahead than SYS.

Definitely looks that way right now.  But things change all the time.  Life is not static.   You could have said the same about ZJK vs ML in 2015 January for example.  Sun Yingsha might elevate her game in response.  But Wang Manyu's level was amazing.  She, ML and FZD showed us amazing things.  I am surprised by how far ahead of everyone else that played that these 3 players were.

As other all ready mentioned,  it seems WMY have one more gear than others now. Does this gear matter outside of CNT?

Anyway, 2 very interseting items,
(1) Liu Dingshuo's style was so "unCNT"
(2) Liang Jungkun used red rubber on his BH, and we seldom saw his powerful killer BH.

Don't really like Liu Dingshuo's style, he plays way too far away from the table and doesn't have good over the table skills. Way too much of an European style for a CNT player.

WMY probably the longest legs and hands among the CNT women players. I think that is a big advantage for her. SYS on the other hand is quite short and small in some way.

We will see how they perform in the coming China super league and WTTC.

Hi,

Two points.

1)  Can we all agree that Liang Jungkun was the second (somewhat distance second) best player in the Men's singles draw?

2)  For sure Wang Manyu is the bomb.  Sun Yingsha had demonstrated a slight superiority to Wang Manyu up to this point, thus giving her the nod in the Olympics.  My view is that they are as equal as any two players can be.  They may be the most equal two table tennis players on earth, if that is possible to contemplate.  The brightness of their brilliance is blinding.  Maybe a competitor to this designation is Ma Long (at his best) and the streaking moonshot Fan.

Thanks.

That for sure is an advantage, but I think her spin, especially on the backhand is some levels higher than everyone else in the CNT women's team, there was one competition where rpms were measured, and she hit 6k rpm quite a few times which is actually almost on par with men's level TT. (Of course it's still some ways off say Xu Xin who is hitting loopkill winners at high 7k rpms, but even Ma Long winners are at high 6k rpms most of the time). Sun Yingsha hits with a lot of power, but I feel she's really disadvantaged on the spin department which imo cost her the Olympics final too. Maybe if she learns how to vary the spin/speed ratio a bit more instead of the all out aggression (max speed) she does now, she'll be a much more balanced and stronger player.
